Wednesday Hodgepodge - Shared Values

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What is one good thing you often take for granted?

I try to be mindful of how fortunate I am, but I think I take my general good health for granted. I guess because I do have some minor complaints and I'm overweight, so I don't always appreciate the fact that I'm overall very healthy and so is everyone in my family.

2. What's the boldest piece of clothing in your wardrobe?

Hmmm . . . define "bold" . . . I'm not sure what would count as bold. I mostly wear t-shirts and jeans, and my color choices lean towards black and shades of blue. I have a sparkly red blouse that I think is bold just because of the color. I have a couple of dresses that I don't wear often but are bold combinations of black and white so they stand out. One has a yellow waistband that is an added bold pop of color.

3. Do you think common interests or common values are the key to people getting along? Elaborate.

I think having basic values in common is most helpful for getting along. I can get along with people who have very different political or religious views than me when I feel that we can be respectful of each other and want good and right outcomes even if we disagree on how to arrive at those outcomes. However, I think having interests in common is necessary to bring people together with a desire to get along. For instance, music or sports or some kind of shared hobby or cause can bring very different people together into some kind of community, then those who share values will probably get along best.

4. November 6 is National Nacho Day . . . do you like nachos? How do you like yours? Do you make them at home or only order out?

I like nachos although I don't have them often, and probably won't have them today. I like just the basic nacho chips with nacho cheese, no salsa. To me, it's something to order at a sports event or maybe at the fair.

5.  Have you spent any time in Washington D.C.? If so what did you think? If not, is that a place you'd like to visit? What do you think about politics as a career choice?

Having lived in Maryland for almost twenty-five years, I had plenty of opportunities to visit DC. We've used the DC airports and the train station quite a few times; we've done a lot of the touristy things - the Smithsonian museums, the zoo, the Mall and memorials; and we've attended quite a few concerts and sports events.

I loathe the traffic in DC, and the drivers are some of the worst anywhere. And the crowds - ugh. The concert and sports venues are great, and the Smithsonian and other tourist attractions are impressive and I do think every American should try and see some of them. That said, riding the metro or driving in the district is enough to give me a panic attack.

I don't think politics should be a career, at least no elected position should be. I believe there should be term limits for senators and representatives, so that none of these people can fossilize there.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

A highlight of the weekend was being with my Maryland kids AND with my parents. My granddaughter is an absolute joy and she was especially sweet helping in the kitchen. Here she is helping Gramma (my mom) roll out dough.

God bless America!

Did you answer the hodgepodge questions this week? Have you spent time in Washington DC? Leave a comment and let me know!

Simple Meal Planning - Plan to Eat

  1. Oh yes the D.C. traffic is some of the worst in the world. I remember visiting my daughter once and needing to put gas in her car (always lol). She wasn't worried because it was only 2 miles from her home, but it took us something like 30 min to get there. It's awful! Still I enjoyed visiting the sites and there are some great restaurants there. I'm glad you had family time. Have a great day!

    1. I found the streets terribly confusing as well, even though I totally understand the grid plan. Glad I was able to visit so many historic sites there and even celebrate the 4th on the Mall one year, but I'm so glad I never had to commute into the district regularly! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. Enjoyed reading your answers! That is neat that you lived so close to the capital! I have never visited DC but I would like to- especially in light of very recent political events :). How wonderful for three generations to get to spend time together! You are very fortunate! Have a great Wednesday!

    1. I'm disappointed that I haven't been able to tour the White House in all those years we lived there. Maybe I'll be more interested in planning it during the next couple of years? ;-) We actually had four generations together and yes, we were very fortunate to be able to do that. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. That picture with your mom and granddaughter is precious. I agree with your statement that there should be term limits for senators and representatives, so that none of these people can fossilize there. That word fossilize, made me laugh!

    1. Glad I could bring some humor to what might be a divisive topic! I always thought term limits might be a bipartisan issue but who knows. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. Sweet photo of your granddaughter with your mom. How nice to spend time together. Happy Hodgepodge to you!

    1. I wish we'd thought to take a couple of four generation photos when Mom and Dad were here - other than the family photo. The dough was for rollkuchen, by the way - you might be my only reader who is familiar with that one! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. I think the supreme court justices should have term limits too right along with the senators and representatives. I have always wanted to visit DC to see the museums and historical sights but I guess not bad enough to actually have made that happen. I find I am often intimidated about visiting large cities not having had much experience with them and not liking crowds.

    1. I have mixed feelings about whether the justices should have term limits. I guess I can see both sides to that, and if there was a term limit, I think it should be a very long one. I'm definitely intimidated about visiting large cities - more so after having lived in a small town/rural setting for almost all of my adult life! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. What an adorable granddaughter you have - so cute! I agree on term limits. It should never be a lifelong career and I also believe congress and senate should have the same medical insurance that their constituents have since they are the ones who created them. They should be docked pay when they don’t show up to work. Oh and they don’t need that many taxpayer funded paid recesses. Seems they have only a small window in which they actually work.
LOL - there I said it! As for the SCJ - no term limits but perhaps an age limit. I’d like to keep it as close to what it was originally.
    Enjoyed your answers.

    1. oh yes, you're so right about congress and senate having the same health insurance they've imposed on the rest of us! And they should NOT get the big raises and all of that either. I want them to be reasonably compensated for their service, but maybe if politics wasn't such a "get rich scheme" we'd have some better people there, actually serving their consituents and the country rather than their own bank accounts. Touched a nerve - haha! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  7. Thank for your visit. I don't recall the traffic being that bad when we visited Washington but perhaps that's because I'm used to London traffic lol.

    1. Well, yes, I guess the perception of how bad traffic is might be different based on what one is used to! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
