A New Year of Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse or just general uselessness. Here are the words/phrases they'd like to see banished in 2024 -

hack, impact, at the end of the day, rizz, slay, iconic, cringe worthy, obsessed, side hustle, wait for it

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Are any of these a regular part of your speech? Is there a word not on the list that you'd like to add?

I don't know if any of them need to be banished completely, but I am pretty tired of the words "obsessed" and "slay". I'm thinking the word "hack" must be on the banishment list because of all the "life hack" posts on social media that are just dumb. Dumb things that are NOT actually life hacks at all, but things that even morons should be able to figure out, things that wouldn't even work at all, or things that are WAY more steps and trouble that the so-called problem. I could get behind banning all "life hack" posts, now that I think about it.

2. What do you wish you'd done more of last year? Less of

I wish I'd written more notes and letters. I wish I'd done more exercising. I wish I'd spent less money and done less worrying. I guess I know what to put on my list of goals for 2024 now!

3. A place you'd like to visit in this new year? Do you think you will?

I have a long list of places I'd like to visit, and I always have! Places that I MIGHT be able to visit this year include St Louis, Florida, and Alaska. I think I probably will get to St Louis at some point this year. I have a very dear friend who lives there and I'd love to go visit her. We might get to Florida in 2024. Just depends how vacation times fall and what else we want to do. I think it's very unlikely that I'll get to Alaska in 2024.

4. What are three words to sum up or describe your 2023?

This reminds me of one of those word search grids that tells you that the first three words you see will be your words for the year or something. So I will not overthink. Just the first three words that come to mind to describe 2023 . . .

Challenges

Trust

Contentment

5. What advice would you like to give yourself as we begin a new year?

Establish rhythms of work and rest and be diligent and patient. I want to be productive when I should be working and be content and at peace when I should be resting. These are things that don't come easily to me because I'm a procrastinator in a lot of areas of my life.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'm going to be going to full time hours at work soon, and in many ways I'm looking forward to it, but I'm also quite concerned about how I'll be able to manage my time when my workdays get a lot longer and my personal time will be evenings and weekends only. Thus the advice to myself!

A couple photos to share from our New Year's Day walk in the woods:

And a reminder that my Twenty-Six Lists link-up begins on Tuesday. Find out more about it here: Introducing Twenty-Six Lists. Our first list is Accomplishments (in 2023) and Goals (for 2024).

    1. I hope you enjoy it! I've been wanting to visit St Louis for such a long time, so my friend moving there just sealed the deal for me. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. I hope you get to visit all 3 places you mentioned, I'm a bit of a procrastinator too. Hope you have a great day!

    1. Procrastination is probably my biggest character flaw - something I'm always working on! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I want to write more letters this year too, something I've been thinking about. It is becoming a dying art but I have saved letters and they're a treasure. Sometimes I think I was much better organized and efficient at home when I worked full time and didn't have just an endless stretch of day to get things done. I often end up not accomplishing much and wasting time. Good luck with the transition back!

    1. I wonder too if I'll essentially be forced to be more efficient because the time I'll have to accomplish some of the tasks will be so limited. Thanks for the good wishes and for your kind comments!

  5. Those were great words for 2023. Writing letters is an encouraging goal. I hope your full time work goes smoothly and works well toward your other goals. I've noticed people who work full time are more organized with their spare time. Does that make sense.?

    1. That does make sense - I think when we have less time, we are almost forced to make better use of it. I hope I'll do better, but I expect it to be a learning process that might be frustrating to begin with ! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. Establish rhythms - exactly! Great advice. And rhythms that work for you.....not everyone I watch on Youtube - lol! I also wish I had exercised more (and quite a few other things related to my health) but it is a new year!!:)

  7. I agree with your answer for #2. I like your 3 words for 2023. I did my calendars. It's a lot of work. Enjoyed reading your answers and I love the photos your shared.

  8. I actually like the word hack if it truly is a hack that save me time or effort. I just learned what rizz meant so I don't really care about that one. I also think impact is still important when used correctly. It seems to fall into the same category as awesome (when I was teaching). I only use the word awesome if I'm truly in awe of something.

I hope you make it to all three places. I've given up on traveling. I don't like getting my hopes up only to have them dashed.

Your photos are, as always, gorgeous!

    1. I wouldn't mind the word hack if the life hacks were actual time and effort savers! Words do lose their *impact* when we overuse them and apply them too loosely. Like *unique* - that one bugs me because people use it for things that are NOT unique at all.

  9. Better late than never getting to commenting. Oh, yah, "life hack"...that could be why. It does tend to get overused. I want to send more notes and cards. I kind of miss that habit, though I probably don't do it because I'm not a fan of my hand writing. I'd love to visit Alaska. Oh, I LOVE those cardinals. I wish we had them here in Washington.

    1. I have a feeling I'm going to be late getting to the comments more often than not now that I'm working more hours. I barely had time to sit down yesterday! Thanks for stopping by and commenting - I appreciate your thoughts so much!
