10 on the 10th - Phone Talk

On the 10th of each month, Marsha In the Middle asks ten questions for us to answer. And I suppose we can give just a short answer or elaborate a bit! This month's questions are all about phones.

What kind of phone did you have when you were a kid . . . landline or cell phone?
We had a landline. Cell phones weren't even a thing until I was in my late teens, and even then they were pretty rare.

Do you remember party lines?
I sure do! Some of my relatives that lived in rural areas had party lines, and it was quite the source of wonder to me as a kid. I wondered how people resisted the temptation to eavesdrop!

What was your first cell phone?
It was a really basic Tracfone that was given to me by a friend. She wasn't using it any more and thought it would be helpful for us when we were traveling.

Do you still have a landline?
Not any more! We got rid of our landline several years ago, but kept the number for a VOIP phone until a few months ago when we moved.

Do you screen your phone calls?
Sort of. I always look at the caller ID and rarely pick up if it's not a number I recognize or call I'm expecting. If I'm unsure, I let it go to voicemail.

What is the longest amount of time you've spent on the phone?
A couple of hours at a time, I think. When I was a teenager and young adult, I could spend a long time on the phone, but I was limited by the fact that other people might need the phone (this was before we had voicemail or even an answering machine!) and the cost of long distance calls. Nowadays, I can easily spend two hours on the phone with my mom or with my friend who calls me weekly for our "virtual coffee break". I can talk for a long time with my daughter too.

The aforementioned daughter liked posing with "old time" telephones!

What is your current phone?
I have a Samsung S22 Ultra.

Do you use your smartphone only as a phone?
Of course not! I use it for texting, messaging, and email. I use the camera a lot. It's my alarm clock and timer, and my calculator. I'd be lost without my GPS! I listen to podcasts and browse the internet, and regularly use apps to learn a language, identify birds, track my fitness, do my banking, and so much more.

When you were a kid, did you play "Telephone"?
Yes, I remember playing at school and also at youth group when I was a little older.

Does your significant other have a special ringtone?
No, right now no one has a special ringtone. It was something I meant to do when I got this phone but that was about a year ago and I still haven't done it!

That was fun! Now I need to call my mom! See you in the morning when I publish this!

  1. So fun! I love that photo of your daughter with the “old time” phone! I remember always having to carry coins for the pay phone in case of an emergency. And we were glad that we did because it was the only way to call anyone when you were away from home! Fun answers!

  2. I keep meaning to set special ringtones for everyone in the family too but rarely think to sit down and do that.
