A little background on the Coffee Break Reading List. On my original blog, Homeschool Coffee Break, I started doing an occasional round-up of some of the stuff around the internet that I'd found interesting and worth passing along. Since it was a blog mostly about homeschooling, I tried to make sure I was including articles of particular interest to home educators, but when I was no longer homeschooling my own kids, it got a little harder to keep ahead of homeschool topics, and eventually the Coffee Break Reading List was retired. I've brought it back in this space, but not with the homeschooling focus. Just some interesting and fun things that I hope others will find interesting and fun as well.

Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
You may know that I'm a little bit of a grammar nerd, and if you do, you may not be surprised that I found an article about the octothorpe on The Guardian fascinating. What's an octothorpe, you ask? You probably know it by the name 'pound sign' or 'hashtag' as it's been rebranded thanks mostly to Twitter. Read about its history here: How the # became the sign of our times.
If I was to assign a hashtag to this article from Home With Grace and Joy, I'd probably go with #BeautifulBroken. In Lessons from the Beach - Broken But Beautiful, she describes the powerful lesson learned from a shell collection of less than perfect specimens. Even the broken bits are beautiful, if we are willing to see past the chipped edges and lack of perfection.
When we compare ourselves to seashells, we might be able to see all the damage and wounds on the seashell, but for humans, many of those wounds are Unseen Hurts, as Barbara explains on Stray Thoughts. Let's be gentle and understanding with each other whenever we can!
The murals of one artist took my breath away when I perused them on Colossal. Mantra's Immense Butterfly Murals Flutter Across Buildings and Walls - check them out! Aren't those examples gorgeous?
I feel like I can get away with adding a few photos of butterflies and butterfly-related art here now! The Butterfly Website has helpful information if you'd like to identify specific butterflies you spot in your area!

Quotable (I've enjoyed hunting up little quotes to add to my Five Minute Friday posts, and I do a weekly Wednesday Quotes post based on interesting quotes, but I've still got such a collection that I have to keep sharing them!):
Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilerating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. ~John Ruskin
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. ~Pablo Picasso
My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece. ~Claude Monet
Life is a beautiful magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish. ~Charles Chaplin

Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:
This first one was a sentence in German Duolingo lesson this week. Not sure what conversation this would be appropriate in, but it's memorable!

Something I watched during coffee break:
Almost no TV or movies for me over the past little while. My husband was watching another season of Alone lately, and I did take some interest in that, because the contestants were in the wilderness of Labrador, and it was cold! I sat down to watch most of the last episode when they were down to the last three contestants. Two of them made their own decision to tap out. One because he felt he had proven what he'd wanted to and discovered a lot about himself and what he wanted to accomplish with his life. He decided that his mother would want to see him walk out on his own, having made his own decision that it was enough, rather than be carried out or be pulled because of failing health. We were thinking he might wind up the winner so that was a little disappointing for us as viewers, but good for him! Then a lady made her decision to tap out because her strength was failing and she knew she would find it increasingly difficult to hunt for food. She, too, decided enough was enough and tapped out while she was able to make her own decision, so good for her! But I was pulling hard for her, honestly. The guy that remained and thus was declared the winner was my least favorite and while I know he did some good creative hunting and fishing and survival skill stuff earlier, in the episode I watched his strategy was simply to fast until he (hopefully) won. That didn't seem like it should be rewarded with a win, but whatever. Good for him and his girlfriend.
Other than that, once again, a lot of YouTube rabbit holes made up the bulk of what I watched.

We often find that Duolingo has some of the weirdest sentences! LOL. Such beautiful butterflies. I have such a hard time watching those survival shows.. I know I would NEVER make it even just one full day on my own in the wilderness.
ReplyDeleteI'd never last on one of those survival shows either. My biggest issue would be finding food for myself. Interesting to watch, but I'd never choose to participate! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
