Wednesday Hodgepodge - Life of the Party

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  Are you more life of the party or more party pooper? If your answer is somewhere in the middle, which side of the middle do you lean towards more?

Birthday party, beach party, cocktail party, dinner party, charity/fundraiser, surprise party, costume party, garden party, Christmas party, reunion . . .what's your favorite kind of party?

I'm not totally the life of the party, but I lean towards that side, and how far I'm leaning depends on the type of party and how well I know others there. I think I'd describe myself as a reserved extrovert so I won't grab the mic and dominate at karaoke or start a conga line, but I'm happy to meet and talk to people, tell stories around the table, play games, etc.

I guess dinner parties would be my favorite from the list, because a celebratory dinner could be for any number of occasions, and could be indoors or outdoors, casual or dressy. Getting together with folks and sharing a meal is one of the best ways to build friendships and community.

2. Cheese, wine, and balsamic vinegar all improve with age. What would you personally add to the list?

Good relationships usually improve with age. There aren't guarantees, but a good marriage builds strength with each weathered storm, shared joy, and renewed commitment. Good friendships get better as you add memories and shared experiences and get to know each other better.

 3. How do you feel about your birthday? How do you want to be celebrated? Or don't you?

I look forward to my birthday every year and enjoy the day, but I keep it low-key. My birthday is right after Christmas so the best part is that usually my family is all around. But the downside to my birthday is that it's a lot all at the same time - kind of jammed in with all the holiday things. I do like to be celebrated by spending time with my family and some friends if possible, so dinner out and eating whatever dessert I want to is usually enough party for me. If it works out that I can go out with a couple of friends at some point as well, that's a bonus.

The plate says "Cherish the Moments" although of course it's
a good idea to cherish Mom as well.

4. What remarkable feat, interesting piece of trivia, or historical event occurred on your birth day and month? Not necessarily your same birth year, just the same date/month.

An internet search turned up these tidbits:

  • ether first used in childbirth - Jefferson, GA in 1845 (so it wasn't for my birth haha)
  •  in 1903 the song "Sweet Adeline" by Richard Husch Gerard and Harry Armstrong was first sung. As you might guess by the name, it was a barbershop quartet favorite, and inspired the name of the women's barbershop organization founded in 1945, Sweet Adelines International

And as you might also guess, I found that particularly fun since I'm now a member of a Sweet Adeline chorus myself. Scioto Valley Chorus won the Regional Championship in March and we are currently preparing for our fall show, "Dare To Believe", coming up on October 5th. If you're in the Columbus area, you are cordially invited to come hear us and say hello!

5.  Share two good things about your life right now.

I think my chorus and my church are two really good things in my life these days. I mean, there are so many good things that it's hard to decide how to name just two, or name two that are broad enough to include lots of aspects of goodness. Being in the chorus is a good thing because it's so much fun and so rewarding in many ways. Our church family is great and I feel like we are contributing positively there and we belong.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

The weather has been keeping us guessing lately! We were starting to get those brisk foggy mornings and hints of autumn, even some rain, and now this week the temperatures are back in the mid 80s. I'm kind of disappointed that we didn't make use of the pool the last weekend it was open, but it wasn't all that hot then. Now you could make a case for it being pool weather, but the pool is closed. Believe me, I'm not complaining, it's just amusing. Probably happens every year, but if it wasn't for the weather, what would we talk about?

We're talking about "Making and Keeping Promises" in the current Wednesday Quotes link-up which you can find here: WQ - Keeping Promises. Stop by and share a few thoughts and quotes! The current Everyday Images photo link-up is open until next week.

What kind of party is your favorite? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. Congratulations to your chorus group! I'm similar to you when it comes to parties. And also grateful for a long marriage. We were wishing we'd brought swim suits to my daughter's house so we could have taken the kids swimming, but when we left home it was very fall like temps so we didn't think we'd want to swim. It got warm though and we have plans to meet friends here for a float this weekend as it's going to be near 90. Have a great day!

  3. I love your answer for #1. I feel the same about parties, not being the life and soul of one but I do like to join in and keep things going.
What interesting facts about your birthday! Good luck with the fall show!
The weather is keeping us guessing here too! This morning was cold and wet and this afternoon is so warm and the coats my family took out with them are definitely not needed.

  5. I’m too tired to be the life of the party but I don’t mind sitting back and enjoying others.
That’s good you belong to a chorus group. Excercising your gift from God.
