Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong. ~James Bryce
Patriotism is easy to understand in America. It means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country. ~Calvin Coolidge
I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him. ~Abraham Lincoln
Next week we'll celebrate a couple of national "birthdays" - Canada Day is on July 1st, and Independence Day is on July 4th. We are proud Americans and love the United States, but we also love the country we grew up in. We don't get the day off for Canada Day, of course, but we usually mark the day somehow, maybe with a meal that includes some foods that we associate with Canada. To be honest, most years it depends what day of the week July 1st lands on and what our plans are for the rest of that week. (Our daughter's birthday also falls during the first week of July, so we have to make room for that celebration as well!) Celebrating Canada Day is becoming more like a moment of nostalgia and affection for our homeland, and I think we'll always love Canada in that sense, but when I think of patriotic loyalty, the USA comes first. I believe it should be that way, not only for people born and raised as American citizens, but for those who have chosen to come here and become American citizens. For Americans, patriotism should mean love and loyalty to America first and foremost.
There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag . . . and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people. ~Theodore Roosevelt
This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in. ~Theodore Roosevelt
All of us . . . should remember that no amount of flag-waving, pledging allegiance, or fervent singing of the national anthem is evidence that we are patriotic in the real sense of the word . . . Outward behavior, while important, is not the real measure of a man's patriotism. ~Eleanor Roosevelt
True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else. ~Clarence Darrow
My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. ~John F. Kennedy
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
~Psalm 33:12~
(This declaration was about the Old Testament people Israel, but since God wanted to bless all nations through his people Israel, I believe any nation whose people honor God can receive those blessings.)
What does patriotism mean to you? If you're not American, how is patriotism expressed in your country? Leave a comment and let me know!
