Wednesday Hodgepodge - Milk and Cookies

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What's one task you'd like a little Christmas elf to sneak in and take care of tonight?

It's not directly related to the holidays, but it would be ever so helpful if an elf could use some Christmas magic to clean up my spare room. I've let it get quite untidy again, and there's a lot of boxes from the Christmas ornaments sitting out right now too.

2. What's your biggest challenge during the holidays?

Limiting my intake of sweets! I want to try all of them and all the cookies and treats are so good, but not always good for my tummy.

 3. Are you a cookie baker this time of year? If your year had to be summed up in the shape of a cookie cutter what shape would it be?

I'm not as much of a cookie baker as I used to be, but still do it more during the holidays than other times of the year. We must have shortbreads and peppernuts, and I usually wind up making a few batches of cookies. Summing up my year in a cookie cutter shape is a challenge. Hmm. Maybe the Santa's sleigh shape. Like a sleigh, the time has just kept gliding along . . . sometimes it flies by and is full of fun like Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve, but sometimes it's tough going when it hits some gravel or other rough terrain and it's been emptied out so it fishtails a bit.

4. Santa likes milk with his cookies. Do you like milk? What kind of milk is on tap in your house (whole, 2%, skim, almond, oat, etc)? What's the last thing you made that called for milk?

Oh gosh, I love milk, but it does not love me that much any more. I used to drink lots and lots of milk, but as I've gotten older I find that I have to limit my dairy or my tummy protests. We have 2% and almond milk at our house. (Usually chocolate almond milk) The last thing I made that called for milk was likely the bowl of cereal I had for dinner on Monday.

5.  Share one favorite line from a Christmas carol or holiday tune.

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is Peace.
 ~O Holy Night~

6. Insert your own random thought here.

On my first read-through, I thought Question 5 was a favorite line from a Christmas movie. Since I was kind of prepared to answer that, I'll put it here! One of the movies we watch every holiday without fail is an all-time favorite of mine, It's A Wonderful Life. There's a lot of lines from that one, and from some of my other favorite Christmas movies, to choose from, but I really like Clarence's reminder in his final gift to George:

Dear George, remember no man is a failure who has friends. Thanks for the wings,

Love Clarence

Here are some thoughts on the movie and why I love it so much, written for my homeschool blog a few years ago: It's A Wonderful Story

  1. We haven't watched It's A Wonderful Life yet this year so will hopefully add that over the weekend. I haven't done any baking yet, but have a somewhat free day today so hope to get started. I'm not doing as much this year in terms of baking (although I'm eating plenty of sweets!!). Have a great day!

    1. It's A Wonderful Life is usually our Christmas Eve or Christmas Day movie, although I'm happy to watch it several times over the holiday season. We haven't watched it yet this year. Nor have I done much baking yet. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. These days the milk I'm drinking comes only in the form of hot cocoa with lots of whipped cream on top! Thanks for sharing all these fun tidbits of your December season, Kym.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  3. I loved this prompt, Kym! And, I love your answers except it's my bedroom that's a mess! I've just thrown all the boxes that have Christmas presents in there! I really need to sort it out and see what I still need to buy. I haven't even begun to bake. We've just been so busy with Mike's physical therapy and other appointments. I need to get busy or the time will be past. I don't exactly love milk, but when there are times I do crave it. We drink lactose free milk which has a lot more protein which is something I've really been focusing on. Have a wonderful holiday season, Kym!

    1. I think we all have a temporary collection place for the boxes and wrappings during the holidays and it's so hard to keep it tidy and organized! All those therapy appointments keeping you busy get in the way of organization too, I 'm sure. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting - hope you have very happy holiday season!

  4. My kitchen table is a mess with Christmas wrapping paper and presents. I love It's a Wonderful Life! I drink lactose free mild too and have 2 cups a day along with cheese or cottage cheese to get enough vitamin D. I understand busy and have been doing to physical therapy too. I will bake next week with the grands. It always comes together for Christmas!

    1. I only have a dining room table so it gets repurposed multiple times during the week. I get it all laid out beautifully with my Christmasy decor and then have to move it all aside for a meal or to wrap gifts, and don't get it put back in order right away. Thanks for stopping by to comment, and I hope you have a very happy holiday!

  5. It's funny that I don't know as I have ever had homemade shortbread cookies. I associate shortbread with the cookies you find in tins, especially around the holidays. I can imagine how good homemade ones are! Your cookie cutter sleigh analogy was a good one! Have a great day!

    1. Homemade shortbreads are the best, I think, and it's amazing to me how many different variations of such a simple cookie there are. All delicious! Thanks for stopping by my wild sleigh ride, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

  6. I definitely have a tendency to eat too many cookies and sweets this time of year but I am not a milk drinker at all. I have never liked milk but I do like cheese, yogurt, and ice cream.
