Five Minute Friday - Scene

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

set the scene
change of scene
arrive on the scene
behind the scenes

********************
The curtain opens and we see the stage, and the play begins. The scenery isn't really part of the action but it helps us imagine the setting for the story and get a feel for the background, time, and place. The first scene of any play or movie usually sets our expectations for the rest of the story. Is the mood dark or hopeful? Are we anticipating a romance or a tragedy?

The scenes we find ourselves in as we go through life can set our expectations for what is likely to come next, and it may feel like our surroundings are affecting the outcomes. Often life feels so humdrum and monotonous because the scenery doesn't change much from day to day, and we may feel like we're going through the motions. Our story may feel uninteresting or unimportant. We may even wonder whether there's any point to the story, or if we'll just keep doing the same insignificant actions over and over. The scenes may set us up to expect sad and disappointing story outcomes, and the bright spots seem too few. I know I've felt that way about my story more than a time or two.

I'm sure that many characters in the pages of the Bible must have felt that way. Years and years of childlessness would have weighed heavily on Abraham and Sarah. The Hebrews enslaved in Egypt saw no end to their drudgery. The downward spiral of the nation of Israel into idolatry and then exile seemed like the tragedies would never let up. But God was still directing the play, still guiding the story, and still working behind the scenes to bring about the promised 'happy ending' in unexpected ways.

From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live. He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
~Acts 17:26-27~

The play isn't over, and God isn't limited by the scene you find yourself in right now. He has a purpose for your story, and a bright future for all who trust him.

"For I know the plans I have for you" ― this is the LORD's declaration ― "plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. You will call to me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart."
~Jeremiah 29:11-13~

Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene. ~A.C. Benson

  3. Isn't that a blessing to know that God is limited by the scene I currently see? Many days the scene does look humdrum to me...but I try to remind myself that this life of mine is His story! I really enjoyed your post this morning! Blessings to you -
