Anniversary Interview

Last week my husband and I celebrated our anniversary―our thirty-sixth anniversary!―and I borrowed this anniversary questionnaire from my blogging friend Joanne at Slices of Life awhile ago because I thought it was a fun way to celebrate the milestone on the blog.

How did you meet?
We met at Bible college. I was a freshman and he was a sophomore, but we had a couple of classes together and since it was a small school it was pretty easy to get to know everyone. We had some mutual friends, and happened to both be part of a small core group that regularly went out for coffee in the evenings. And one thing led to another . . .

First date?
I'm not sure of the actual date, but I think it was in early November. We went to McDonalds and to the car wash! We've agreed that was our first official date.

How long have you been together?
Married for thirty-six years, and a couple for almost thirty-eight years.

Age difference?
He's two years older than me.

Who was interested first?
That's really hard to say! I'm not sure we know for sure. I think his first impression of me was that I seemed young and probably silly. Like a giddy or clingy girl. So he had to get past that before he was interested! I was probably interested sometime in October, so maybe we got there about the same time.

Who is taller?
Oh, he's taller by four or five inches.

Who said "I love you" first?
I'm not 100% certain, but I think he did.

Who is most impatient?
I'm sure that would be me. I'm naturally very impatient!

Most sensitive?
That's a toss-up. It probably depends on the situation and the day.

Loudest?
Once again, that would be me. I have a big laugh, I'm more talkative, I can be awkward, and I even like my music louder.

Most stubborn?
Probably me. Although it probably depends on the issue.

Who falls asleep first?
He does. Almost always. It doesn't help that I haven't been sleeping well at all for quite awhile, but nine times out of ten, he's sleeping before me, even if we go to bed at the same time. In fact, I started writing this in the late evening, and he was probably asleep.

Who cooks better?
I do a lot more of the cooking, just by default. Am I better at it? Maybe. There are some things he definitely does better, like frying bacon and eggs. And we work as a team when we do barbecue, when we grill, and when we deep fry a turkey. I do the prep and the rub, and then he takes over tending the smoker or fryer and deciding when the meat is done and all of that.

Who is the better morning person?
Since he gets more sleep, he is also the better morning person.

Better driver?
He is!

Who drives when you're going somewhere together?
If we're travelling together, he prefers to drive, and I prefer to let him.

Most competitive?
I think he is. He's more into sports and still plays hockey, for one thing. I don't have an athletic or coordinated bone in my body so there's little point in my being competitive about even something like cornhole. I just accept that I will lose, and my goal is basically to not be too terribly embarrassed at how badly I will lose. If it's not anything to do with physical activity or sports, that's where I can be competitive.

Funniest?
I'm going to say I am! But he is really quick with witty comments and has done a lot of very good comedy sketches over the years for all kinds of things at church. I've done some of those too, but my brand of funny is more with story telling, I think.

Where do you eat out most often as a couple?
Not a specific restaurant, but a type of restaurant . . . barbecue. We both love barbecue and are always looking for new places to try, especially on vacations.

Who is more social?
This is clearly me! I'm closer to the extrovert end of the spectrum and love getting together with friends, going out with groups, and doing any kind of social activity.

Who is a neat freak?
I have certain things that I'm fussy about, and he has some things he does that seem sloppy to me, but in general he is more of a neat freak.

Where was your first kiss?
In his car on one of our first dates.

How long did it take to get serious?
Well, we started dating in late October or early November and by the February school break he had given me a promise ring and traveled home with me to meet my parents, so a couple of months!

Who is indecisive?
He would say me, and he would be right! He teases me about being wishy-washy, but in my defense, it's usually about making the decision where to eat out.

Who spends more?
I think this answer has to be me as well. I'm in charge of all the household expenditures like groceries etc, so by default I spend more; but also I'm the one who does the nickle and dime spending that adds up quickly. You know, stopping by the coffee shop drive-thru because I just need a quick pick-me-up, or buying little gifts for kids or grandkids. More than nickles and dimes, but you get the idea.

Who is the first one to admit they are wrong?
This might be a toss-up, but I'll say my husband, because I already admitted I'm more stubborn. I could also claim he's more often wrong, but that wouldn't be very nice of me!

Who sings better?
Me! I'm clearly the singer, since I've been in a choir or chorus of some kind or another almost my entire life, and I've been singing lead and harmony in worship teams for ages and ages. That said, he has a really nice singing voice as well, and has also sung in choirs and small ensembles, but his part is baritone or bass so he rarely sings lead.

Who hogs the remote?
I let him hog it because I barely know how to operate it, and I don't even watch TV much.

Did you go to the same high school?
Nope. I went to high school in Calgary, Alberta, and he was in Brantford, Ontario.

Where is the furthest you have ever travelled?
Together? We've been all over most of North America together at various times, including all the way down the Florida Keys, up to Atlantic Canada, and out to the Pacific coast. We've also been to the Bahamas together.

Niagara Falls in 2018

Pittsburgh in 2019 - yeah, I'm wearing the same top!

Georgia in 2021

We went to a Brazilian steakhouse for our anniversary dinner date, and a friend had asked me to send a photo of the two of us at the restaurant. We didn't take a selfie there, but did take one quickly when we got home, just so I could send the requested picture. So it's definitely not the best quality photo, but it's the most recent of us as a couple!

  1. What a fun read. I stopped to think how I would answer the same questions. We celebrated our anniversary on 07.11 but we have a second anniversary - the blessing of our home together and marriage on 09.28 so maybe I will borrow these questions and answer them then.

Great photos of you kids. Seems you knew pretty quick that you'd found your Prince Charming. My PC and I dated for 5 years before taking the plunge.

  2. This was so fun to read and I loved seeing all these photos of you two together! I am not very coordinated either so I tend to not be competitive with anything athletic but other than that I am very competitive.

    1. That's where I get competitive too - anything that doesn't involve ME having to be athletic or coordinated! LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
