WQ - Facing Danger

I'm participating in the Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write, a practice which might be considered dangerous, because I never really know what I'll do with the prompt I've been given. This week the prompt really is dangerous. I mean, that's the actual prompt, the word "dangerous".

I had no definite plan going into this, other than collecting some quotes I found interesting, and just go from there. So that's why this one is a good start. It's about planning and building a good team. Hillary mentions a possible dangerous situation almost in passing, but I got to thinking about his approach. It's not a matter of IF you'll wind up in a difficult or dangerous situation, it's a matter of WHEN. It's almost inevitable, so how will you handle it?

Good planning is important. I've also regarded a sense of humor as one of the most important things on a big expedition. When you're in a difficult or dangerous situation, or when you're depressed about the chances of success, someone who can make you laugh eases the tension. ~Edmund Hillary

It felt really dangerous to walk up to the edge of this
natural bridge, especially since there's no fence!

The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. ~Albert Einstein

When we come up against the evil in the world, will we face it courageously or run in fear? Are we willing to work and fight for something better, for justice, to protect or defend the innocent, and to do what is good and right? Or will we be weak or complacent, and pretend evil doesn't exist?

It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong. ~Thomas Sowell

The great Mr Sowell has such a way with words. And I think he's summed up one of the root problems in our government with this one. Which means it's up to the voters to hold our representatives accountable for what they do, since that's often the only real danger they face - the possibility of losing their elected position.

The truth is, there is no such thing as being completely safe. There's risk and danger in everything we do, to some extent. So we should not be foolish or fatalistic, but we've got to live our lives.

The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore. ~Vincent Van Gogh

Risk and reward. Our job is to find a balance and to be wise and brave.

A sensible person sees danger and takes cover,
but the inexperienced keep going and are punished.
~Proverbs 22:3~

Well, if that isn't a summary of every campy horror film, I don't know what is! That third unarmed teenager is really going to go into the haunted barn all by herself even after her friends' body parts have been tossed out the barn window? Foolish!

But seriously, when we see or sense danger, if we're wise, we take stock of the situation and weigh the options. Maybe we carry on with our original course of action, but are even more vigilant for the threats we may face, or maybe we slow down and are extra careful of every step. Or maybe we put the whole plan on pause and go a different, and less dangerous direction.

It is dangerous to have zeal without knowledge,
and the one who acts hastily makes poor choices.
~Proverbs 19:2~

Our definitions of dangerous situations may be different, and how we handle physical danger is different from how we respond to patterns of thinking that are dangerous to our emotional well-being, or social trends that might pose a danger. Being prepared often means being well-informed and able to think things through.

And having the right tools on hand!

I feel like I'm ready for any dangerous situation that might come my way, provided I have a hammer on me. ~Chris Hemsworth

Normally in dangerous situations I have a getaway car. ~Sacha Baron Cohen

So when we went to Glacier in 2013, my kids thought it was
funny to pose with all the warning signs, doing a sort of
football referee "no yards" motion. And it was funny.
Who knew the photos would come in handy 10 years later?!
Dad joined in the game - his specialty was the Enter and
Do Not Enter signs.
