WQ - Summer Fun

You know what I like about summer days? They're just made for doing things . . . even if it's nothing. Especially if it's nothing. ~Bill Watterson

I can just picture Calvin saying this to his stuffed tiger Hobbes in the comic strip. I can kind of picture myself thinking something along this line when I was a kid, or even as a stay-at-home mom with my own kids. Sure, there was the potential of feeling a little bored with doing nothing, but there's something so fun about having the freedom to just do nothing but enjoy the sunshine and not have to be in a hurry to get somewhere. And that is certainly one way to define summer fun!

Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds. ~Regina Brett

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~John Lubbock

One benefit of Summer was that each day we had more light to read by. ~Jeannette Walls

When I think of what's fun to do in the summertime, obviously vacation time comes to mind. Years ago, we often went to a summer music festival with the kids. We camped with friends at a nearby state campground and spent the days at the theme park combining thrill rides and rock concerts.

Summer means happy times and good sunshine. It means going to the beach, going to Disneyland, having fun. ~Brian Wilson

Our big family vacation was usually in the fall, but there were weekend trips and fun days during the summer as well. Fun meant fireworks, local fireman's carnivals, swimming, hiking and outings with friends, ice cream and popsicles, sitting on the porch watching thunderstorms, hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill for dinner.

If summer had one defining scent, it'd definitely be the smell of barbecue. ~Katie Lee

Nowadays, we have less time to go on vacations or just be lazy because we're working through the summer, but for me it's fun to go hiking or walking and keep an eye out for birds. To eat on the patio at a restaurant and to go out for ice cream. It's always fun to watch fireworks. We enjoy going to some baseball games. And I definitely enjoy cookouts and having the option to grill or smoke something for dinner.

Early summer days are a jubilee time for birds. In the fields, around the house, in the barn, in the woods, in the swamp - everywhere love and songs and nests and eggs. ~E.B. White

The fundamental truth: a baseball game is nothing but a great slow contraption for getting you to pay attention to the cadence of a summer day. ~Michael Chabon
