Wednesday Hodgepodge - Food For Thought

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Hello August. What's one thing you're looking forward to this month?

I'm looking forward to our visit to Maryland to see the family. We're celebrating our granddaughter's first birthday. I miss them all so much and can hardly wait to see them again - and especially the sweet little birthday girl!

2. What are you doing to beat the heat right now? If you live in the southern hemisphere are you enjoying cooler temps or counting the days until summer?

My go-to plan to beat the heat is to enjoy the air-conditioning. We have been making use of the pool here, at least on weekends, which is also helpful to beat the heat. We do enjoy hiking, but try to choose trails in shady parks.

3. How do you see the world?

Hmm. It's a beautiful but broken place full of beautiful but broken people. So many amazing things to see and experience, interesting places to visit, and wonders of nature to explore and learn about. And then the fantastic buildings and inventions and other things that people have contributed to the world through the years. Yet, because of sin, people have been making messes of the world since the beginning as well; and even worse, our sin is what has been broken humankind as well, in worldwide problems like war and slavery to the very personal problems like broken relationships and hostility and greed. The good news is that God offers healing to each of us and promises a perfect world to us in eternity! Honestly, sometimes I need to remind myself of that to help me see the world and people through eyes of hope and compassion, because it's pretty easy to get disgusted with the state of world when following news and politics. (And I'm a politics junkie! I follow it like a sport, and I'm terribly skeptical about almost every player in the game, so I think that looking at it through a Biblical worldview and understanding of God's ultimate sovreignty is the only way to follow it and still be hopeful and joyful.)

4. What food product do you think is better store bought than homemade? How about something you refuse to buy because it is so much better homemade?

All of the food products I can think of that I prefer store-bought are for convenience sake, I think. Things like gravies and sauces, and cooking stock - I don't think the store-bought versions are necessarily better, but they're so much easier! There are some things that I won't buy prepackaged and processed, no matter how convenient they might be. The first one that comes to mind is alfredo sauce. I strongly prefer my homemade alfredo sauce to any jarred alfredo sauce and see no reason to buy it when it's actually so easy to make my own. For a long time I refused to buy most breads because I could make my own and it was almost always better, in my opinion.

5. Are you easy to get along with?

I think I am. I hope I am! I try to be easy to get along with.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

The question about beating the heat made me think of this meme that never fails to make me laugh, and this perfect quote from Jane Austen.

  1. I LOVE that meme! Also, Jane Austen's words are spot on -- when one is sweating profusely, it is hard to be elegant. Here in the south, I remember hearing older (now I'm the older!) ladies say, "Ladies don't sweat, they glisten." Well, let me tell you . . .this lady sweats hahaha!

    1. Haha! I've heard that saying as "ladies don't sweat, they glow" but I'm pretty sure that what I do is accurately described as sweating! And it's not elegant at all! thanks for stopping and sharing a laugh with me!

  3. I agree most things I buy 'ready made' are for convenience sake and not taste. I'm so glad you've got a trip to look forward to. Enjoy celebrating your granddaughter!

  6. Pretty sure I just snorted at your 'random.' Your response to #3 is really thoughtful; I seriously need to up my game where hope and compassion are concerned. My hubby is a politics junkie as well; our television's usually set to Newsmax but I find it all so wearying.

  7. It is so hard to be elegant when you are melting inside and out!!
Good answers. It definitely gives me peace to have a Biblical World view and to know who is in charge of the end of the story. Happy August to you!

  8. Happy first birthday to your granddaughter! And, I agree with you 100% on the air conditioning. I am so glad we are able to have it as so many around the world don't. As for politics, it's so demoralizing. I am old enough to remember when both sides of the aisle would at least try to work together. I pray for that kind of wisdom for the world's leaders every night.
