WQ - Sweet Dreams

A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you're fast asleep. ~Walt Disney

We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep. ~William Shakespeare

Gaze up at the stars knowing that I see the same sky and wish the same sweet dreams. ~Elizabeth Barrett Browning

What I want to do is travel deep and deeper into the Dreamlands, to find that place that I know is waiting for me here. My home. ~Charles de Lint

Sleep, baby, sleep. Thy father's watching the sheep. Thy mother's shaking the Dreamland tree, and down drops a little dream for thee. ~Elizabeth Prentiss

They've promised that dreams can come true - but forgot to mention that nightmares are dreams, too. ~Oscar Wilde

I had had dreams and I have had nightmares, but I have conquered my nightmares because of my dreams. ~Jonas Salk

Life hands us opportunities at every turn to get over ourselves, to get outside ourselves, to wake up from our own bad dreams and realize that really lovely things are happening all the time. ~Shauna Niequist

And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
Even on My menservants and maidservants,
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

WQ - Reaching Goals

A great accomplishment shouldn't be the end of the road, just the starting point for the next leap forward. ~Harvey Mackay

Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently. ~William Arthur Ward

The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, learn about them, or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them. ~Denis Waitley

I hope to be able to report in a few weeks from now that my chorus reached the goal we set for ourselves on the international stage. That goal is well-defined, and we've been learning and working on it specifically all year. We know that winning is believable and achievable. We know where we're going, and how we're getting there, and we're all in the adventure together!

Now that we're in the final quarter of the calendar year, it may be a good time to assess how we're doing on reaching the goals we set for ourselves back in January, during New Year's Resolution season. Well, I've been doing that a little bit, and I know some others who have been as well. Personally, I've made pretty solid progress towards some of my goals, and not so much on others. I had goals in two main areas of my life - moving to a new home and everything that goes along with that was the first one, and losing weight and improving my health and fitness was the other. We bought a house in the summer and have been settling in, making some changes, and I feel like I will be able to put a nice big checkmark beside that goal at the end of the year. On the other hand, I'm not quite as happy with my progress in the personal health areas. The pounds aren't coming off, although I am seeing improvements in my strength and stamina.

It is a paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it. ~Arnold J. Toynbee

In the long run men hit only what they aim at. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

WQ - Elegance

elegance✲ -
a : refined grace or dignifed propriety
b : tasteful richness of design or ornamentation
c : dignified gracefulness or restrained beauty of style
d : scientific precision, neatness, and simplicity

We have the definition, but that doesn't mean it's easy to put our finger on just what it is that sets a  person apart as being elegant.

Elegance is a statement, an attitude. Elegant women are women of character with confidence. ~Elie Saab

Elegance is timeless. It withstands trend; It withstands the commercialization of what fashion and style have become. ~Zac Posen

I think I like Coco Chanel's definition best.

The zenith of elegance in any woman's wardrobe is the little black dress, the power of which suggests dash and refinement. ~Andre Leon Talley

✲definition from Merriam-Webster

WQ - Best Friends

To discover a kindred spirit is to find your heart in the heart of a friend. ~Ann Parrish

With some, we're certain our hearts must have been acquainted, long before we ever met them. ~Shakieb Orgunwall

A bosom friend - an intimate friend, you know - a really kindred spirit to whom I can confide my inmost soul. ~Lucy Maud Montgomery

A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend, one human soul whom we can trust utterly, who knows the best and worst of us, and who loves us in spite of all our faults. ~Charles Kingsley

It's truly a blessing when your spouse is also your best friend. And when family members are good friends.

True friends are always together in spirit. ~Lucy Maud Montgomery

There is no possession more valuable than a good and faithful friend. ~Socrates

Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up. Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm? And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.
~Ecclesiastes 4:9-12~

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.
~Proverbs 27:9~

A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked. ~Bernard Meltzer

WQ - Worthwhile Mistakes

It's always helpful to learn from your mistakes because then your mistakes seem worthwhile. ~Garry Marshall

All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes. ~Winston Churchill

It really is easy to gain wisdom. Since we all make mistakes, if we learn something valuable from that experience, we have gained wisdom!

One of the great things about being willing to try new things and make mistakes is that making mistakes keeps you humble. People who are humble learn more than people who are arrogant. ~Robert Kiyosaki

The inventor Thomas Edison famously viewed attempts that didn't work as learning experiences. His persistence and willingness to learn from each less-than-perfect experiment led eventually to success!

I never view mistakes as failures. They are simply opportunities to find out what doesn't work. ~Thomas A. Edison

At the beginning of a new school year, the papers and the tests haven't been written yet, and there are so many possibilities. Of course, every student should want to do their best and earn high grades, but it's inevitable that there will be mistakes on those assignments from time to time. Do your best, and be willing to learn from what went wrong.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something. ~Neil Gaiman

Sometimes we learn on our own when we got something wrong. Sometimes we need help understanding what the mistake was and how we can do better. And often, the learning begins when we accept correction from someone with more experience who guides us.

If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself;
but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.
~Proverbs 15:32~

I never make stupid mistakes. Only very, very clever ones. ~John Peel

WQ - The Value of Rest

When in haste, rest in the present. Take a deep breath and come back to here and now. ~Dan Millman

I think I am probably better at taking breaks than I am at working hard. But I do know that taking time to relax and enjoy the satisfaction of completing tasks or having worked hard is a much sweeter rest than laziness or procrastination would ever produce.

I do admire people who have drive and ambition and get things done. It is indeed a virtue to work hard and to persevere, but it isn't healthy to work all the time and not take sufficient time to rest and refresh. As with most things in life, we need to find balance.

And sometimes, when we are overwhelmed or exhausted or stuck, we benefit from taking a break to get some perspective and come back later. I found it interesting that Leonardo da Vinci understood this long ago - it is not a new idea!

Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen. ~Leonardo da Vinci

Rest when you're weary. Refresh and renew yourself, your body, your mind, your spirit. Then get back to work. ~Ralph Marston

My child, don't lose sight of common sense and discernment.
Hang on to them,
for they will refresh your soul.
They are like jewels on a necklace.
They keep you safe on your way,
and your feet will not stumble.
You can go to bed without fear;
you will lie down and sleep soundly.
~Proverbs 3:21-24~

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
~Psalm 91:1~

The end of labor is to gain leisure. ~Aristotle
