I'm participating in the Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write. The prompt was "admiration" and I puzzled over what to share about it. For the most part, I'll let the quotes do the talking! It's faster that way and I'm already late!
Blessed is he who has learned to admire but not envy, to follow but not imitate, to praise but not flatter, and to lead but not manipulate. ~William Arthur Ward
Instead of worrying about what people say of you, why not spend time trying to accomplish something they will admire. ~Dale Carnegie
And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.
~Matthew 6:16~
We tend to become like those whom we admire. ~Thomas S. Monson
And that's a compelling reason to consider who we admire and emulate.While it might be nice to have the features and body and clothing of the celebrity we think is so attractive, I'm not sure we'd really want to be like them in terms of personality or to live in their world, no matter how luxurious it seems. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I'm finding myself focusing more on what I want to be known for in terms of personality traits. Which isn't to say that I never concern myself with how I look! It's more that I've accepted that these are my features and this is how old I am and I'm never going to pass for twenty-something again so why pretend otherwise? I am more concerned with whether I'll be known as a good person that's pleasant to be around.
So rather than be dazzled by the glitz and glamour of the world's celebrities, I think it's wiser to consider their actions and whether they treat people around them well. And since that's so hard to assess from a distance, I'll choose to save most of my admiration for the people I actually know and have proven themselves to be worthy of that admiration. People who are genuinely good. Folks who are kind, respectful, and do the right thing. If I'm going to follow a person, I should choose a person who is doing their best to follow God.
And the one I admire most should always be God himself, the Famous One.
LORD, I have heard of your fame;
I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD.
Repeat them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.
~Habakkuk 3:2~
Your name, O LORD, endures forever;
your fame, O LORD, is known to every generation.
For the LORD will give justice to his people
and have compassion on his servants.
~Psalm 135:13-14~

I used one of your quotes for this week's topic of endurance. I love the Ann Landers quote. She was amazingly funny. What skill. I admire her, too. Great thoughts and music, Kym. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I so appreciated the common sense and wit of Ann Landers (and Dear Abby too!) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
