Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thoughts of the Merry Month of May

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What's something you 'may' do this month?

I may go to a Columbus Clippers baseball game. The Scioto Valley Chorus will be singing the anthem so I'm able to join them, that's the night I'll go.

The only other Columbus Clippers game
I've ever attended - in 2016 it was part of the
Summer of Landon baseball tour.
(We saw the Toledo Mud-Hens!)

If I'm part of the group singing the anthem,
I might be on the big screen! o.O

2. "All things seem possible in May" ~Edwin Way Teale. Do you agree? Elaborate. If not May, then in which month if any would you say all things seem possible?

Hmmm. I guess I agree, because springtime seems to encourage hope and optimism. It's the month of graduations, when we look forward to all the possibilities for the young people launching from high school and college.

3. April showers bring May flowers . . . is this true where you live? What's your favorite color of the rainbow? Your favorite May bloom? Do you enjoy visiting gardens? What's a 'famous' garden you'd like to visit?

Yes, by the end of April I hope for warmer weather and less rain, although so far May has been cold and rainy this year. My favorite color of the rainbow . . . indigo. I'm a fan of all things blue, it seems. Around here, the apple and cherry blossoms, the daffodils and tulips are pretty much finished, but it's time for a new round of flowers blooming. Lily-of-the-valley is the favorite that comes to mind, since it's the birth month flower and has long been a favorite of mine anyway. I think the blossoms of the hawthorn trees are beautiful as well.

I love visiting gardens, because I'm not a gardener myself but enjoy seeing and experiencing different kinds of gardens. I especially like conservatories so I loved that our daughter chose to do a garden and conservatory tour for the Summer of Kennady (we let our kids choose the family vacation destination for the summer following their high school graduation). I love Longwood Gardens and would like to visit there again. It's been decades since I saw Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C., and I'd like to go back. Of all the wonderful famous gardens around the world, the one I'd most like to visit is the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England.

4. Are you a fan of the Star Wars series of films? If so, how many have you seen? (I think there are 12) Are you a fan of the sci-fi genre in general, in either books or movies? What's your favorite sci-fi book or movie?

I'm a very low-key fan of the Star Wars films. Meaning that I was a fan back in the eighties and nineties, but really didn't keep up well after that. I know I saw the first one, A New Hope, on video a couple years after it came out. I don't remember whether I first saw The Empire Strikes Back in theater or on video, but I was still pretty young when it came out in 1980. But I saw The Return of the Jedi on its opening weekend in my city and it was very exciting! Except for Rogue One, which I saw in the theater, I've watched the others sort of piecemeal. Like I say, I didn't keep up. I don't read sci-fi, usually, but there are quite a few shows and movies in the genre that I really like. Star Trek and Quantum Leap, in particular. I'd say Star Trek: The Next Generation is my favorite sci-fi show.

5. Cinco de Mayo lands on Friday of this week . . . do you enjoy Mexican food? How often? Do you eat out or make your own? Your favorite thing to order in a Mexican restaurant? Have you ever been to Mexico?

In general, I enjoy Mexican food. Or what we think of as Mexican food in America anyway! I'm a picky eater and I also need to be cautious about spicy foods because of my GERD issues, but quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos, soft tacos . . . love them all. I can make my own but eating out is much better! There's a restaurant in Maryland that my friends and I visited often that's called Cinco de Mayo. Their margaritas are the best. Favorite menu items at Mexican restaurants are flautas, chimichangas, or enchiladas. I've never been to Mexico, and currently have no plans to visit.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Yesterday I made a meal plan for about two weeks worth of dinners, and even though my husband and I had talked about it in the morning, I completely forgot to plan something Mexican-inspired for Friday. Duh. I guess I'll have to switch a few things around because now I'm so hungry for flautas!

What makes the month of May merry for you? Leave a comment and let me know!

Simple Meal Planning - Plan to Eat

  1. A meal plan for two weeks sounds so good. Our daughter's go to at a Mexican restaurant is a Quesadilla. Hope you are able to sing the anthem with your group at that game! Fun! Happy May to you.

    1. I'm hoping the anthem night works out too - all depends on what time we'd have to be there, I think. Thanks for commenting!

  2. How could I forget Lily of the Valley? They are so beautiful and fragrant, and I love the biblical allusion as well.

I have a taco salad planned for Friday.

    1. Lily of the valley has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember. Had some in my wedding bouquet (although they were silk). Thanks for visiting and commenting!

    2. I hope your evening at the Columbus event works out. We are traveling this weekend, so will have to find a Mexican restaurant somewhere Friday night. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  3. How fun it would be to see yourself on the big screen! I hope it works out that you do! We have been to the gardens at Kew, and they are gorgeous! I hope to make it back someday. I'd love to go to Vancouver, though.

I agree with you on the whole Star Wars thing, but I'm really into Star Trek. We just finished the Picard series. I would also agree the Next Generation was the best iteration.

    1. My husband watched all of the Picard series, but I didn't see all of it. What I saw was great though! Thanks for visiting!

  4. Having a 2 week meal plan is very organised. We tend to be a bit more pot luck and no Mexican food planned here. Hope you get to sing at the game. Dropping in from the Hodgepodge

    1. usually I only plan one week at a time, and I'm not that consistent. I'm trying to train myself to plan and organize better! Thanks for visiting and commenting!

  5. You're the second blogger I know of who does meal plans. I'd like to try, but my husband is a total spur-of-the-moment sort; too old to change our spots. We're trying a new (to us) Mexican place tomorrow to avoid the crowds on Friday.

  7. Yep, I'm an indigo/blue person too and that makes blue hydrangeas a real favorite of mine (though I'm not picky and love most flowers). I was just asking my husband last night if I should swap out Friday's menu item for something more Mexican inspired.. but I'm not 100% sure I want to go back to the store to make that happen.

    1. Blue is my definitely my favorite color for hydrangeas. I'm in the same place with tomorrow's menu - worth going to the store to change, or not? Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I enjoyed your answers. I love lily of the valley. They remind me of my grandma. I always forget to make something for certain days like Cinco de Mayo.

  9. The game sound like a fun time. I love Lily of the Valley but seldom see the anywhere. Yes please, I would like a margarita and a cheese enchilada. I've never made meal plans. May is our daughters birthday!
