Wednesday Hodgepodge - Seasonal Thoughts

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. April 13th is National Scrabble Day . . . are you a fan? Do you enjoy word games in general? What's an eight letter word that tells us something about your life currently?

I love Scrabble! It's one of my favorite games, but I don't often get to play. Whenever my mom and dad visit, we play most evenings and we finally got to do that again in October. I enjoy all kind of word games, but mostly stick to the ones I can do by myself, like Wordle and all the related ones that have sprung up from it.

Although TROUBLED is an eight-letter word, it's probably not the word that best describes my life! This was my mom's game-changing and winning word from a game we played in October.

My eight-letter word to describe life . . . hmmm . . . How about: REINVENT. I feel like that's a large part of what I've been doing over the past few months. Making a rental townhouse feel homey. Figuring out how to be an empty nester. Deciding what I might want to do with my time and what kind of work I might want to do (Struggling to get enough motivation and courage to take next steps though!). Exploring new surroundings. Looking for ways to socialize, make friends and connections, and find purpose in my new empty nest life.

2. Do you have a junk drawer? Is it full? Do you know what's in it? What's in it?

Guess what?! I don't have a junk drawer at this house! By design! Which, sadly, does not mean there's no junk that would otherwise be in said drawer. So any junk I have here resides in other places, but hopefully in places more suitable, and I'm far less likely to accumulate junk if there's no catchall for it. Score!!

That said, there is a formidable junk drawer at the house in Maryland, which I suspect is still quite full, unless the kids have tossed everything that was in it in the trash or in a box for me to deal with. Dealing with junk is one of the things I hope to get done when I go home for a visit next week. The drawer I'm thinking of contains mostly takeout menus and coupon flyers and the like. Coupons long expired, of course.

3. When does time pass quickly for you? When does it pass slowly?

Time seems to pass quickly whenever I'm engrossed in some task. Blogging, grading or working on lesson plans (I don't do as much of that any more), sorting and organizing almost anything at my desk . . . Those are the times when I'll tell myself that I can finish in just a couple more minutes, and the next thing I know an hour or two has gone by!

Time passes ever so slowly when I'm lying in bed and having trouble falling asleep or going back to sleep. Ugh.

4. These eight vegetables are in season during spring - asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, collard greens, garlic, herbs. What's your favorite? Any on the list you refuse to eat? Last one on the list you ate?

Of those eight, carrots are far and away my favorite. Although herbs is a very broad category, and there are so many herbs that are wonderful. And how could we live without garlic to flavor almost everything? Cabbage is the one on the list that I will not eat in any form if I can help it. Broccoli and asparagus aren't favorites, but I can tolerate them. I don't eat raw celery but it's a good flavor added to soups. I'm not sure I've ever had collard greens. Last one on the list I ate was carrots, of course, although I used plenty of garlic and some herbs in the meals I prepped yesterday. Asparagus is on the menu for tomorrow.

5. What's the oldest thing you own? Tell us about it.

The oldest thing I own that is in this house could be my cedar chest. It was my high school graduation present from my family. I also brought some handmade quilts with me, one of which was made around the year 2005 or so, but the fabric is from flour sacks that my grandma collected during the 1930s and 1940s.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We just had such a great holiday weekend with the kids! Spencer, Landon and Meaghan, and granddaughter Aubrey came from Maryland for a visit, and Harrison and Angela and granddaughter Veronica spent Sunday with all of us. Later this month I'm going to Maryland for a visit, so that's when I'll see Kennady again. And I know there will be another visit to Maryland in May (for Kennady's baccalaureate!) and sometime in June or July, plus Kennady and Dan will be making a trip here in June. Time with family is the best, and having those times to look forward to helps cheer me up when I'm bored and lonely!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
~Romans 15:13~

What are you looking forward to this spring? Or hoping for? Leave a comment and let me know!

  2. Another Wordler ... yeay! I was trying unsuccessfully to explain it to my son; oh, the giggles! Love me some fresh veggies, yet I've a dickens of a time trying to fix carrots in the InstantPot without them coming out like little bricks. Oh well, a little garlic improves just about everything!

    1. Seems there were quite a few Wordlers in the Hodgepodge this week! It's hard for someone who doesn't enjoy it to understand why we love it so! Thanks for visiting!

  3. I enjoyed reading your Hodge Podge answers. I play Wordle every day too. Some days it makes my brain hurt! Your quilts are beautiful. My grandmother was an accomplished quilter. She sewed every stitch by hand, which amazes me! Enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. Thank you! My grandmother was a quilter, and my aunts and mom keep up the tradition. I know how, but haven't done anything in years!

  5. Sounds like you have a lot to look forward to with visits with family. You have some amazing quilts! Lovely. Hope Chests were the thing once. We have my mother-in-laws still with her handmade quilt in it along with other stuff. Hope the rest of your week goes well.

    1. How fun to have flour sack shorts! I know my aunts, and I assume my mom, had dresses made from flour sacks, and they all had aprons from them. Thanks for visiting and reminiscing with me!

  7. We rarely play scrabble but I LOVE playing Word with Friends and always have a few games going with my mom and mother in law. We don't have a junk drawer either. I don't know that I've ever eaten collard greens but I love all those other vegetables on the list.

    1. Those of us without a junk drawer are definitely in a minority! I've since realized that my bedside table may qualify as a junk drawer because I'm not quite sure what all is in it! Thanks for visiting!
