Wednesday Hodgepodge - All About Fall

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  It's officially fall y'all . . . in the northern hemisphere anyway. What are three of your favorite things about this particular season of the year?

I love fall weather, when the days are still warm and sunny but not blazing hot, and when the nights are cooler. Bonus points for some morning fog!

Fall colors! The best is when there's lots of reds and yellows, but some green leaves left, and against that brilliant blue sky - gorgeous! Is it just me or does the sky seem bluer in late September and early October?

Fall flavors like cinnamon and spice, apple and pumpkin. Now I'm not a pumpkin spice latte fan, but the other pumpkin things - pie, cake, cookies - yes, please! Apple cider and apple butter. Lots of cinnamon and ginger and clove flavors and scents. Maybe it's the scents at least as much as the flavors, now that I think about it, because we start getting serious about having candles in the fall.

2. Your favorite fall fabric - denim, flannel, tweed, corduroy, tartan, polar fleece, leather? Do you own something made with your favorite fall fabric?

I'd have to say flannel is my favorite, with denim a close second. I have a flannel shacket that I love, and lots of denim jeans.

3. According to Everyday Health here are ten healthy fall food - apples (flavonoids may improve brain health), pears (for heart friendly fiber), cranberries (helps your body fight oxidative stress), winter squash (for eye health), pumpkin (another great source of Vitamin A), leeks (an anti-inflammatory food), brussel sprouts (full of fiber and anti-oxidants), sweet potatoes (loaded with Vit A and C), parsnips (keep your bones healthy with Vit K), and broccoli (may help prevent cancer).

How many on the list do you eat on a regular basis? Which one is your favorite? Which one gets a big no thanks from you?

I eat cranberries and apples in some form pretty regularly, I suppose. Sweet potatoes were on the menu very regularly up until I started working full time and now I don't have time to bake them on weeknights any more, but I love them. I like pumpkin and parsnips (maybe not together!), and am fine with pears and winter squash. I'm not sure I've ever had leeks but they don't seem that appetizing to me. I'll eat broccoli only if I have to in order to be polite, but I really don't like it. Brussel sprouts are hard no.

4. Tell us about the last time (or a recent time) you experienced a wave of nostalgia.

Maybe it's a sign that I'm getting old that I experience nostalgia regularly?! We were talking with friends at church recently about playing music, and sharing some memories about playing on worship team with our kids, and after that conversation I kept thinking back on some of those experiences. I guess that was a recent nostalgia moment for me. It's almost a year ago that we were in Alberta for a visit with my family, and my mom and dad are coming here for a visit in a few weeks, so I've been reflecting a little on this time last year which is also nostalgic.

5.  Sept. 22nd was National Daughter's Day. Like mother, like daughter . . . does this idiom ring true for you? You may answer in terms of your own role as a daughter, or, if you have daughters, then your role as a mother of daughters.

I don't know how much I'm like my mom in terms of personality, but I've noticed that I'm looking more like her as I'm getting older! With my daughter, I don't think she looks a great deal like me, but we share a lot of interests and have a close relationship. In many ways, my grandmother and my mother have set wonderful examples to follow so I've learned from them and want to be like my mother. I hope my daughter, and my daughters-in-law, see good things in my life that they learn from and want to emulate.

Mother's Day 2019

My daughter and I love music and started taking a selfie at the live performances we went to together, whether our chorus performances, her recitals, or rock concerts.

I feel like this shows me with crazy eyes, but this
was at our first Twenty One Pilots concert.

I've got to run and will be back to comment later, so in the interest of time, I will just put in a quick plug for the Wednesday Quotes link-up that will start up again next week, and that I'll be co-hosting. Find out more here: Wednesday Quotes Returns!

  2. As a teen in the 90s, I left flannel behind but I am thinking it's time one makes a come back. I might get myself to Goodwill and try to find one.

  5. I love the mix of green and color this time of year too. We get a lot of that as we have a lot of pine in our area so the green is always there. I make a potato leek soup that is yummy and a good way to try leeks if you like potato soup. Enjoy your day!

    1. Oh yes, that mix of evergreen trees among those with changing leaves is beautiful. When we were in Alberta last year the very bright yellow larch trees made a stunning contrast to the dark green pines and firs, with some other shades of yellows and orange mixed in too. Loved it! I like to think I'd be brave enough to try leeks but I'm not sure. LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
