Lovin' the Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  Did you watch the Super Bowl? Did your team win? What's your favorite game day snack for whatever sport is happening?

I did watch the Super Bowl! Or as I like to call it, The Superb Owl. It is the only NFL game I ever watch, and I pay almost no attention to the league the rest of the year, so I'm there for the game day dramas and controversies, and to critique the commercials, half-time show, and anthem. (Not a lot of standout commercials this year, but only a couple were total stinkers IMO. The national anthem by Jon Batiste was fantastic, one of the best, and I loved Lauren Daigle's performance of America the Beautiful. Kendrick Lamar's half-time show was boring, unintelligible, and pointless. I wanted to like Samuel L. Jackson's appearance, but his lines didn't make sense to anyone who was unfamiliar with Lamar's music, so the only thing that I actually enjoyed was the appearance of SZA.) Since I don't follow the NFL, I don't have a team I consider "mine" but yes, the team I was cheering for this year did win. My favorite snack . . . my ham and cheese bread bowl that I make for Superb Owl every year.

2. What's your superpower?

It would be easier for me to name my toxic trait. Maybe my superpower is the positive view of my toxic trait? I can function on very little sleep for days at a stretch.

 3. Will you do anything special on Valentine's Day? If so, do share. Any thoughts on/about this particular holiday? Share a favorite verse or quote relating to love.

It's on Friday, isn't it? We don't have any plans - at least none that I am aware of at this time. We might go to the Ohio State hockey game - isn't that romantic? We're going out for dinner with friends on Sunday, but that's not really for Valentine's Day.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
~I John 4:7-11~

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt. ~Charles M. Schulz

4. Are you a fan of the rom-com genre? If so, what's one of your favorites? If you're not a movie-goer then what about a book you love that features a great love story? How about a favorite love song?

I don't watch movies often and rom-com isn't what I'd choose. I guess I prefer rom-com to serious romance movies, but I can't name one of the top of my head that I'm certain would be in that genre. I read a lot of mystery, but with main characters that have a romantic storyline. I tried to think of something that really stood out as a good love story, and remembered a Pepper Basham book I read a few years ago that I loved. Hope Between The Pages. It's a dual timeline story so there's a great romance in each time setting. I can't choose a favorite love song - there are too many! One that's kind of special is Somewhere Out There. It was very popular in the year before hubby and I got married, and for part of that year I was living back with my family in Calgary, and he was still in Ontario.

5.  Let's get creative . . . write an acrostic using the word L-O-V-E.

 I'm clearly not a poet:

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Are signs like this common at schools? I imagine everyone's engine running in the carpool line and I can see how that would make for some unpleasant air quality, but I thought the sign was kind of funny:

I've been having a tough time getting stuff done lately. Maybe it's the winter blahs, but I've had even less motivation than usual, and I really need to focus and get some of my projects finished. The spare room has to be ready for the kids in just a couple weeks! I'm late in getting the Hodgepodge posted and I guess I'll be late visiting everyone too, but I will get it done!

Are you doing anything special for Valentine's Day? Leave a comment and let me know!

    1. Yeah I'm not sure what we do could really be called "celebrating" Valentine's Day. It's one of what I call the Hallmark Holidays. LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. The symbolism of the half time show was : can we exist as a nation if our country is divided. As a speech language pathologist we are required to take cultural sensitivity training ; I suggest you do the same.

  3. I've never seen that sign. Interesting. I was the Director of a Preschool and we had a car lane for pick up. I wanted them idling so they could move along lol. Wow...that comment above mine reads a bit harsh, but perhaps is not meant to be so. I was also a speech pathologist, but we were never required to take any sort of cultural sensitivity training. As far as the halftime show goes, I'm not the demographic. I know he's a rap icon and that's fine, but I am not a fan of rap and find most of it degrading towards women. Also, I don't want a political point made at the Superbowl, no matter which side of the fence you're on party wise. Play ball, have fun, respect the flag, and entertain us. Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. the commenter above is a troll trying to stir up trouble, as far as I can tell. No idea why it is coming here, but I'm not amused.

I feel the same about the half time show and sports in general. It's supposed to be entertainment, and inserting political point-making takes away from that. I'm not the target audience for Lamar and I understand that, but I do listen to and enjoy lots of different musical styles, so can usually find something to appreciate about any genre, and this performance just didn't appeal to me.

  4. You are the second one that I've read mentioning lack of sleep. I've been waking up at 3am and tossing and turning. Hopefully it doesn't stick there. I missed doing any visiting to hodgepodge blogs on Wednesday or any blogs. The day was topsy turvy. Your cheese bread bowl sounds so yummy. I'm with you about that weird halftime show. OYE! I am like you and only watch NFL for the super bowl. Happy Valentine's day to you and yours!

    1. I've been having trouble getting good sleep for a couple of years now, but I guess I get just enough to get by. I know part of the problem is a few less-than-helpful sleep habits that I need to fix! Thanks for stopping by and commenting, and I hope your Valentine's Day was a good one!

  5. I don't watch football at all. It seems so pointless (no pun intended). But, I usually record the Super Bowl to watch the commercials. It seems like many of them are being replayed which didn't seem to be the norm in years past? Maybe, those sponsors are finally realizing how crazy it is to spend so much money on one airing of a commercial. We are going to my oldest granddaughter's show choir cabaret for Valentine's Day. But, first, I'm getting my hair cut and then buying a red velvet Bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes to celebrate!

    1. Maybe the advertisers are rethinking how they spend their budgets? Ad spots for Superb Owl are ridiculously expensive and that's what amazes me - that so many companies spent that many millions of dollars on an ad that might not even land with consumers.

A show choir cabaret sounds like a wonderful event for Valentine's Day! And a red velvet Bundt cake sounds delicious. Hope it was a fabulous as it sounds! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. I enjoyed your acrostic! I don't think I have ever seen a sign like that; if anything I remember being rushed along the car line because it took me too long to get all 3 boys in and strapped down. LOL.

    1. That makes sense about the car line - I would think moving the cars through the line as efficiently as possible would be best. Either way, I'm glad I didn't have to navigate that during my kids' school years! LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  7. I'm glad the team you were cheering for won. Commercials were not the best. Your food looks yummy. That's pretty amazing that you can function for days on only a little bit of rest. The game sounds good and so does dinner on Sunday with friends. A lot of people mentioned mysteries and not rom-coms. I like your acrostic. We ordered some Cheesecake Factory for delivery. We are going out tomorrow for dinner to celebrate Gabby's Birthday.

    1. I noticed that many in the Hodgepodge group seemed to like mysteries of some kind. Cheesecake Factory sounds delicious - hope your celebration tomorrow is wonderful too! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  8. Maybe you are suffering with the winter doldrums. If you can just find a glimmer of spring, maybe that will help you get motivated again. I have good, productive days and not-so productive days. And I question whether anything I do matters. We are seeing signs of spring here and with each day that I can be in the sunshine for a bit, I feel better.
Your Super Bowl eats look delicious. We use Super Bowl as an excuse to eat all the snacks and junk food at our house. Thank goodness it comes only once a year!!

  9. Catching up on some comments. Enjoyed your answers. I'm usually watching SB for food, company, commercials, etc..I will choose a team, usually the underdog. I have never seen a sign like that one. I'm going to try to do this next round of WQ. We'll see how it goes.
