Scripture and a Snapshot - You Are There

You have searched me, LORD,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue,
you, LORD, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light will become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

~Psalm 139:1-12~

Share Four Somethings - June 2025

One of the blogging traditions I enjoy is Share Four Somethings at the end of every month. It's a link0up that invites us to share some recent things from our lives in these categories: Some Things I Loved, Some Things I Learned, Some Things That Went Well, and Some Thing I Let Go Of. I usually like to include a little bit of a bonus: Some Things I  Read and a little of What's Coming Up Soon

Some Things I Loved:

Although we had some really uncomfortably hot days, for the most part I loved the weather. It's nice to not have to worry about taking along a jacket, and I love the sunny days. We had perfect weather for the first baseball game we went to this season (the chorus sang the anthem - which I also loved). Our Super Saturdays/Sundays were more low-key this month, but seeing the Lavender Fest at Timbuk Farms was a really good one.

Some Things I Learned:

Last weekend I attended a Sweet Adelines Regional workshop in Louisville. This wasn't a competition or convention, exactly, but more of an educational event. The focus of the event was understanding and improving our chorus and quartet scores in the Expression category, and we had one of the International judges explaining it to us. I was only able to attend the Saturday portion of the event, and it sounds like there was some really great stuff on Friday evening too, which I'm sure the SVC members who attended will share with the rest of us. So on Saturday, I learned some helpful tips and tweaks for vocal warmups and getting the resonance in the right place. I learned more about how judges determine scores for the various elements that are evaluated in contests, and perhaps most importantly, we all learned what we can work on as a chorus that will take us up to the next level!

Some Things That Went Well:

At long last, I got my dental implant placed, and it went quickly and well. My mouth was a bit sore for a day or two afterwards, because it was rather a tight fit, but some ibuprofen took care of that.

I wanted some flowers to put outside by the door, and not only did hubby acquire and plant them for me, he also looked after most of the cleanup that needed done in our patio area. We don't have any patio furniture yet, but at least the place is tidy! Some night soon when it's pleasant weather, we'll have to take our folding chairs out and sip our evening coffee under the stars.

Some Things I Let Go Of:

I did let go of some things in my Buy Nothing group like I vowed last month. That was just round one - there's more that I need to get rid of!

It's not gone yet, but I do need to let go of my old desk chair which is just no good any more. I need to get a new one before this one goes in the trash. A week or two ago, it kind of collapsed and the lever to jack it up no longer works to raise or lower it, and it is a bit too low. We put a couple of cushions on the seat to make it usable, but I'm getting pretty sick of it. In fact, I think I'll go browse IKEA right now and pick something out. Finding time to go to the store and get it might be a challenge, but we'll see. I guess it's possible someone will give one away on Buy Nothing, and I am keeping my eye out there.

Some Things I Read:

Finished and reviewed these since my last SFS:

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn
The Blind Scribe by Connilyn Cossette

Finished but not yet reviewed:

Jane of Lantern Hill by L.M. Montgomery

Here are the books I'm currently reading:

The Mysterious Case of the Missing Crime Writer by Ragnar Jónasson - also in the home stretch, I think
Murder Most Fair by Anna Lee Huber  - started, but have spent much more time on the other two
The Highland Heist by Pepper Basham - just barely started, and need to hustle, because it's a review!
10 Marchfield Square by Nicola Whyte - just picked up from the library, and I can't waste time because it's in high demand and I doubt I'll be able to renew it.

All of my reading news is at Just A Second if you're interested.

What's Coming Up Soon?

We've decided to go to Maryland for the long weekend so I'm very excited about that! It will be a fun way to kick off July, and the month will wind up being bookended with family get-togethers. At the very end of July we have a vacation home booked and all the kids will be with us there for a long weekend. Other than those two trips, there's not much on the calendar for the month ahead. A baseball game is the only thing I can think of at the moment.

Share something in the comments, or share four somethings with the rest of us in the link party!

Simple Meal Planning - Plan to Eat

WOTY and Goals - June Journal

There's a few more days left in June, but I decided to prepare my monthly look back at how I've been doing with my Word of the Year and goals early. And try to keep it brief.

First of all, how is it the end of June already? In many ways it felt like the month went by so quickly. I will say that the weekdays were largely unexciting. Go to work, come home from work. Not often that the weekday routine changed. In fact, overall it was a low-key kind of month, which should have lent itself well to my personal goals such as practicing better sleep habits and sticking to a regular schedule with household tasks. I wish I could say I did a consistently good job through the month, but there were definitely some ups and downs.

The general plan for housekeeping was to make Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays the days to concentrate on getting general tidying and chores and laundry done. Obviously more time-intensive tasks are better done on Saturdays. Monday and Wednesday evenings are the ones I'm usually out, so this plan keeps them free. Most weekdays I struggle to get home from work much before six, and to be honest I don't feel like doing any cooking or cleaning, so often I've done just the minimum. But when I make myself do just the little bit each day, at the very least it keeps things from piling up.

My record wasn't stellar this month, and sadly my desk and the spare room are still unorganized and untidy, but other than that things are going along okay. One evening hubby and I talked about who is doing what and how we want to divvy up some tasks and we agreed that a lot of the chores we should just do together as much as possible. Doing the dishes and meal planning, for example, are more efficient when we do it together, and grocery shopping may not be the most romantic date ever, but it is something we can do together. One of my asks was to work together on meal planning and see if he can get dinner going some nights, and maybe we can make the meals together more often too. We accomplished one big cleaning project this month that was kind of forced upon us. After dog sitting for our son, we decided it was high time we steam cleaned the carpets, so that got done at last!

Oh, and as usual, some weeks I make use of the habit tracker in my calendar and other weeks I don't.

Here's a brief recap of the month so far, along with some photos.

Tuesday, June 3 - It is pretty cool that my dentist office is right next door to my work. They are very efficient and my appointments have all been very quick so I just take my lunch break whenever my appointment time is. This time I walked over since the weather was nice. And I spotted this green heron in the pond on my way.

Wednesday, June 4 - Scioto Valley Chorus sang that anthem at the Columbus Clippers game, so hubby and I took in the baseball game on a beautiful evening. The only downside was that we missed the church event night because we already had the game planned.

Saturday, June 7 - After a rather lazy morning, hubby and I both went out to get our hair cut. My hairdresser is currently working at a barbershop with vintage Mayberry vibes so that's where I go to get my haircut. Maybe it's a little odd for me to get my hair cut at a barbershop instead of a salon but it works for me! Then we walked a bit on the rail trail and got barbecue for lunch.

Sunday, June 8 -  After church we had a quick lunch, and later on we finally had a chance to hang out with the kids after the long weekend and their vacation. We met at a park so Vee could check out the  playground and we walked a bit. Then they came back to our place and we grilled for dinner and relaxed.

Thursday, June 12 - I managed to leave work a bit early so we could hit the road to Plain City and meet the kids at Der Dutchman for dinner. This was our family's Father's Day outing, since the guys wanted to see the classic car show that happens there on Thursday evenings. Oh, and the food was really good too!

Saturday, June 14 - I went to meet hubby at work at lunchtime so I could see their Lavender Festival. It sure was pretty! It was cloudy and looked like it might rain any moment, but it didn't, and I felt like the darker skies made a good contrast to the purples in the photos.

Sunday, June 15 - after church we had a quick lunch and hubby's hockey game was early in the afternoon. The kids came over later and we enjoyed the pool.

Tuesday, June 17 - after work, hubby and I met friends from church for dinner. When we got home, the kids brought Zafira the dog over so we could pet-sit while they were on vacation.

Wednesday, June 18 - By the time I got home from work, I was so tired from allergies kicking my butt that I stayed home to rest while hubby went to D+D at church without me.

Thursday, June 19 - another dentist appointment and I FINALLY got my implant placed and that is finished!

Saturday, June 21 - I got up much earlier than usual for a weekend, as I was driving to Louisville for a Regional Sweet Adelines workshop. It was a long but very fun day.

Sunday, June 22 - It was hard to get up early for worship team rehearsal and church since I didn't get home till after midnight the day before. The afternoon nap was much needed! After hubby got back from hockey, we went grocery shopping and rented a steam cleaner . . . because the carpet needed a clean after having Zafira for almost a week!

Monday, June 23 - The kids came to pick Zafira up in the evening while I was at chorus rehearsal.

Tuesday, June 24 - when I got home from work, we quickly steam cleaned the upstairs so hubby could return the machine to the store while I got dinner going.

Thursday, June 26 - I'd kind of hoped to go for a swim after work, but it rained really hard so I took a pass on that. Hubby played hockey in the evening and I got some laundry and housework done.

And here we are at the weekend. Hubby is working this morning and we have a grad party we're going to later today. Not sure exactly what we'll do with the kids tomorrow - maybe just spend some time at the pool and go for ice cream or something simple. I could really enjoy a Whit's Custard, honestly.

I meant to have my "25 in '25" list into some kind of shareable format but it is still just a handwritten list in my daily planner, and I don't want to delay posting this any longer. Ah, the life of a procrastinator!

My Word of the Year for 2025 is Practice. Put the things I've learned and that I know into practice. Practice doing what I know I should do and want to do. Practice how I want to perform. Practice―and get better at―the things that are important to me. Make a practice of healthy and beneficial habits and routines. In 2024, my WOTY was Rhythm, and one way I tried to establish a rhythm was by keeping a very brief daily diary, to watch for daily and weekly patterns to develop and to be intentional about keeping the good ones going. In 2025, I'll continue keeping the daily diary, but with a focus on how well I'm meeting my goals in the disciplines I'm practicing. See my WOTY post for 2025 for how I chose this word: Word of the Year 2025 - Practice.

A Late Night Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What does adventure mean to you?

Doing something new that involves stepping out of a comfort zone or taking a risk. It's the things you see in wilderness survival stories, but I think that anything that stretches you or challenges you can be viewed as an adventure too. Going away to college, getting married, becoming a parent, launching a new career or venture, moving to a new place . . . all of these are adventures I've been on, and I think retirement is one of the adventures still awaiting me.

Also, it's much more positive to frame a big or scary change in your life as an "adventure" instead of a "crisis".

2. What are your thoughts on tipping? What businesses or service providers do you regularly tip? Do you resent being asked if you'd like to add a tip? What about when a suggested amount is presented?

I like to tip well when I'm provided with excellent service, but only in business sectors where it's long been accepted that a tip is appropriate. So at full service restaurants, obviously. My hairdresser. It's been absolute ages since we had pizza delivered, like way before DoorDash was even a thing, but we did tip the pizza delivery guy. I do not typically add a tip at counter service restaurants. I don't think it happens very often that I'm asked if I'd like to add a tip . . . other than the options that appear on the screen. Those are easy to ignore. If it's a full service restaurant but you pay at the counter, then I don't mind at all if the cashier asks about a tip, but I do think it's presumptuous to have tip options on absolutely every screen. I do like having a tip amount calculated on a restaurant receipt so I don't have to do quick math in my head or whip out the calculator on my phone.

 3. I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream . . . do we? Is ice cream a favorite treat at your house? What's your favorite flavor? Regular, soft serve, gelato, sherbet, or some sort of non-dairy version of ice cream . . . what's your pleasure?

Oh yes, we sure love ice cream here! Other than licorice, I think I enjoy every flavor, so I have a hard time saying which one is my favorite. In the running would be Moose Tracks or anything similar, Cookies n Cream, Black Cherry, and of course any coffee flavored ice cream. We usually go for regular ice cream, but soft serve or frozen yogurt is fine as well. I seldom choose gelato or sherbet but I do like both.

This was soon after we moved. Hubby and I saw no
point in dirtying extra dishes since it's just the two
of us, so we ate ice cream right out of the container!
We really felt like we were getting away with
something!

4. What's your 'back in my day, we ____________________' story or saying?

I should have asked my kids if I have a go-to anecdote. I don't know if I have one I bring up regularly as a judgey thing (though they might correct me on that), but I think I do comparison type things often. Like it amazes me how easy it is to stay in touch with people that live far away now that we have unlimited calling and texting on our smartphones, and email, and video calling and more. And when I was a kid, we hand-wrote letters to mail to grandparents; and we carefully planned for when and how long we would talk on the phone with distant loved ones, because long distance was cheaper at certain times.

My truly curmudgeonly "back in my day" saying used to be about weather-related school closings. I don't have as much opportunity to regale family with this one any more, but it goes something like this: When I was in school, we almost never closed the school or had a shortened day because of the weather. In fact, in twelve years of public school in Calgary, I don't remember ever being sent home early or having school closed because of snow. Not even once. The only time I remember school closing for weather was one time when we had really high winds and there were tornado warnings. They closed the school early and sent everyone home, mostly so that the buses could finish the routes before the wind got too bad. The funny thing is, I bet most of us that usually walked home from school walked that day too.

To be fair, although we had a lot of snow, it was pretty much always powdery, not the heavy wet stuff that we get in the east, and we never had an ice storm.

5.  Somehow this is our last Hodgepodge in the month of June. Next week's Hodgepodge lands in July. Wow. Sum up your June using three adjectives.

 Busy. Expensive. Hot.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We are still trying to decide whether we'll stay home or go visit the kids over the Independence Day weekend. I really want to go visit them, because when a movable holiday like the 4th lands on a Friday, it feels wrong to NOT take advantage of the long weekend opportunity, am I right? But there are Independence Day things to do here too, and it is a long drive . . . I just don't know. But if we're going, we need to decide soon!

Since Independence Day is coming up next week (and so is Canada Day), we chose Patriotism for our current Wednesday Quotes link-up theme. I would love to have you stop by and read, and I hope you'll join in too. You can find it here: WQ - Patriotism

It's almost midnight so I need to post while it's still Wednesday! What's your idea of adventure? Leave a comment and let me know!
