A Heartfelt Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What does love mean to you?

I could answer all the other questions pretty quickly, and it's a good thing, because it's late on Wednesday when I'm working on this. But this one is stumping me as far as coming up with just a couple sentences or phrases. Hmm. I guess love means doing what's right and good and honors another person. Treating others like they are valuable and worthy of respect, the way I'd want to be treated; and following the example of Jesus.

2. Is love blind?

Interesting question. I think love is often blind, but I'm not sure that's always a good thing. I think sometimes we are blind to the faults or shortcomings of a loved one, and if that means we give them grace it could be a good thing, but if it means we ignore or put up with bad behavior it could be harmful. I prefer to think of the saying as meaning we choose to focus on what we love about others rather than what might irritate or annoy us.

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind;
And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind . . .
~William Shakespeare, Midsummer Night's Dream

3. How do you remember Valentine's Day as a kid? Do you have any special plans for the day this year?

I really don't have any memories of Valentine's Day from when I was a kid. I'm sure we exchanged Valentines with classmates at school but I don't specifically remember doing it. My mom's birthday is right before Valentine's Day, so I kind of remember doing special things to celebrate her birthday more than doing anything for Valentine's.

Since I'm just writing this really late on Wednesday evening, I guess I can say that we didn't really have any special plans. Instead of our usual Dinner + Discipleship at church this evening, we had a pasta dinner served by the youth as a fundraiser, so that was a little different. My husband and I are still deciding what, if anything, we'll do as a Valentine's treat.

4. Are you a fan of the movie genre known as 'rom-com'? What's your favorite (or one of your favorities)?

I can take 'em or leave 'em. I'm not a big movie watcher, but rom-com is a genre I'm fine with watching occasionally. I had trouble thinking of movies I loved that might be considered rom-com, so I did a quick search and browsed a website's list of two or three dozen of the 'greatest' rom-coms and found that I hadn't heard of about half of them, and had seen less than half of the ones I had heard of! Groundhog Day, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and You've Got Mail were on the list and are movies that I really liked.

5. What's something you recently put your heart into?

I try to really put my heart into chorus rehearsal each week.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'm tired and running behind schedule here, so I'll have to keep it short! I feel bad that it always takes me at least a couple days before I can visit others in link-ups. Eventually I'll figure it out, I suppose. I really need a couple more hours in each day so I can get stuff done and still get enough sleep. I put together a Valentine's Day post for Wednesday Quotes this week and managed to have that scheduled to post this morning. See it here: WQ - Valentine's Day

Did you do anything special for Valentine's Day? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. My husband and I did nothing. I baked him his favorite cookies. Our wedding anniversary is tomorrow (the 16th) so we'll observe that instead.

    1. We rarely do anything special either, and if we go out to dinner, it's usually not on the 14th. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. Great answers! Especially the one about love being blind. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't really remember Valentine's Day as a child.

    1. That question really made me think! I still need to visit all the Hodgepodgers so I'm interested to see what memories others might have - nothing stood out to me! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. I love your answers to the first two questions and couldn't agree more. Did we do anything special for Valentine's Day? Yes, I love Valentine's Day, it's one of my favorite holidays. We celebrated the weekend before with a weekend away doing lots of fun things one of them being a candlelight walk through a forest. Then we celebrated the day of with a nice steak dinner at home.

    1. That sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine's! We are hoping to visit the Monet Immersive Art exhibit in Cincinnati soon, and that is something I requested for Valentine's, even though it will be weeks later that we actually go! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
