Five Minute Friday - Spoil

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

A couple weeks ago the prompt was "waste" and I wrote about how frustrating it is when food is wasted because it was left too long and went bad. I thought about that and how this week's prompt is sort of a continuation of that idea. Spoiled food is wasted, as is the money or effort that was spent on it.

Food is spoiled when it's left too long, but it's actually the impurities in it that cause spoilage. Preservatives, canning, freezing, refrigerating, drying, and carefully sealed containers are all safeguards against bacteria and mold that would spoil our food. Why would we harvest from our gardens, buy groceries, prepare food in advance, and not take care to preserve it from spoiling? The food, our money, and all our effort would be wasted. So we can and freeze and preserve our produce. We check the "Best Before" dates on groceries and plan to use or freeze by that date. If we prepare a double batch of lasagna so we have a meal for a later date, we are careful to properly seal and refrigerate or freeze that second lasagna so it's still good when we need it. We don't leave bad apples or rotting potatoes with the good ones, because then they will all spoil.

Our time and efforts should go into things that will be worthwhile and last, and we shouldn't allow the impurities of the world to spoil what is meant for eternity.

Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
~John 6:26-27~

  1. Thanks for the reminder to value what God values as much as we value the food we work to prepare. Good reminder. Your FMF neighbour at #21 this week.
