One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.
'tis the season
in season

I've sometimes wondered why we only wish others "Seasons Greetings" during Christmas. And I suppose those would be Winter Greetings in the northern parts of the world and Summer Greetings in the southern hemisphere. Or maybe Rainy Season or Dry Season in parts of the world. When I think of it that way, Seasons Greetings don't make a lot of sense, or seem rather bland.
But the Bible tells us that―
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens . . .
~Ecclesiastes 3:1~
―so maybe it's not so strange to recognize or even celebrate the seasons in turn. Especially winter, since at first glance it doesn't seem to have much to recommend it except those fun holidays at the end of December! Most of us don't enjoy the cold weather, even if we appreciate the beauty of a fresh snowfall or participating in winter sports. We prefer to enjoy winter inside, perhaps sitting by the fireplace with a hot cup of our favorite beverage and a good book.
But that is the value of the winter season, I think. To rest and reflect, to enjoy and celebrate what we've worked for, and plan and anticipate the cycle beginning again. We gathered and celebrated abundance and provision during the harvest autumn season, which was only possible because we celebrated growth as we watered and pruned during the summer season, and that was only possible because we celebrated preparing the soil and planting during the spring season. (Well, I didn't do any of that gardening work myself, because I don't have any knack or interest in it, but I have some idea of how it works!) Each season brings its own joys and its own challenges, but all are necessary.
In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy. ~William Blake
To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring. ~George Santayana
I do enjoy watching all four seasons come and go, and I have a hard time saying which is my favorite season. My goal is to try and enjoy each one in turn, and know that just as some days and some seasons of life that are wonderful and exciting don't last forever, neither do the days and seasons that are difficult and full of sorrow. The seasons change, but my God does not, and he uses each season of life for my good.
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither―
whatever they do prospers.
~Psalm 1:1-3~

It was the best place to be, thought Wilbur, this warm delicious cellar, with the garrulous geese, the changing seasons, the heat of the sun, the passage of swallows, the nearness of rats, the sameness of sheep, the love of spiders, the smell of manure, and the glory of everything.
~E. B. White

This is a thought-provoking post, Kym. I often say, "Season's Greetings" as we live in a very diverse town. But, I never wondered where that saying came from and why we only use it in the winter. I do wonder if people in the Southern Hemisphere use it at Christmas. Like I said, very thought provoking!

I've always thought it a rather curious greeting, but I imagine it must have started as a sort of catch-all that would apply to whatever special days anyone was celebrating! Thanks for stopping by and pondering with me!
DeleteI often say Happy Holidays. Never thought about why we say season greetings. Interesting ponderings.
