WQ - Reaching Goals

A great accomplishment shouldn't be the end of the road, just the starting point for the next leap forward. ~Harvey Mackay

Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently. ~William Arthur Ward

The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, learn about them, or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them. ~Denis Waitley

I hope to be able to report in a few weeks from now that my chorus reached the goal we set for ourselves on the international stage. That goal is well-defined, and we've been learning and working on it specifically all year. We know that winning is believable and achievable. We know where we're going, and how we're getting there, and we're all in the adventure together!

Now that we're in the final quarter of the calendar year, it may be a good time to assess how we're doing on reaching the goals we set for ourselves back in January, during New Year's Resolution season. Well, I've been doing that a little bit, and I know some others who have been as well. Personally, I've made pretty solid progress towards some of my goals, and not so much on others. I had goals in two main areas of my life - moving to a new home and everything that goes along with that was the first one, and losing weight and improving my health and fitness was the other. We bought a house in the summer and have been settling in, making some changes, and I feel like I will be able to put a nice big checkmark beside that goal at the end of the year. On the other hand, I'm not quite as happy with my progress in the personal health areas. The pounds aren't coming off, although I am seeing improvements in my strength and stamina.

It is a paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it. ~Arnold J. Toynbee

In the long run men hit only what they aim at. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Currently . . . October 9, 2026

The "Currently" link-up at the beginning of each month is now hosted at Coffee and Cocktails at the Casa. Our hostess Amy posts a set of action verb prompts for the month and writers respond. So, without further ado, here are this month's prompts and what's happening currently . . .

***********

Falling For - Fall colors and decor. I wish I could go all out with fall decor, but I'm satisfied with just a few favorite things. A hat tip to fellow blogger Carla for this quote I saw on her recent Hodgepodge post:

Mornings crisp as carrot sticks, with trees the tone of chimney bricks. ~Daniel Waters

Yes, that captures it! I love the crisp - but not cold - fall mornings, especially when there's some wisps of fog. I also love the mornings when the sky is brilliant blue and the air smells clean. I love the changing colors of the leaves. I took both of these photos within the past week, and already the scene has changed and the colors have popped.

Scaring (Me) - How quickly the time is going by. All the things I thought I had plenty of time to get done, and guess what - I don't have that much time! I've got plans for this weekend and I need to get a lot of stuff done. And next weekend I've got family coming for a visit and there's even more to get done before then. It makes me wonder if I'm focusing my energy on the right things when time really is short, y'know? Bigger picture thoughts.

Working On - Getting Thanksgiving dinner prepped for Sunday afternoon. Getting the house ready for company. I was supposed to get my new furniture delivered yesterday, but long story short, it's not coming until Tuesday now, so I'm working on Plan B. Good thing we didn't already take the old furniture out to the garage or get rid of it entirely!

Working on the Scioto Valley Chorus send-off show, which is preparation for the International competition at the end of the month.

Loving - the fall colors and cooler weather, as I already said. I haven't got much in the way of fall decor, but my late summer crows and sunflowers are still making me smile.

My husband and I were talking just in the last week or so about how we wouldn't have imagined ourselves living in a city again, but we really do like it here. We love our house that is feeling very much like home. We love our church and the friends we're getting closer with. I love the chorus. We love that we are able to share season tickets to an NHL team, and overall we find that we do love the "small city" feel of Columbus. Now, to be fair, I still avoid going downtown as much as possible, and I really miss living out on a quiet country road!

I love having a guest room! The bed is set up and ready for company, and my sister and niece will be our first guests. After the weekend I'll finish tidying up the room because I need some underbed bins to for the extra linens, and there are some boxes still stored in the room that will need to be looked after. I love that my sister is coming to visit! She and her daughter are huge Twenty One Pilots fans, as I and my daughter are; so they are coming to see the show at Ohio State. (My daughter is not able to come, but my son and his family are coming for the weekend and to go to the show.)

Entertaining (Me) - I just looked back at my Hodgepodge post from this week and it was entertaining (and quite embarrassing!) to see all the typos I made in it. Goodness, I didn't think I'd been in that big a hurry, but maybe I was tired or got interrupted a lot so that I didn't notice all the missing words and other wierd things I did. I'm resisting the urge to correct the errors, I'll just leave them and hope others are also entertained and don't judge me too harshly! LOL

But seriously. I've been entertained by the beginning of the hockey season lately, and have tried to make a point of sitting down to watch games on TV with hubby. It's not quite as fun as going to the game, but it does allow me to kick back and relax while watching, and the snacks at home are much, much cheaper than at the game!

I'm really excited to be entertained by Twenty One Pilots next weekend too!

Don't Forget the Hodgepodge!

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  Let's embrace it shall we? What's something you recently forgot to do? Is your memory these days more like a sieve or an elephant?

When I ran to the grocery store to pick up a few things on Sunday night, I forgot to get canned cat food, so the cat is really annoyed with me. My memory is generally pretty good for important things, and for family things. But a last minute item added to my shopping list or something on the to-do list that wasn't written down? That can be more like a sieve unfortunately.

2. Share a trick/strategy you have to help you remember things you need to remember.

All the appointments and birthdays and anything we need to "attend" goes on the calendar. The Google calendar, but also a wall calendar. I also use web-based To-Do list called Remember the Milk. That reminds me which day to pay which bills every month, when it's time to clean the coffeemaker, and helps me remember how long it's been since I called my Mum or followed up on certain phone calls.

If I need to remember something and can't write it down, I condense it to a very short phrase, ideally a set of three things, and repeat it out loud at least three times. It's not foolproof, but it is a helpful trick for remembering an address you were given long enough to get it into your GPS, or the names of two or three people I just met, or a very short to-do list or shopping list. I did not do this on Sunday night, which is why I forgot the cat food.

3. What's your favorite fall vegetable to cook with? Do you prefer your fall veggies roasted, blended into a warm soup, or fresh in a crisp autumn salad?

Sweet potatoes, if they count as a vegetable. I like sweet potatoes almost any way they are fixed and I tend to have them on the menu more often in the fall and winter. I think that I generally prefer my veggies roasted. I like potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, and carrots cut up and roasted together, basted with a little broth to keep them moist. That is on the menu for our Canadian Thanksgiving meal coming up on Sunday.

4.  October 5th is/was National Do Something Nice Day. Did you? If so tell us about it. Or maybe someone did something nice for you, and if that's the case please share.

Well, let's see. I did my best to be nice to everyone I dealt with at work on Monday. That can be a challenge sometimes. haha. I had a couple of very nice phone calls, one with a dear friend and one with my daughter. I think those calls were a nice thing I did, and a nice thing the callers did for me. At chorus rehearsal, one of the ladies had made earrings for everyone and was giving them away and that was super nice.

5.  Nathaniel Hawthorne is credited with the quote "I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house."

Do you tend to spend more time outside this time of year?

Do you actively pause to soak in fleeting moments of beauty in your daily routine? Elaborate.

Do I spend more time outside in the fall? Probably, but I'm not sure. I think I'm far more willing to spend time outside in the fall because the weather is s very pleasant. It's not blazing hot so I get sweaty as soon as I start walking, but it's not so cold that I need to bundle up. It's not humid so it's pleasant to be outside at a bonfire or going for a walk.

I try to allow myself time to stop and just breathe when something beautiful catches my eye or ear. Almost every morning when I step outside, I pause to take in the sunshine, the fog or dew, the changing leaves, the birdsong, or whatever the day's feature seems to be. All the years we lived in Maryland, when I would arrive home after dark on clear nights, I would stand outside in the driveway and just marvel at the moon and stars. It was such a blessing to live in the country where the stars were so visible.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Living room is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Fingers crossed that I don't have to miss TOO much of my day at work to be there to accept delivery. Originally they were going to deliver first thing in the morning which would have worked out nicely, with me getting to work no more than an hour late. Now they've told me it's coming in the middle of the day, so I will need to take my "lunch break" to go home. I'm hoping they can narrow down the expected time so I don't have to sit there and wait for a couple hours.

What are making sure to remember? Leave a comment and let me know!

Share Four Somethings - September 2026

Each month we're each invited to share things in these categories: something we loved, something that sustained us, something we're carrying forward from this month to the next, and something we're making space for. I usually like to include a little bit of a bonus: Some Things I  Read and a little of What's Coming Up Soon.

Some Things I Loved:

We went back to Maryland for a visit on the Labor Day weekend and I loved catching up with family and friends.

These photos were taken at opposite ends of the month, but I love my grands so much, and I did just mention the trip to Maryland  . . .

We went to the Macedonian Festival at the Orthodox church near us and loved seeing the awe-inspiring beauty inside the sanctuary, and we also loved the food!

One place in Ohio we've wanted to visit for years is Cuyahoga Valley National Park, especially Brandywine Falls. We finally made the drive up there on Saturday (which is why I didn't post this on Saturday) and it's beautiful! We loved spending the afternoon hiking and being with our son and his family.

Something That Sustained Me:

It was, at times, a very rainy month, so often it was the hope and promise of better weather, sunny days, and fall colors coming soon. Fitting that this stunning rainbow was waiting for me after one particular downpour.

Something I'm Carrying Forward:

I have chosen the furniture I'm getting for the living room, but as of this writing, I have not actually purchased it, so I'm carrying that forward. Along with an embarrassing number of the projects and organizing I'd meant to have done by now.

Something I'm Making Space For:

Finally got the new mattress ordered and it is arriving tomorrow, so we will quickly be making space to finish getting the guest bedroom fully set up!

*********************
Some Things I Read:

I'm at a really low point for reading these days, spending very little time turning any pages. For lots of reasons. I think it's just the season of life I'm in right now, that I don't have the mindset to focus on reading. As a result my book blog Just A Second has been largely neglected lately.

I finished, but have not yet reviewed Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K White.

I'm currently reading:

Paper Wife by Laila Ibrahim - picked it up again after a long pause.

What's Coming Up Soon?

Thanksgiving (Canadian edition), family coming to visit, the SVC send-off show, Twenty One Pilots concert . . . all coming up in a couple of weeks!

Share something in the comments, or share four somethings with the rest of us in the link party!

This post will be linked at My Joyful Life in the Share Four Somethings link party.

Progress and Goals - August/September

Another two months have gone by since I last shared a progress report on my 2026 goals. I don't even do the greatest possible job of writing a sentence each day to draw from when I do get a moment to do this monthly summary, but it's still good for me to look back and see where I made progress and where I think I could do better.

At the beginning of this year, rather than choose a Word of the Year or make a long list of all kinds of things I wanted to accomplish, I set two main areas of my life to focus on as far as goals: 1) Improve my overall health and fitness; and 2) Move to a home that suits us better than our apartment. The first goal is quite obviously still very much a work in progress, because while I can say my general health and fitness are good and improving, the numbers on my scale really aren't going down in any significant way. So I guess I need to change some eating and exercise habits even more. The second goal could be considered achieved, because we purchased a house and moved in June. But there is still work to be done as far as making the house truly ours and our home. I wasn't in a particular rush to buy new living room furniture to replace what we have, so in a way I've been waiting to find something I really love rather than just settling for something because it's new. I think we'll make a decision and order that furniture this week though. We do need the guest room set up, and that's in progress, as we finally found the mattress we wanted and it's being delivered at the end of the week. We also decided we'd like another sofa bed to be well-prepared for the whole family to visit, and we're actively shopping for that now. If we don't find what we like we are okay for the October family visit, so we can shop around more before Christmas.

That's the progress report part! Now here are some highlights of what I've been up to recently, along with some photos:

August 1 - Happy Anniversary to us! After lunch we picked up our son and his family and went to Huron for the day. We went to the beach for a little bit, then walked around near the lighthouse. We had dinner at Barardi's and then headed back home.

The first week of August was a pretty quiet one, with nothing much out of the ordinary going on. On the weekend, hubby was at a church board workshop so he was busy. I got my hair done on Saturday morning and then putzed around at home. I made blackened tuna steak for dinner and it turned out so good! And we went for a bit of walk at the Blacklick Metro Park.

Sunday, August 9th was a special church service so no worship team, and I was on my own in the afternoon as the board workshop continued. I picked up groceries in the evening met some SVC friends at Blendon Woods to hike.

Second week of August was a rainy one, with thunderstorms and a tornado in the area too. We had to navigate some road closures because of that, and we had some power outages. Thankfully, no lengthy outages for us. The new bedframe was delivered. On Friday I went to an SVC rehearsal retreat straight from work and was there all day Saturday as well. It was a good weekend!

In some ways the third week of August was a bit of a repeat of the second - so much rain! We had the car in the shop on Tuesday, and on Wednesday our Dinner + Discipleship prayer walk was cut short because of the rain. There was a LOT of rain overnight, so much so that there was a great deal of flooding on Thursday morning. It was a huge hassle for everyone getting to work, with road closures and unexpected detours and so many delays. It took me an extra hour to get to work. Thankfully things settled down on Friday!

Saturday, August 22nd began with a fairly lazy morning. We met our son and his family at Prairie Oaks Metro Park for the Bark Bash. No, we don't have a dog, but our granddaughter adores dogs and they had just adopted a new dog, and this was her first outing. Delilah is the new pup in the family, and this was our chance to meet her. She's a sweetheart! After exploring the Bark Bash, we also went to Homestead Metro Park to walk around there for a bit, then went to Three Brothers Diner for dinner.

The final week of August was pretty quiet, not much notable. We invited friends for dinner on Friday night, so that did light a fire under me to get the kitchen and living room tidy and organized. We ordered pizza to make it easy on ourselves, and had a great evening sitting outside at the fire and visiting. (Until afterwards when I realized the mosquitos had been feasting on me! I had at least a dozen bites on each ankle)

On Saturday it was once again time to get my hair done. And in the afternoon we checked out the vintage expo with the kids and went to a burger place for dinner. The food was really good but we paid WAY too much for parking!

September started off with just a regular work week, as Labor Day was late this year. We did go to Maryland for the long weekend, leaving Friday right after work and arriving at the "old homestead" a bit after midnight. On Saturday morning I met friends from breakfast and then picked up Kennady and spent the afternoon shopping with her. We met up with hubby after his lunch with former work friends. We had a late afternoon nap after all of that, and then got Chinese takeout and had dinner at the house with Spencer.

It was really good to go to our old church and visit with some people there. We went out for lunch with the whole family (except our daughter-in-law who was at her sister's) and with some dear friends from back in the day. The youth pastor who had been at that church back when we started attending was a very good friend of ours and we'd tried to stay in touch when he and his family moved to New Brunswick. His wife's family is from the area in Maryland, and her dad is our daughter's boss, so we always had a connection to news even when we didn't see each other often. Anyway, they just moved back to Maryland so it was very fun to catch up with them! That afternoon I went to visit my good friend who hadn't been able to join the group for breakfast on Saturday and caught up with her. In the evening we went with Spencer to meet Kennady and Dan at Carroll Creek in Frederick where we got in a good walk and had ice cream.

always a treat to see our granddaughter!

We did sleep in a little bit on Labour Day, then took Spencer out for brunch at Cracker Barrel. Then we packed up our stuff and headed back home.

September 8th it was back to work! And it was another stormy week too, with thunderstorms that knocked out power for several hours one night. One day I left work early because of a bad headache and was just lazy all evening.

September 11th, hard to believe it has been twenty-five years since that awful day. In the evening, we went to the Macedonian Festival at the Orthodox church in our neighborhood and had a delicious dinner. Loved seeing the church. Our friends came over later in the evening for a fireside chat and to share some of the Macedonian desserts I'd brought home. (And I remembered to use bug spray before sitting at the fire this time!)

On Saturday, September 12th I had another all day rehearsal with SVC, and in the evening we attended a watch party for the OSU vs Texas game. The game started out great for OSU and most of us went home at halftime, but Texas came back to win, much to our disappointment.

On Sunday afternoon, Harrison and family came over to watch football and we grilled brats, hot dogs, and corn on the cob.

The week of September 13th didn't get off to a great start, as I had been up sick part of the night and felt awful. I went to work late and came home early, and even skipped out of SVC rehearsal. Fortunately I could participate via zoom. It did make me mad to miss though, because hubby and I could have shared a ride that week since he had board meeting and SVC now rehearses at our church. Thankfully, I felt better by Tuesday morning and rest of the week was pretty standard.

Saturday, September 19th I went with girlfriends to the Backwoods Fest which was a lot of fun! On Sunday we went out to lunch with friends.

During the week of September 21, we finally got our 2013 RAV4 into the shop to get a "new" engine put in! That was a long while coming, and hopefully we'll have it running soon enough to use it while family is here in October.

This was the reason I was little late for work one day - the ducks have taken over the street!

On Thursday evening, we went to a fundraiser dinner for Lower Lights in the evening. The Boathouse was the beautiful setting. The meal and the company was excellent, and the cause a worthy one.

On Saturday, September 26th, we finally made it up to Cuyahoga Valley National Park! This is something we've been wanting to do for almost as long as we've lived in Ohio. We met our son and his family for breakfast, then drove up to Cuyahoga Valley. We explored around the Boston Mill Visitor Center for a bit, then hiked the trail out to Brandywine Falls . . . the five mile round trip hike! There were some challenging places with lots of steps and climbing, but I'd say it was worth it. The Falls are beautiful and I imagine are even more so when the autumn leaves are at peak. Though I understand it's very crowded then too! After our hike, and after our granddaughter collected her first Junior Ranger badge, we went into the town of Cuyahoga Falls and had an early dinner at a really neat burger joint. We also made a quick stop at an antique and collectible shop called The Bomb Shelter in Akron.

an easy part of the trail!

There are a couple days left in September, but as of now I expect they will be fairly standard work days.

How has the last month or so shaped up for you? Leave a comment and let me know!
