Share Our Lives 2024, a monthly link-up to share aspects of our daily lives with each other. It's the new name of what used to be the Not Just A Mom link-up, and I like the title change! This month we're invited to share the story of how we met our Significant Other. Since I don't have much spare time for blogging these days, I hoped it would be okay to recycle part of my anniversary post from this summer as a starting point.
The very first question in that anniversary questionnaire is about how we met, so I'll expand a little!
How did you meet?
We met at Bible college in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I was a freshman from Calgary, Alberta, and he was a sophomore from Brantford, Ontario, so we really met in the middle! It was a small school and we both lived in the dorms, so it was a situation where it was relatively easy to get to know everyone else at the school. Even if you didn't have classes together, you'd see others in the dining hall or at campus activities. Since it was his second year, he already had a lot of friends, and it turned out we had several mutual friends and were introduced early on. But neither of us thought much about it at that point. We had a couple of classes together, and a few opportunities to interact during those first several weeks at school. By chance, we both happened to be part of a small core group that regularly went out for coffee in the evenings. So we got to be friends, and eventually started dating.
Who was interested first?
That's really hard to say! I'm not sure we know for sure. I think his first impression of me was that I seemed young and probably silly. Like a giddy or clingy girl. So he had to get past that before he was interested! I was probably interested sometime in October, so maybe we got there about the same time.
First date?
I'm not sure of the actual date, but I think it was in early November. We went to McDonalds and to the car wash! We've agreed that was our first official date.
Who said "I love you" first?
I'm not 100% certain, but I think he did.
Where was your first kiss?
In his car on one of our first dates.
How long did it take to get serious?
Well, we started dating in late October or early November and by the February school break he had given me a promise ring and traveled home with me to meet my parents, so a couple of months!
Wedding story?
We got officially engaged on Christmas Eve in 1986, and the wedding was in August 1987. My mom sewed my dress, and I remember specifically that my Grandma put in at least a few stitches in my veil. The pastor who had been my youth pastor before I went to college performed the ceremony. It was a smallish wedding, and I think our entire budget was less than what most brides are spending just on flowers nowadays! My best friend was my maid of honor, and his sister was a bridesmaid. One of his closest friends was best man and my brother was a groomsman.
How long have you been together?
Married for thirty-six years, and a couple for almost thirty-eight years.
