I'm diving in early so I'll have something to contribute to this week's Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write. This time around, the theme is World Ocean Day and Water.
Many of my friends are beach people. Their happy place is the beach and that is their favorite place to go to unwind and to recharge. I'm not sure if it's because I grew up in a prairie province with the Rocky Mountains much closer than any beaches, but the pull towards the ocean is not nearly so strong in me. I do love visiting the coasts and walking on boardwalks and beaches, listening to the waves, but I'm pretty sure my enjoyment is not quite the same level as my friends. This is even after living right across the street from the Atlantic Ocean, right at the end of the boardwalk! An experience I wouldn't trade for anything―it was so wonderful to stroll onto the boardwak or beach just yards from my door!
Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked. ~Warren Buffet
Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be if that didn't happen. ~Steven Wright
But seriously. Even though I don't live for my next beach vacation like some others do, there is just nothing like looking across the vastness of the ocean and thinking that the portion I can see is only the tiniest fraction of how big it really is. The sound of the surf is one of the most beautiful I know, and the beauty of sunrise or sunset over the ocean is unmatched.
The sea is everything. It covers seven-tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. ~Jules Verne
If you want to know why the coast is such an inspirational place, ask Herman Melville, Jack London, Nordhoff and Hall, Robert Louis Stevenson or Joseph Conrad. It's a glimpse of eternity. It invites rumination, the relentless whisper of the tide against the shore. ~John Cooper Clarke
The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul. ~Robert Wylan
Our vacations that have included trips to the ocean have given me incredible memories. When I was growing up, we took a few family vacations to the west coast, so I've seen the Pacific Ocean from British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. When I was in high school, I went on a school trip to Nova Scotia and got my first look at the Atlantic Ocean. My husband and I visited the Bahamas where I experienced the Caribbean Sea. We lived in Ocean City, New Jersey for the first winter we were in the United States―that's where we lived across the street from the beach―and during the couple of years we were in New Jersey we saw the ocean a lot! Over the years we lived in Maryland, we had plenty of opportunities to visit the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay beaches, and we took family vacations that allowed us to see the ocean from Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Maine, Delaware, Florida, and Louisiana. So many beautiful and varied views of the ocean!
One of the most dramatic places to see this truth is at the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. We visited there several years ago and it's a fascinating place. To basically walk on the ocean floor, and then come back hours later to see it completely under water.
Low Tide |
Looking down at the same area, nearly high tide. |
That's a dramatic difference of the tides, but the cool thing to me is the predictable rhythm of the tide coming in and going out, and the waves continually rolling into the shoreline. Whether gentle or crashing, it is a rhythm that can be comforting because it is constant.
Because there's nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it's sent away. ~Sarah Kay
The ocean is a mighty, vast, and dangerous place, but it always makes me feel small and humble. ~Alexandra Cousteau
You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas, . . .
who stilled the roaring of the seas,
the roaring of their waves,
and the turmoil of the nations.
The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
where morning dawns, where evening fades,
You call forth songs of joy.
~Psalm 65:5-8~

I miss the beach vacations I spent as a kid. Those places are all long gone and replaced with so many more homes in smaller lots. I'd just like to spend a week in a home with a long wooden walkway to the beach where no one bothers me (except my husband). That sounds like the perfect beach vacation to me. Thanks for sharing your memories.
