One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.
own it
in your own words
on your own
********************
We all want to make it on our own. Or we think that's what we want. Young people look forward to being out on their own, not needing their parents' permission to do what they want. Having our own car, our own place. Doing things our own way.
Sadly, it doesn't always turn out well when we insist on doing it our own way. We might do just fine getting a job and a house and a car, but if we're honest we did need help along the way. Someone hired you or gave you a chance, someone gave you the loan you needed or the lucky break that made it all possible. We really can't do it completely on our own.
And when we try to manage our lives on our own, make big decisions and direct our lives using our own ideas and thinking, it often turns out badly. When we go our own way and do whatever we want, chances are we'll mess up. Being wise in our own eyes, or relying on our own knowledge or personal desires has been getting humans in trouble since Adam and Eve. They trusted their own assessment of a tasty-looking fruit rather than trusting God's instructions.
And even though it's our own fault, Jesus took the punishment that should have been ours.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
~Isaiah 53:6~
A person may think their own ways are right, but the LORD weighs the heart.
To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
~Proverbs 21:2-3~
Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own understanding;
in all your ways know him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Don't be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
~Proverbs 3:5-7~
But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.
May these words of my mouth
and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
~Psalm 19:12-14~

I really want to give away
ReplyDeletethe stuff I always thought my own,
the canned lines in a stupid play,
the humour that was really bone.
I really hope that it's forgotten,
those days that I lived out loud,
but that were so misbegotten,
times of which I am not proud.
Not crawling in a hole, you see,
'cause I believe that there is hope,
but in blessed anonymity,
I think I can far better cope
with a far more modest mien,
a faceless extra in the scene.
It's true, often we're proud of what we've accomplished in our own, forgetting the many supports we had along the way!
