Another one (because I found it really hard to choose between these two, and I could probably list four or five others too) is the winter our family went to a cabin in Deep Creek for a few days. We didn't ski or do any winter sports, just holed up in our friend's cozy cabin and played games, did puzzles, read our books, and relaxed. We ventured into town for a couple of restaurant meals but for the most part it was just a cozy winter retreat.
I know I've been tangled in red tape since this, but one of the absolutely worst experiences I had with it was a couple of years ago when our health insurance company completely screwed up our coverage. I found out about two months after a visit to the dentist that the insurance company had processed the claim through an old policy that was with my husband's previous employer and the policy should have been terminated over a year before. I won't bore you with the story, but it was nightmarish to say the least. Hours and hours of phone calls and being transferred from one place to another, promises that it was fixed but of course it wasn't, the previous employer AND the current employer office people having to be in on the phone calls and it just went on and on. For months before it was fixed. To a certain extent I expect the runaround when dealing with government, insurance, or banking, and I prepare myself for the process, but that was just beyond all reason. One trick I've learned is that if it doesn't appear to be a quick and easy answer is that I don't mess around - I ask to speak to the person at the top of that food chain who has the ability and authority to solve the issue.
3. Do you eat/like fish? Do you cook fish at home? What's your favorite fish dish? Ever been ice fishing?
I like some fish, but I'm fussy. No tilapia, and no fish that is served with head or fins or anything still attached. I cook fish at home occasionally, every couple of weeks or so. My favorite is a good Irish pub style beer batter fish and chips, or fried Lake Erie perch. I've never been ice fishing, or any kind of fishing, and have no interest. My brother loves to fish and regularly goes ice fishing though.
I did! I watched all of the inauguration ceremony and a little bit of the rally. I am a 10 on that scale, because I am one of those rare people that are politics junkies. I have loved following politics for most of my adult life. I consider it almost like a sport. Although the workings of government and the political machinery can have very serious ramifications to our lives, I find it entertaining to follow closely and to be able to analyze and predict outcomes. The trick, I think, is to be able to treat it like following the sports teams you like or maybe a reality TV show you like. You can be very passionate and involved in it, but can turn off the TV when the game is over and think about something else. As closely as I follow it, I almost never think about it or pay attention to it in the evenings or on weekends, and except for the few people that I know enjoy talking politics, I almost never bring it up in conversation. At this point I'm not involved or following the really local political scene much, because I just haven't figured it out. I was more involved when we lived in Maryland, even volunteering in school board and gubernatorial campaigns in the last election cycle that we were there.
I have a couple of heavy comforters that I'd consider the coziest. One is actually still in the Maryland house though. That one has a soft fake fur on one side and thick fleece on the other side. The one I have here has thick fleece on one side and a lodge theme print on the other side. The lodge print adds to the cozy aesthetic. Ironically, these blankets have both been for the guest rooms, and not for my own bed!
It is so very cold here today! And I know I shouldn't complain because there are other places where this is normal through the winter . . . I've LIVED in places where this is normal! As I write it's hovering around -5º F and it's just not okay. Our current Wednesday Quotes theme is Winter Sleep, and I dearly wish I could crawl back in bed and do just that until it warms up some! Visit and join the WQ link-up any time in the next couple of weeks: WQ - Winter Sleep
What's the weather like where you are? Leave a comment and let me know!
Wow! Seeing the Niagara Falls must have been pretty amazing and the cold weather and that winter retreat sounds just perfect.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I don't even like to look at fish with things still attached! Yes, give me beer battered fish any day!
I am hoping this weather warms up soon. I hate the cold.
We've been to Niagara Falls many times, but it's so different in winter. :-) Our temperatures are up just a little bit today and I'm hoping the trend continues. Hope your weather warms up soon too - thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI like the idea of viewing it as a sport. Although I can also get worked up about sports lol. I've never been to Niagara Falls. It looks pretty in winter! My daughter got engaged there, but it was June so no ice. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteOh I can get plenty worked up over sports and over politics, but I'm glad I have the ability (usually!) to just go on about my life after my team loses or something happens in politics that is upsetting. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteThe winter retreat sounds so nice! Nice get a way.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Niagara Falls but would like to see it.
It was a very nice retreat and I hope we can do something like that again someday. Whenever you go to Niagara Falls, I do recommend seeing it during warmer weather if possible! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteNiagara Falls looks so beautiful. I am not a fan of ice fishing. My temp was 2 this morning so I won't complain!!
ReplyDeleteIt was about that temperature here this morning too - thankfully has warmed up just a bit! Thanks for stopping by and commenting - stay warm!
DeleteI've been to Niagara Falls in the summer and winter. It's definitely nicer to walk around in the summer but it's beautiful in the winter as well. I also gave myself a ten on the politics answer!
ReplyDeleteI actually like Niagara Falls best in the fall when it's not super hot and muggy. Seems like it's incredibly crowded at all times of the year though, and it's the crowds that bother me most. I'm glad I'm not the only one that is a ten on following politics! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI enjoyed reading your answers! I've only been to Niagara Falls once many years ago, and we went to the Canadian side because we were going just beyond there to visit some friends. I remember how awesome it was! I can only imagine how beautiful it would be in the winter. I love the cabin where you stayed, and your time spent there sounds just about perfect to me! We did that this past fall with our son and his wife and my husband's brother and his wife. It was very relaxing and beautiful in the mountains in the fall. I also watched the Inauguration and much of the after rally, etc. It was great. I was very proud of Carrie Underwood's "performance"...she is definitely first class!! The weather where we are is pretty cold for us...we live in north central Florida and it is currently 36 degrees, but with the wind it feels like 29. Yesterday we were under a winter storm watch. We didn't get the snow that they got just to the north of us, but it was still very cold and windy. This has been a very cold winter for us here in Florida! When it comes to fish...I prefer to order it in a restaurant as opposed to cooking it here at home. Thankfully hubby doesn't fish so I don't have to cook it very often...Maybe Mrs. Paul's fish sticks now and then. LOL. I do love Salmon and would eat it more often if hubby liked it. So I get it at a restaurant too. I enjoyed your post. Have a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteI agree that Carrie Underwood's performance was outstanding. Poised and confident in every way. Your weather does sound pretty cold for Florida! Hope you're staying warm and cozy. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI love the idea of a cosy winter retreat, all that time to just read and relax. Niagara Falls must have looked amazing in the winter. I'm in the UK and temperatures are starting to raise a little but it's still very cold, damp and dreary.
ReplyDeleteIt was the perfect winter retreat for our family at the time, and I'd love to do it again. Hope you're staying warm! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteNiagara would definitely be cold in the winter!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like my kind of winter retreat! I am always fascinated by the icy/snow photos of Niagara falls (especially those few times the falls themselves freeze!) but am not sure I'm brave enough to go out in the cold and actually see it for myself.
ReplyDeleteI love most fish and seafood but I definitely do not want it to LOOK like fish when I'm eating it.
Winter at Niagara Falls would be an interesting experience. I'm guessing the crowds are fewer, too. The cozy cabin retreat sounded ideal. So you still have a home in Maryland? Your red tape experience sounded like a phone tag nightmare. Glad you finally got it sorted. Our lows have been in the teens but with no snow.
ReplyDeleteNIagara Falls IS stunning in winter. I went to college in Rochester so we went often during finals weeks.
ReplyDeleteWeather where I live in eastern NY is cold today but warmer than yesterday. It's currently a balmy 21. Not sure where you live but our temps yesterday when I woke up at 7 was only 5 degrees!!
We went to Niagara Falls one winter when everything was iced over. It was gorgeous! I love visiting the Falls but haven't been for a several years now. I love a pub fish and chips dinner, too, but I also like tilapia. I don't cook fish at all, but I have ice fished (didn't catch anything because I didn't last much beyond drilling the hole). I love winter, but this one can end sooner rather than later as it's been so cold.

I'm catching up from last week. I enjoyed your answers. What gorgeous photos of niagra. I would love to be holed up in a cabin.
