I'm participating in the Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write. And as is my custom, I'm participating a bit late! The prompt for the past week was Weathered or Rustic, which made me think of all the wonderful old barns that can be seen in rural areas. Some have been maintained, repaired, restored so that they still stand strong despite the signs of aging. Others appear neglected and it's hard to believe they're still standing at all, given all the missing pieces or the angle at which they're leaning. I can think of several barns that I wish I'd thought to take a weekly or monthly photo to record their aging process. Anyway, that's enough reminiscing for now. I reminisced a little as I hunted up some photos from my archives showing weathered or rustic structures, and collected some quotes to accompany them.
The quiet rhythmic monotone of the wall of logs fills one with the rustic peace of a secluded nook in the woods. ~Gustav Stickley
There is virtue in country houses, in gardens and orchards, in fields, streams and groves, in rustic recreations and plain manners, that neither cities nor universities enjoy. ~Amos Bronson Alcott
I always sort of swooned at the sight of the classic barn structures in central and northern Minnesota, where everything seemed rustic and weathered and made to age gracefully. ~Richard Dean Anderson
The shed of leaves became a cascade of red and gold and after a time the trees stood skeletal against a sky of weathered tin. The land lay bled of its colors. The nights lengthened, went darker, brightened in their clustered stars. The chilled air smelled of wood smoke, of distances and passing time. Frost glimmered on the morning fields. Crows called across the pewter afternoons. ~James Carlos Blake
Nothing is more beautiful than the love that has weathered the storms of life. The love of the young for the young, that is the beginning of life. But the love of the old for the old, that is the beginning of things longer. ~Jerome K. Jerome
Is not wisdom found among the aged?
Does not long life bring understanding?
~Job 12:12~
You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the LORD.
~Leviticus 19:32~
The glory of the young is their strength;
the gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old.
~Proverbs 20:29~

This is such beautiful post. I love the pictures of the mills and bridges, and, of course, the barns. I wish I could write description like some of the quotes you found. This is my favorite, "The shed of leaves became a cascade of red and gold and after a time the trees stood skeletal against a sky of weathered tin. The land lay bled of its colors. The nights lengthened, went darker, brightened in their clustered stars. The chilled air smelled of wood smoke, of distances and passing time. Frost glimmered on the morning fields. Crows called across the pewter afternoons. ~James Carlos Blake" Isn't that fabulous writing? How do people even put words together like that? Words like "air smelling like distances and passing time," moves the plot along as well as gives a rustic feel. Your posts are a wealth, Kym. I hope you are doing some fiction writing.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved that descriptive passage as well, and I have no idea who James Carlos Blake is or what that quote might be excerpted from, but I'm going to try and find out. I don't write any fiction myself, even though I've taught a fiction writing class for high schoolers several times - I always intended to write the assignments with the students, but never got it done! Thanks for stopping by and for adding my post to the link list!
DeleteWhat a lovely collection of photographs, Kym. You found some lovely lines to go with them, too. :)
