Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thoughts on Spring Celebration

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What would you say is the most difficult task when it comes to spring cleaning? Have you completed that task this year? Any plans to get it done?

I don't know if it's the most difficult per se, but I have never liked doing the outside things. I feel like I'm in a small minority among my peers but I don't like gardening at all. Spreading mulch was about the only part of it that gave me any satisfaction. Other than actually having flowers to enjoy, of course! Now the nice thing about where we live this year is that outside maintenance is not our responsibility so I don't even have to plan to look after any flowerbeds! I am planning to get some potted plants and that sort of thing for our little patio, but I'm not even that motivated to do that because I don't have my patio furniture here.

Porch furniture that needs to be brought here.
Wish I could bring the view as well.

2. Your favorite pastel color? Favorite thing you own in a pastel shade?

I'm not one to choose pastels but I guess lavender or pastel blue would be my favorite of those colors. What do I even own in pastel? Hmmm. Well . . . my two favorite ball caps happen to be pastel colors, and since they may be the only pastel colored things I own, I guess they are my favorites.

3. Do you like ham? Do you fix ham year round or is it mostly just a 'holiday food'? Baked ham - ham and eggs - ham and cheese sandwich - scalloped potatoes and ham - Hawaiian pizza . . . what's your pleasure?

 I do like ham, but we do not eat it at holidays. Especially not for dinner on Resurrection Day. (We will eat lamb kebabs on Sunday.) If I'm having a sandwich with cold meat, I will choose ham every time, and Hawaiian pizza is my favorite. I love this Ham and Swiss Dip Bread Bowl, and my kids have asked for it on this weekend's menu (just not for Sunday!).

4. Do you celebrate Easter? What did Easter look like when you were a kid? What are your plans for Easter this year?

 We do celebrate Easter, although I prefer to call it Resurrection Day. I can't think of a more exciting and hopeful thing to celebrate than the new life we have in Christ because of his death and resurrection! I don't remember a lot about Easter celebrations when I was a kid, except that usually there was a big Good Friday service with all of the congregations of our denomination in the city joining together. When I was a teen, I always liked singing in the joint choir for that service. For this year I had originally thought we would try having our own Passover seder, but I dropped the ball in planning it. So we won't have a seder as part of our celebration, but our adult kids will be visiting us this weekend so there will be as much family time as we can squeeze in and of course a church service on Sunday.

5. Something that makes you feel hopeful amidst all the chaos and confusion this world brings?

When I feel overwhelmed by the stupidity of so much that is going on in the world, I just have to remind myself that none of it is a surprise to God, and he is still in control. He knows the end from the beginning, and all his promises still stand. He is good even though the world is not. I'm thankful for the visual reminders of sunrises, the return of birds in the spring, and the flowers that still bloom; and the happy and hopeful sounds of music and children laughing.

As for me, I will always have hope;
I will praise you more and more.
My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds,
of your saving acts all day long―
though I know not how to relate them all.
I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, Sovereign LORD;
I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
Since my youth, God, you have taught me,
and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
Even when I am old and gray,
do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
your mighty deeds to all are to come.
~Psalm 71:14-18~

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I don't like to sound like a commercial, but I am going to do a little bit of a promotion here. I got to review an advanced screening of the movie The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli and it was so beautiful that I wish I could see it on the big screen. This is a link to my review that I hope you'll visit and by the way, there is a little Amazon gift card giveaway involved. I'd love to have one of my friends from the Hodgepodge win it!

  2. Hello,
    I enjoyed your #5. I enjoyed your reminders to us that yes, even with the world going INSANE around us, the return of birds in spring, flowers, happy sounds of music and children.
    Thank you for that!

  4. Standing right there with you (minority) about 'outside' work, Kym. I figure anything I do, the armadillos are likely to say, "I can do better." Love your thoughts on #5!

  5. I don't enjoy time in the garden either but do try to get out there 3 or so times a year to keep everything looking nice. I love seeing the flowers but hate weeding and planting and all that other work.

  6. I love to work in a garden, but since we now live in a condo community, I have very little space for a garden. I do like ham, but I don't like baking it. And, I will be playing handbells at our church. I'm hoping I don't mess up and make my "oops" face! Have a blessed Resurrection Day!

  7. I love lamb. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. I went and saw The Journey last Tuesday with my girls. I really enjoyed it. So beautiful and Loved the music and scenery. Not a high budget movie but still very enjoyable and beautiful as you said,
