I'm having trouble remembering one specific thing that stands out as a childhood favorite summer activity. Pretty much every summer we had a family vacation to visit my grandparents and aunts and that was a highlight, especially the times I got to stay with them for an extra week or two by myself. I also really enjoyed going to camp, though I think I only went twice to kids' camp. I remember going to family camp and on camping trips though. These days I think what I like best about summer is grilling because it's always good to share meal prep. A summer vacation is still the big highlight of the season, but it's only a week or weekend at a time instead of a couple months of vacation like it is for a kid.
Our anniversary is at the beginning of August. It's not a milestone anniversary this year, but it happens to fall on the weekend we've chosen for our family vacation meet-up in Deep Creek, Maryland. Hubby and I are planning to take an extra day for ourselves and visit Fallingwater and Polymath Park.
3. Summer tastes like? Smells like? Sounds like?
Summer tastes like lemonade or ice cream. It smells like the coconut scent of suntan lotion or sunscreen. And it sounds like birdsong and the faint buzz of insects and the neighbor mowing his grass.
The last thing I'd consider a splurge was when we went to Westcott House a couple weeks ago and I couldn't resist this beautiful little china tray, even though we'd already agreed on the candleholder in a Frank Lloyd Wright design very like lamps we have. So we got both.
I don't think I'll splurge on anything today though, unless I place an Amazon order this evening. Which is quite possible, but I don't think I have anything "splurgey" I'm intending to buy at the moment. Is it a splurge to pay my credit card statement? Because I'm doing that today.
5. Share a favorite summer quote, saying, song lyric, or meme.
I'm doing the meme first, because this is one of my favorites and always makes me laugh:

This week is shaping up to be one with not much sleep or downtime. Monday was a full day for me, as usual, with work and chorus rehearsal. On Tuesday we met friends for dinner so were out in the evening, and then our son brought his dog over because we're dog-sitting for almost a week while they're on vacation. So that's an extra responsibility for us this week. Today and tomorrow we also have to leave for work together and extra early because our cars are going into the shop, mine today and hubby's tomorrow. His is just getting an oil change, but they're running a diagnostic on mine and I suspect the result will just cement our decision that it's time to trade it in on something else. We do have a church dinner and service project this evening, but I think Thursday and Friday evenings are free. I am going to a Sweet Adelines regional event on Saturday so that will be a long day as I'm driving down just for the day. I have a feeling I'll need a very long nap on Sunday!!
What are some tastes or sounds or songs that say summer to you? Leave a comment and let me know!
Hi, I am a Bryan Adam's fan... Summer of 69 is a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteI like what you splurged on.
xx oo
Carla
I like most of Bryan Adams' music and that song was always a favorite too. Thanks for stopping by and complimenting my splurge!
DeleteThe candle holder is stunning!
ReplyDeleteThank you - I love FLW designs!
DeleteBeautiful candle holder! Under the Boardwalk is such a classic summer song. One of my favorite tastes of summer is strawberry shortcake made with freshly picked strawberries!
ReplyDeleteMmmm yes, strawberry shortcake is a very summery taste! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteGotta love Summer of 69. Have fun dog sitting!
ReplyDeleteI feel bad that we're not home during the day but we're doing our best to interact with the dog when we are home. If you lived closer, I'd bring her over to you! LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteYour summers as a kid sound wonderful, how great to stay an extra week or two by yourself.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your husband have a fan anniversary, how lovely to spend time with family.
That china tray is so pretty!
hahaha! That Snoop Dog meme did make me chuckle!
It sounds like you have had a really busy week!
Even though I don't remember many specific things, I really did have wonderful childhood summers. Glad you enjoyed the Snoop Dogg meme with me. LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteLove the Austen quote! I identify with that. You are really busy these days! How nice to have a family vacay on the calendar. I really like that candle holder. Enjoy the last days of Spring!
ReplyDeleteEver since reading that quote, I've tried to think of myself as being in a state of inelegance instead of hot and sweaty. haha It kind of works!! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI love that lantern! I say every anniversary is a milestone so enjoy celebrating : )
ReplyDeleteThat's true - milestones even if it's not a multiple of 5! LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI love your "splurge" purchases! Your meme made me chuckle! I used freshly cut grass as my smell, but I didn't even think of the lawnmower as a sound - good one! I have heard several this morning!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad we splurged on those little knick knacks as well. I haven't heard mowers yet, but I guess I'm not home when they do the lawns here. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI like your meme and Summer of '69 is a good song! I only went away to church camp once or maybe twice. It was not pushed hard in the church I attended and I don't have many memories of it. I like your answer to question to question 3 and agree with you on everything :).
ReplyDeleteThat meme always cracks me up. Well, Snoop almost always makes me laugh! Kids camp wasn't pushed much but teen camp was. I enjoyed both but teen camp was far superior IMO. Thanks for stopping by and commenting - and agreeing with me! I appreciate that! LOL
DeleteI keep trying to think of what summer smelled like as a child. I'd have to say dirt because my grandparent planted a huge garden, and we were always weeding it. But, then the smell of dirt would be replaced by the smell of various flowers, tomatoes (love the smell, hate the taste), and grass being mown. I splurge all the time because my days of having to save for retirement are behind me. We aren't traveling due to Mike's hips so I treat myself and him. Have a wonderful weekend!

The smell of dirt is very much a summer smell. My grandpa also had a huge garden and I spent plenty of time in it during the summer. Usually trying to avoid actually weeding or picking peas, but still. Good memories of picking raspberries (despite the bugs) and sour cherries, and of learning to snap beans and shell peas on the porch with my grandma. Thanks for stopping by and triggering those memories for me with you comments! I appreciate you!
