Comfort, comfort my people,
says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her
that her hard service has been completed,
that her sin has been paid for,
that she has received from the LORD's hand
double for all her sins.
A voice of one calling:
"In the wilderness prepare
the way for the LORD;
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

because he has visited and made a ransom to liberate his people
by raising up for us a mighty Deliverer

This has happened so that he might show

that he would remember his holy covenant,
the oath he swore before Avraham

would serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness
before him all our days.
You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
you will go before the Lord to prepare his way
by spreading the knowledge among his people
that deliverance comes by having sins forgiven
through our God's most tender mercy,
which causes the Sunrise to visit us from Heaven,
to shine on those in darkness, living in the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the paths of peace."
