Wednesday Hodgepodge - Keeping It Light

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What's a task you do on a regular (or semi-regular) basis that feels like it should be an Olympic event?

I don't know. Menu planning and making meals feels like a never-ending marathon to me so maybe a weekly or even monthly medal ceremony would help me feel like I've accomplished something before I start the next round.

2. What's in the trunk of your car right now?

Well, I drive a hatchback so there's not an enclosed trunk. Going by memory . . . there's a stash of reusable grocery totes, a collapsible bin tote, a car blanket, and I'm pretty sure the snow brush is back there.

3. Summer foods vs. fall foods . . . which do you prefer?

Would you rather - watermelon or caramel apple? Iced coffee of pumpkin spiced latte? Potato salad or sweet potato casserole? Barbecued ribs or roast turkey? Ice cream sandwich or apple pie? Corn on the cob or candy corn?

Watermelon . . . Pumpkin spiced latte . . . Sweet potato casserole . . . barbecued ribs . . . Ice cream sandwich . . . Corn on the cob.

Looks like summer foods for the win!

4. August 7th is National Lighthouse Day. Have you visited any lighthouses? Do you have a favorite? Is a lighthouse something you seek out if you're visiting an area known for theirs?

We've visited a few lighthouses. I can think of five or six we've been to while on vacations, but we've only been inside three of those. Ponce Inlet in Florida, Marblehead in Ohio, and Drum Point in Maryland. Ponce Inlet is my favorite of the ones I've seen, because we really enjoyed the museum. We definitely looked for opportunities to visit lighthouses while on vacation, and that was something our kids initiated.

5.  Light at the end of the tunnel, out like a light, give the green light, a lightbulb moment, in a new light, in the limelight . . . of the 'light' idioms listed which applies in some way to your life lately? Explain.

This week specifically, I think it would be 'out like a light'. I had a very slight sore throat several days ago - as in it only hurt when I swallowed - and then Sunday and yesterday I pretty much lost my voice even though I felt fine. And today (I'm writing this Tuesday evening) I definitely felt under the weather. So I've been sleeping every chance I get, and I'm out like a light as soon as I lie down!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Here's some more about the lighthouses I can remember visiting (and photographing).

Drum Point in Solomon's Island is kind of special to me because my husband and I visited on a long weekend about two months after my knee replacement, and I was able to climb the narrow ladder and stairways to get up inside of it! Took a mirror selfie in the living quarters to prove it!

We visited Marblehead while on the Summer of Harrison vacation in 2010.

I love the spiral iron staircases, but I'd get awfully tired of going up and down if I was the keeper!

We visited Ponce Inlet in 2008 and I don't have many photos of the outside of the lighthouse, but I like this one of my two youngest kids in the staircase.

  1. Hope you feel better. I have had a ton of mucus in my throat this week and while I don't feel sick, it's getting irritating.

  2. I think we have all the same things in our trunk! (though I just added a box of books and puzzles to drop off at the library's yard sale). We've visited lots of lighthouses but I honestly can't think of a single one that has been open for us to go up in it!

    1. It doesn't seem like very many lighthouses are open, except a few very touristy ones. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I almost said Thomas Point in Maryland because you can boat up to it. We lived in MD for several years (Annapolis) so I've seen the Solomon's Island lighthouse too. So many lighthouses when you stop and count. I have never been to any of the Great Lakes and that is something I'd like to see. Have a great day!

    1. Really surprising how many lighthouses there are, isn't it? I never really thought about how many would have been needed on the Great Lakes until I started visiting the area. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. Enjoyed reading your answers! And like you, I really like lighthouses. Don´t the stairs make great pictures? I cannot imagine the hard work of being a lighthouse keeper back in the day... the stairs...carrying oil up to the top... being so isolated. I think I answered that my favorite lighthouse was one on Presque Isle. My sister and I stumbled upon it and loved learning more about the Great Lakes and the lighthouses on the lakes.

    1. The dedication of the lighthouse keepers is really inspiring, I think! There's part of me that is so fascinated by it, but it would be a hard life, probably not as romantic as the novels make it seem. ;-) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I hope you are feeling better.

  7. You have visited many picturesque lighthouses. Great photos. I was surprised to learn that there is a lighthouse in Ohio, showcasing my lack of knowledge about the state. The one that caught my eye was the smaller one topped with green - it was adorable. Lighthouses are truly fascinating structures. Your post this week was very enjoyable!

    1. I was also originally surprised to learn how many lighthouses are dotted all around the Great Lakes, but it makes sense they would have been very necessary! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  9. Oh, I agree with you about meal planning...I wouldn't medal in that, though! I have seriously thought about signing up for Hello Fresh at times. It would be nice to have the meal planning all done. And, it wasn't that much more expensive than all the eating out we do! I don't think I've ever been to a lighthouse. I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to make it to the top. I'm not afraid of heights, but there's something about the going round and round that amplifies my anxiety.

    1. Those lighthouse staircases are so narrow and I can see how the spiral could send anxiety spiralling too! I know I wouldn't medal in meal planning although I was kind of hoping that some competition and a reward might help motivate me. I don't know if that would work or not!.
