Wednesday Hodgepodge - Watch and Learn

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  Do you complete your own tax returns or hire out? Something you've found taxing lately?

Last year we went to the professional because there were just too many unusual items in our 2022. This year, as usual, I'm using the H&R Block software.

Keeping my kitchen clean and meals planned. I don't know why, but I seem to have run out of motivation for those particular tasks lately.

2. It's spring (in the northern hemisphere anyway) . . . would you rather spend the day hiking in the great outdoors or planting a garden? Do you/will you have a garden this year? Flowers, vegetables, or a bit of both?

Definitely hiking! I have no interest in planting a garden, so we won't have one this year. We don't have space anyway. I'm toying with the possibility of having some planters in the patio but I think I'd be inviting failure since I don't have a green thumb at all. If we plant anything this year, it will be flowers.

3. Do you consider yourself a patient person? In what sort of situation is patience not desirable? Are you happy with the degree of patience you have in your daily life? If not, what can you do to cultivate more of this quality in your life?

I think I'm patient in the big things and in general, but I'm quite impatient with inconsequential little things. Like slow walking or bad driving. That will irritate me but beyond grumbling under my breath or complaining to whomever might be with me, it doesn't affect me. I can't think of an example, but sometimes it's necessary to make a quick decision or take quick action, and waiting too long might be a problem. In general, I suppose I'm happy with the level of patience I usually have, although there's ALWAYS room for improvement in this area! I think to cultivate patience, it's helpful to remind myself that God is in control and his timing is perfect so I don't need to fuss and fidget impatiently.

4. Do you like the flavor cinnamon? If so what's your favorite something made with cinnamon?

I love cinnamon! My favorite would be cinnamon rolls. Any kind of cinnamon rolls!

5.  Learn by watching or learn by doing? Elaborate.

More often I learn by doing. Watching is very helpful, but only at the very beginning of a learning process. Then I want to do it while my "instructor" watches. When I'm learning something new at work, I like to share a computer screen with my supervisor and do the new process while she talks me through it (or texts me through it!). That way she can see what I'm looking at if I have questions, and can check to make sure I'm doing the process correctly.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Yes, we did look at the eclipse on Monday. We don't live quite in the path of totality - maybe 94% or so. At my husband's work, they all went outside and had a brief watch party. At my work, they handed out glasses to everyone, and we were able to just step outside whenever we wanted. So I went out a couple times before and after the "totality" and did stay out to watch right at the height. Such an interesting phenomenon, and a reminder that God has created such a well-ordered and well-designed world that we can predict these things accurately. We couldn't do that if the world was random!

Jemima Puddle-Duck has made herself quite at home just outside our townhouse door and now has NINE eggs she's incubating! (When we first showed the nest to our seven-year-old granddaughter, of course the mama duck was not nearby. I thought it was so cute and funny for a little seven-year-old to say very matter-of-factly, "shouldn't the mother be incubating her eggs?") Anyway, when the ducks first chose that nest spot, Jemima would waddle off nervously every time we were at the door, but I guess she's decided that we can be trusted to not disturb the eggs. She's not as quick to step away, and yesterday she continued sitting on the nest quite contentedly while I stood at the door hunting for my keys.

In other birding news, I managed to get a photo of a bluebird on the weekend! It's not good quality, but can certainly identify it!

Were you able to watch the eclipse? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. I'm with you on the garden. A few containers might not be a bad thing but I just don't have it in my to do an entire garden anymore. We too watched the eclipse at work. We had 99.8% totality. It was ok but I didn't feel all super excited about it like so many people. I would not have traveled hundreds of miles to see it in totality. We had people renting our cabin for the event who came from Southern Alabama. geez... LOL!

    1. I'm glad I saw it, but I'm also glad I didn't use up vacation days and spend money traveling somewhere to see 100% totality. :-) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. Definitely not a garden girl. I tried to grow one pepper plant two summers ago. One plant. It was a fail. I am definitely the one buying fresh veggies at the farmer's market...and I so appreciate all those who grow and sell those veggies to the city girls like me!!:)

  3. I am definitely a person who learns by doing. I get so irritated when I'm trying to read directions. I'd just rather do it. I love gardening, but I don't really have the room to do it.

    1. I get frustrated when someone keeps showing me and showing me but doesn't let me try. There's only so much I can learn as an observer - I need to do it! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

    1. Mrs Duck is still doing fine with her eggs. I think she's chosen a spot well away from where people will let their dogs sniff around, and it's reasonably safe from crows as well. Our granddaughter is a clever little character, and she really knows animals! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. Some nights I run out of motivation to finish cleaning the kitchen. How fun to have some ducklings.

    1. most nights I run out of motivation to clean the kitchen! LOL So far the crows have left the eggs alone so I'm very hopeful we'll get to enjoy some ducklings in a couple weeks! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
