One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

first choice
it's your choice
choice food or wine

 If we're honest, when we have a chance, we all prefer to have first choice. If I get to choose first, I can select the option that I think is best or most advantageous for me. The best thing about eating out is having a menu to choose from, so I can have the dish I most want without having to do the work myself. And we can each have our choice of dishes from the menu even if others we're dining with don't prefer the same one! When my husband and I eat out, he'll often choose shrimp or other seafood that I won't eat and won't likely make at home because of that. His choice! I often choose beer battered fish and chips, because that's a favorite of mine and I rarely make it myself. My choice!

In recent reading in the Old Testament, I've noticed that the offerings God approves of are the best of what was available. The firstfruits or the choice parts. God wants us to give him our best, not our cast-offs and leftovers. He wants us to trust him to continue to provide for us.

Then to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name―there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the LORD.
~Deuteronomy 12:11~

But God doesn't intend that we are to never have anything good. His intention is to bless us with the abundance of his goodness. When we choose to give him everything, including our best, he delights in giving us his own good gifts.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
~James 1:17-18~

He has chosen us. It's our choice how we will respond.

And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving . . . But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
~Luke 10:39-42~

LORD, you are my God;
I will exalt you. I will praise your name,
for you have accomplished wonders,
plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
On this mountain,
the LORD of Armies will prepare for all the peoples
a feast of choice meat,
a feast with aged wine, prime cuts of choice meat,
fine vintage wine.
When he has swallowed up death once and for all,
the LORD God will wipe away the tears from every face
and remove his people's disgrace from the whole earth,
for the LORD has spoken.
On that day it will be said,
"Look, this is our God;
we have waited for him, and he has saved us.
This is the LORD, we have waited for him.
Let's rejoice and be glad in his salvation."
~Isaiah 25:1, 6, 8-9~

  3. Choice is one of those things I stress about. I used to use that word with my students when they were acting out. So, I guess I see it almost as a bad thing. And, when it comes to a restaurant, all the choices on the menu stress me out, too! I want whatever I choose to be good so I end up always ordering the same thing whether I really like it or not. It's a wonderful thing to know God always chooses us, isn't it?

    1. Sometimes having too many options to choose from can paralyze us, right? Or having to choose when we really can't see a strong advantage of one option over another. In those situations, it can be hard. But it IS good to know God always chooses us, and that he helps us make the hard choices in life too. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
