Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thoughts on Beautiful Things

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Pantone's color of the year for 2023 is Viva Magenta. Etsy's color(s) of the year are indigo and honeycomb. Your thoughts? Would we find any of these three shades in your home or wardrobe? Is there a room in your house that needs painting this year? Will you do it yourself or hire out?

Honestly, I've always wondered how and why these colors of the year are chosen. Not that it matters. Viva Magenta is a deep vibrant pink, but as I'm not a fan of pink, I don't think you'd find that color anywhere in my house or my belongings. The deep blue of indigo is more my preference! I have a lot of things in blue. I do like the honeycomb color too, even though I've never been interested in decorating with any shades of yellow and I certainly don't wear yellow! But there's lots of blue in my closet.

When we moved here I got a chance to start over a little bit in decorating in a couple of the rooms. One of those is the master bath, and I decided I wanted something cheerful and colorful, so I could get mix-y match-y with the towels. This is more navy than indigo, but maybe the yellow is sort of like honeycomb? I surprised myself with how much I like it. I think the shower curtain is beautiful. Cheerful, just like I wanted.

But we're renting so we won't be painting any of these rooms. I'm stuck with the light cafe au lait color. At least it's not off white. Gah. That would be horrible for me.

2. Something you had to do recently that could be described 'as exciting as watching paint dry'?

I guess it's a good thing if I can't think of having to do something that boring for that long? I've had to make a couple of phone calls that left me on hold for a long time, and that is awful. Even if I have the phone on speaker so I have my hands free to do something else, the things I can really do while on hold are limited. Now that I think about it, I have to make one of those kinds of phone calls today. Ugh. Sigh.

3. Who would you most like to sit beside on a 10-hour flight? Tell us why? Have you ever taken a 10-hour flight?

I think my first choice for a seatmate would have to be my husband. Or my daughter. I would hope that if I was on a plane for 10 hours it would be a family trip to a fun destination! I have two really good friends who would be wonderful to have sitting beside me on the plane as well, because I think we could probably talk the entire time and the time would pass very quickly. I've never been on a flight that long. I think about five hours would be the longest flight. I've spent a 10-hour day traveling, but that includes the time in layovers.

4. What's something you did growing up that would get you into trouble?

There's so much! The usuals - fighting with my siblings, failing to do my chores or keep my room clean. The one thing I remember doing constantly as a child that I thought would get me into trouble was staying up way past my bedtime reading. I was one of those kids that read under the covers with a flashlight and considered it worth risking whatever painful punishment would be inflicted upon me if I was ever caught. Either I didn't get caught, or - much more likely! - it was something my parents chose not to discipline me over. The worst that ever happened was a mild reprimand to get to sleep and a warning that it wasn't good for my eyes to read like that.

5. According to Google the top searches in 2022 were- Wordle, election results, Betty White, Queen Elizabeth, Bob Saget, Ukraine, Mega Millions, Powerball numbers, Anne Heche, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Hmmmm . . . what does this say about us? How many of these words did you search last year? What would you guess was your most 'googled' word/phrase/question?

So we care about celebrities and easy money, I guess. Not surprising, I suppose. I did Google information about Betty White and Queen Elizabeth in the past year but I don't think I searched the rest of those. However, I have Wordle bookmarked and just went straight to the lottery websites to check if I had the winning numbers! Clearly I did not. haha.

I'm pretty sure my most googled phrase would be "quotes about . . . " because I like to include a couple of interesting or humorous quotes in my weekly Five Minute Friday posts. Other than that I google recipes a lot, and I google trivia type things. For instance, on Sunday I googled "songs by Rihanna" and "M&M's SuperBowl ad".

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I've been working on the Write 28 Days blogging challenge this month, and while there is a one-word prompt for each day, I haven't always used it. But since today's word is 'beautiful' and my thoughts turned to colors using them to make my home beautiful, I thought I might tie in my random thought to beautiful things . . . and searching for them, because I mentioned that I googled quotes each week. So I did that.

By wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
with rare and beautiful treasures.
~Proverbs 24:3-4~

The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you. ~B.B. King

That reminded me of one of the art posters we have (that is blue, maybe even indigo!) that I put into a frame yesterday. I'm thinking I will hang it in the dining room. (Forgive my reflection in it - there's no other way to photograph it!)

There's a caption on it that references Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Wisdom, learning, seeing the goodness of God - that's how we find and appreciate all the beautiful things of the world, and there's more beauty than just the things we look at.

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God's handwriting. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. ~Helen Keller

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. ~Camille Pissarro

Things are beautiful if you love them. ~Jean Anouilh

What is beautiful to you? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. I love your shower curtain. I need to update bedding in one of my guest rooms and think I'll change out the bathroom attached there too. A refresh is good from time to time. Have a great day!

  2. I understand your parents never disciplined you for reading under the covers. My parents were very lenient with me on getting to sleep on time too, even though what I did when I couldn't sleep was listen to the radio (with headphones on). My father said he could relate to being a night person and he probably realized that tossing and turning in bed wasn't helping me fall asleep any more than was listening to the radio.

I love your tying this hodgepodge in with #write28days. I didn't join the challenge after all, but love it too. I love colors, particularly shades of blue, green and purple, even though I'm totally blind now.

Good luck on your boring phone call!

  3. Fun shower curtain and what a cool painting for that caption. Being put on hold is a good answer for the waiting for paint to dry question. Good thing we have the speaker option. Hope the rest of your week goes well!

  4. Completely understand your boring phone call. I had the same experience a couple of weeks ago and after being on hold which seemed like forever, talking into a pre-message recording, I was finally able to talk to an agent.

  5. Your shower curtain and towels are lovely and cheery. I tend to be big on the blue tones too but have started adding a few pops of the bright pink into my wardrobe. I can't ever imagine being on a plane for 10 hours.. I was getting antsy on our 5 hour flight to Las Vegas and it's a huge reason why I keep putting off planning our family trip to Hawaii.

  6. Enjoyed reading your answers and I like the photos you shared. I never like making phone calls but I had to make one today. My husband falls asleep before a plane ever takes off. I can't seem to sleep on a plane or in the car. The 10 hour flight to London was hard for me. That bedtime reading is cute. I like having the option to Google. Love your random.

  7. I've often wondered how they choose "____of the year", or trends. Sometimes I think people are up in the "office" saying "let's see what we can get people to wear this year"...haha. I probably should google the half time commercials since I missed all but the Tubi one that had everyone freaking out, including us. I enjoyed your thoughts on the write 28 days.
