One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

Not many things are reliable in this world. Death and taxes, as W.C. Fields pointed out, and those really aren't very pleasant things to think about. It's good to have a reliable car, reliable internet service, and a reliable way to communicate with others. When I'm driving, I often have to rely on my GPS because I don't know my way around the city well at all! It's really important to have a reliable source of income! And hopefully we have family and friends that we can rely on to be there for us and to keep their promises.
But no matter how faithful any of us are, we are still human, and things happen. We forget things we promised. We make mistakes. We run out of resources. We are thwarted by circumstances beyond our control. Sometimes we even change our minds or are thoughtless, or worse, we break our word out of anger or pride or our own hurt feelings.
It's tempting to think there really isn't anything or anyone we can rely on in this world and become jaded. Expecting only the worst from others and from life, and refusing to trust anyone. Maybe we decide we can only rely on ourselves. The old "if you want something done, you have to do it yourself" approach. Which isn't always a bad thing! After all, working hard and doing all you can to take of yourself and be prepared is a wise way to live!
You have to rely on your preparation. You got to really be passionate and try to prepare more than anyone else, and put yourself in a position to succeed, and when the moment comes you got to enjoy, relax, breathe and rely on your preparation so that you can perform and not be anxious or filled with doubt. ~Steve Nash
We should so work as if we were to be saved by our works; and so rely on Jesus Christ, as if we did no work. ~Francis Asbury
Because I cannot rely on myself, I rely on Him, twenty-four hours a day. ~Mother Teresa
There's a limit to how much we can rely on others or ourselves. But we can always rely on God and his promises. He will never fail. He will never leave us or forsake us.
You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.
~Psalm 59:17~
Teach me your way, LORD,
that I may rely on your faithfulness;
give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name.
~Psalm 86:11~
If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
~I John 4:15-16~

My humorous quote comes from Frank Zappa, who can always be relied upon for a completely unique take on things:

I would like to put something together for 'rely' as I have strong feelings about being reliable, even if I am not always completely reliable myself. Oh, how many times have I said, 'if I want something done (done right), I just need to do it myself.' Seems so few folks have a strong work ethic or take pride in doing things to the best of their ability. Even my husband laughingly says, 'good enough for government work.'
ReplyDeleteI don't know how reliable I am either, but I hope that my overall track record is a good one. You're right, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find people who have that strong work ethic and do their best. Thanks for stopping by and adding to the conversation!
DeleteWhen I was a special education teacher, my immediate supervisor told me, "If you tell someone you're going to do something, make sure you do it." I used those words almost like a mantra or motto and still do. I may goof up every once in a while, but I try to always follow through on something I've said I'll do.

That's really good advice and a good way to live. Keeping promises and being someone who can be relied on. Thanks for stopping by and sharing that!
DeleteKym, a giraffe filled with whipped cream - "This quote is often interpreted as a metaphor for the creative process in music, where sometimes the most unconventional ideas can be the most effective in conveying a message." ~AI Assistant :)
ReplyDeleteHuh, who knew. I sure didn't! LOL Thanks for stopping by and enlightening me!
DeleteLove your scripture references Kym. They help remind us that we do have One on whom we can always depend even when the world would tell us otherwise. Thank you for sharing them. Your #FMF neighbor, Cindy

DeleteI have no idea what Frank Zappa is talking about, but I do like the Francis Asbury quote. I just copied it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know either, but I thought it was so funny. And that Asbury quote is a good one. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
