It is very cold here in central Ohio this week. Cold enough that at least some schools are closed, and I suppose maybe some businesses might be as well. We're still going to work, though I wish I didn't have to! I'm glad I don't work outside, glad the walks from my front door to my car and from my car to my office are very short.
Antisthenes says that in a certain faraway land the cold is so intense that words freeze as soon as they are uttered, and after some time then thaw and become audible, so that words spoken in winter go unheard until the next summer. ~Plutarch
Thankfully, it's not THAT cold!
When the days are short and nights are long, and the temperatures drop, of course most of us prefer to stay inside and enjoy the cozy aspect of winter. As much as I love the beauty of a fresh white blanket of snow, I'm quite happy to look at it through the window from the comfort of an armchair near the fireplace. Probably snuggled in a warm blanket, and with a hot drink in hand. So it's not surprising that I tend to sleep a bit more in winter as well.
Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal underneath, for the instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong in me. ~Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Winter is the time of promise because there is so little to do - or because you can now and then permit yourself the luxury of thinking so. ~Stanley Crawford
There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you . . . In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~Ruth Stout
As the changing of seasons often reminds us, times of rest and quiet are part of the rhythm of life and can be a time to relax and enjoy what we've worked for and gathered as well as to gather strength and prepare for a growing season to come.
Like the seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. ~Khalil Gibran
I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again." ~Lewis Carroll
Sometimes I think it would be nice to just snuggle down in a comfy bed until the warmer weather comes, but of course that's not completely practical. I think about that wise lady mentioned in Proverbs, who thought ahead and prepared her home and family for the cold days, and I wonder if she spent some of her less active winter season weaving and sewing, or maybe going over her accounts and considering the real estate she planned to buy.
She is not afraid for her household when it snows,
for all in her household are doubly clothed.
~Proverbs 31:21~
As I sit here in my extra sweater, grateful for a warm home with a fireplace and furnace, and for cozy flannel sheets and fuzzy blankets, I'm reminded that these things are gifts and blessings from God. Reminded that the promise of spring and the restful days of winter are both blessings from God.
You established the cycle of day and night;
you put the moon and sun in place.
You set up all the boundaries of the earth;
you created the cycle of summer and winter.
~Psalm 74:16-17~
He sends his command to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
He spreads the snow like wool
and scatters the frost like ashes.
He hurls down his hail like pebbles.
Who can withstand his icy blast?
He sends his word and melts them;
he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
~Psalm 147:15-18~

Quoting reminds me there are other people in the world besides only me.
And other thoughts besides mine, and other ways of thinking.
