Beauty is the gift of God. ~Aristotle
Beauty is simply reality seen with the eyes of love ~Rabindranath Tagore
I saw a quote related to beauty just a couple of days ago that kind of stuck with me.
A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely. ~Roald Dahl
It's true, isn't it? Someone who is kind, gracious, and caring can be seen as beautiful even if their features don't measure up to the standards of the so-called beauty industry. And similarly, a person who is selfish, arrogant, and cruel may have attractive features, but that ugliness in their character comes through. Or said, another way -
Beauty may be skin deep, but ugly goes clear to the bone. ~Redd Foxx
I found quite a few quotes that reflected similar thoughts about natural beauty being a result of thoughts and character:
Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul. ~Saint Augustine
What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful. ~Scott Westerfeld
Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart. ~Khalil Gibran
I think happiness is what makes you pretty. Period. Happy people are beautiful. They become like a mirror and they reflect that happiness. ~Drew Barrymore
The beauty industry is booming, and I don't know how many billions of dollars are spent each year on makeup, skin treatments, hair products, plastic surgery, and who knows what else. There's an obsession with trying to reach an elusive standard of flawless skin and gorgeous hair and sculpted body, of having our makeup on point at all times, and our hair perfectly styled. There's nothing wrong with spending time and money on looking our best, and using beauty products to enhance our features and minimize physical flaws. But it's worth remembering that the natural beauty that comes from good character can't be applied with a brush and can't be washed off at the end of the day.
Joy is the best makeup. ~Anne Lamott
Character contributes to beauty. It fortifies a woman as her youth fades. A mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline, fortitude, and integrity can do a great deal to make a woman beautiful. ~Jacqueline Bisset
No matter how plain a woman may be, if truth and honesty are written across her face, she will be beautiful. ~Eleanor Roosevelt
Let your beauty not be external - the braiding of hair and wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes - but the inner person of the heart, the lasting beauty of a gentle and tranquil spirit, which is precious in God's sight.
~I Peter 3:3-4~
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
~Proverbs 31:30~
A thing of beauty is a joy forever: its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness. ~John Keats

I love your take Kym. We both understood different meanings of natural beauty but I think both point of view have their merits. Love your quotes and the post. Sadje
ReplyDeleteThank you - I was thinking of both meanings of the prompt at first, but of course I only had time to explore one! Thanks so much for your comment!
