Scripture and a Snapshot - Safety

Answer me when I call to you,
my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, LORD,
make me dwell in safety.

~Psalm 4:1, 8~

*************************

I really have little concept of what it's like to be in danger. I haven't been in a place where there is a war going on around me. I haven't faced an imminent threat to my life. I think the fears and worries I deal with are nothing compared to those who face these terrors each day.

Our ideas of what it means to be safe differ, but we all desire safety and security. For ourselves and for our loved ones. And on some level, we all have lain awake at night fearing something. Like the psalmist, we want an answer to our pleas, we need relief from the anxiety that consumes us, we need some peace so we can rest and sleep.

When we are worried or fearful, we can still put our hope in the Lord. Even though we're not promised an easy life, or that nothing will ever scare us or hurt us, we are promised his peace and presence. Knowing that he is with us always means knowing that we are safe, whatever comes.

*************************

How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.
In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues;
you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.
Praise be to the LORD, for he showed me the wonders of his love
when I was in a city under siege.
In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!"
Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.
Love the LORD, all his faithful people!
The LORD preserves those who are true to him,
but the proud he pays back in full.
Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the LORD.

~Psalm 31:19-24~

  1. "Give me relief from my distress." Distress = anything that brings hardship, pain, stress, difficulty. It can be different for each of us. I am so grateful that He is the One who brings us relief when we call on HIm.

  2. I love that picture! You're right, we all fear something. It helped me to realize that God might not keep the thing I fear from me, but He will always be with me, whatever He gives me to face, and help me to deal with it.

  3. I love the psalms that talk about God's protection and safety. It may not be "safety" as the world sees it but it gives me peace and hope.

  4. In a recent rollover crash, I had the blessing of feeling safe despite the violence of crunching metal and breaking glass. That’s peace! We all walked away unhurt (a few tiny scratches).

  5. What a perfect snapshot for "safety!" That bunny is so cute. I have often been so thankful that we don't live where there is war or have never stumbled upon any apex predators while out hiking in the woods.
