Wednesday Hodgepodge - Cozy Thoughts

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. This week's Hodgepodge lands on National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. Is yours in need of a cleaning? Will you get that done today? How often do you tackle this particular chore?

I think there are a couple of containers of leftovers that should have been thrown out and haven't been yet, so yes, I suppose I will look after that today. Although I don't think it's in desperate need of a cleaning, it's probably a good idea for me to make sure there's nothing forgotten in a corner or drawer that shoudn't be there. I try to label containers so that I can keep track of what's in the fridge and keep it clean, but about once a month I make a point of double checking.

2. November 15th is also National Philanthropy Day . . . tell us about a charity (local or otherwise) you like to support when you're able.

Our local church is where most of our support goes, and I also regularly support RadioU. Some might question whether RadioU is a charity, but it's completely listener supported and is a ministry station, so that's good enough for me. For many years we've supported Operation Christmas Child, but this year the date got past me. In fact, we're not well-acquainted with any local charities yet, but smaller local charities are my preference to help others in my area and smaller organizations often spend more pennies out of my dollar to actually help people.

3. What in nature inspires you and why?

Goodness, what doesn't!? Mountains, waterfalls, the huge variety of flowers and birds and animals . . . All these inspire awe and wonder at the endless creativity of God. Most inspiring for me is the sky. I know that's a really broad answer, but there is something in the sky every single day that turns my thoughts to how awesome and faithful God is. The sun rises and sets every day, and it's wonderfully beautiful. A blue sky and a sky filled with clouds are both beautiful (especially on the prairies where the sky just looks bigger). I love the night skies too, because I'm always reminded that God put the moon and stars there to mark the seasons for us. I think about the purpose of the stars being primarily to make us look up in wonder and realize that God put them all in place, knows how many there are, and names each of them . . . and he's the same God that knows each detail about each of us and loves us.

And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so.
~Genesis 1:14-15~

He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines how many stars there are
and calls them all by name.
~Psalm 147:3-4~

4. What's something you own that makes you feel cozy?

Hmm, I associate anything flannel or quilted with coziness, and I do own quilts and quilted wall hangings that make me think cozy thoughts. Having the house decorated for Christmas makes me feel cozy too.

5. Who did you thank today? Who thanked you?

Well, I haven't really talked to anyone yet today, so yesterday . . . I know I said thank you at least a couple times at work for simple things like someone holding a door for me, and my manager said thank you when he came to pick up the deposit. My son and his family came over for dinner and there were quite a few expressions of thanks during the evening.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

On the weekend we went for a short walk at another Metro Park. This one is called Homestead, and it has this beautiful pavillion that we thought would be a lovely place for a family gathering or party. It was locked and obviously you need to reserve it, so we're wondering what that would cost.

Not many leaves left on the trees, and it's getting chillier. We're seeing some Christmas decorations and preparations around here. The season is almost upon us!

Do you have any cozy thoughts to share today? Leave a comment and let me know!

  2. I completely agree with you on the sky. My favorite thing in nature and always turns my heart toward the One who made it. I will be doing just a little bit of decorating this year as we are not having Christmas at home. Takes some of the pressure off. I'm going to put a few things out because I need it to feel like Christmas all month long.

  5. Oh yes, I find quilts so cozy too! I know most parks around us with pavilions like that only charge a nominal fee for parties as long as you promise to leave everything just like you found it.

  8. Cozy used to mean a roaring fire in the fireplace. But, we don't have a fireplace anymore. Right now, I'm cozy because my 26 pound dog thinks he's a lap dog so he's keeping me warm and cozy!

    1. We have a gas fireplace, and I feel like it's more about looks than warmth, but it does make me think cozy either way! How sweet that your dog is keeping you cozy! Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Lol! The frosted mini wheats picture made me laugh out loud! :D I love everything about nature, but my favorite is sunrise. I always think of sunrise as the wrapping paper around God's gift of a new day. :)
