Coffee Break Reading List - March 2023

Most of the time, I'm a reader and listener rather than a watcher. I like to read, and I like to listen to music and podcasts, but I don't watch a lot of movies, TV, or video. So I want to start off by highlighting a couple of movies that are coming out soon that I am actually very interested in seeing, and I'll invite you to keep reading because more info and the trailers for these are linked below and I hope you'll check them out. But yeah, movies are something different so I'm mentioning them up front! They are The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli and His Only Son.

Once again, here's the background on the Coffee Break Reading List. On my original blog, Homeschool Coffee Break, I started doing an occasional round-up of some of the stuff around the internet that I'd found interesting and worth passing along. Since it was a blog mostly about homeschooling, I tried to make sure I was including articles of particular interest to home educators, but when I was no longer homeschooling my own kids, it got a little harder to keep ahead of homeschool topics, and eventually the Coffee Break Reading List was retired. I've brought it back in this space, but not with the homeschooling focus. Just some interesting and fun things that I hope others will find interesting and fun as well.

Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:

Saver~Day 24~Write 28 Day Challenge at My Sea of Thought - There were so many wonderful articles shared by so many lovely bloggers during the recent Write 28 Day Challenge that it was almost impossible to choose only one to share here! I shared many, many of those articles during the challenge! This one happened to make it to my personal article-saver list because it was a very timely reminder to me of unintended consequences of saving too many things. Or maybe of losing sight of why I'm saving what I do.

There were also a LOT of articles and videos and opinions everywhere about what was happening at Asbury University. I didn't want to get caught up in the semantics of whether it could correctly be termed a 'revival' or if that was not the right word to use. I was more interested in what the fruit would be. Were people getting deeper in their faith? Were lives being changed and are lives continuing to change? Was God glorified? That last question was the most important to me. Again, although there were a lot of things I could have shared, this article at Christianity Today stood out because it focused on how the Asbury leadership tried to keep their own names and egos out of the way: 'No Celebrities Except Jesus': How Asbury Protected the Revival

The Dirt on Pig-Pen by Elif Batumen on Astra - I saved this article a little while ago. It's an exploration of how this Peanuts character has changed over the years, and some of the social commentary that can be seen in the development and antics of this messy little boy.

Quotable  (I enjoy hunting up little quotes to add to my Five Minute Friday posts, and have started to amass a collection that are begging to be shared somewhere):

Style comes in all shapes and sizes. Therefore, the bigger you are, the more style you have.
~Miss Piggy

Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
~Robert Breault

A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.
~Greek Proverb

Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:

*************************

Something I watched during coffee break:

The beautiful trailer for The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli: World-class musical performances with intimate conversations across the awe-inspiring Italian countryside are featured in this special theatrical event opening on Palm Sunday and continuing through Holy Week: April 2, 3, 4 & 6. Get your tickets at TheJourney.movie#TheJourneyTBNMIN Find out more in my feature post on Just A Second: Coming Soon - The Journey

And this trailer for His Only Son, which is an upcoming movie from the studio that brought us The Chosen (and I'm way behind in watching those episodes, but I really enjoy that series and how it's made me think). This movie is about Abraham and Isaac―and God's command for Abraham to sacrifice this beloved son. Get tickets for this one at: HisOnlySonMovie.com. #HisOnlySonMIN I'll be doing a feature on this on Just A Second as well: Coming Soon - His Only Son

What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:

In The Shelter Of Hollythorne House by Sarah E. Ladd - A young widow seeking to protect her infant son and his inheritance reconnects with her first love, who happens to be a watchman tasked with guarding them.

A Perilous Perspective by Anna Lee Huber - Just barely started on this latest Lady Darby mystery, which has been on my TBR for a very long time!

This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel J. Levitin - Another one I just started. The title of this non-fiction book is pretty self-explanatory! We'll see how much time I'm willing to devote to this fairly dense work. I may skim parts of it.

On my reading pile for upcoming coffee breaks:

Murder Most Fair by Anna Lee Huber - another one that's been on my list and bedside table for a long time. Hopefully very soon!
Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn - Just purchased this one and am excited about getting into it, as it looks a little different from the Lady Julia and Veronica Speedwell series that I love.
Radio's Greatest of All Time by Rush Limbaugh with Kathryn Adams Limbaugh and David Limbaugh - This is part biography and part coffee table book, I think. I was a huge Rush fan, but just recently purchased this book that is a tribute to him and his work.

Find out more at my book blog Just A Second.
