10 on the 10th - The Best of November

On the 10th of each month, Marsha In the Middle asks ten questions for us to answer in as much or little detail as we wish. This month Marsha has asked us to tell about ten things we like to do or to eat in November.

I'm going to start with some things I particularly look forward to eating in November. I'm not sure it will work out as neatly as having five things to eat and five things to do, but we'll see. Since November is the month for Thanksgiving (again!) and for my husband's birthday, there are at least a few foods that I associate with this time of year.

Pumpkin Roll - I do love pumpkin pie as well, but pumpkin roll is the superior dessert using pumpkin!

Chocolate Cheesecake - This is my husband's favorite and what he always asks for as his birthday cake, so I know I'll be making one towards the end of the month.

Corn Pudding - a must-have at any Thanksgiving meal! I'd eat it for dessert, honestly.

Sweet Potato Casserole - This is one of my favorite components of Thanksgiving dinner, and I don't have it often during the rest of the year.

Homemade bread - I always love homemade bread, and I love baking it, but I don't bake very much now that it's just the two of us here. But Thanksgiving dinner is the perfect excuse to bake up some challah or some pesto bread, or maybe light rye bread would be good. Maybe all of them by the time the month is over! I can hardly wait - I just love bread!

That's five! So here are five things I especially enjoy doing this time of year:

Going to hockey games - Maybe this is more specific to this year, since we have tickets to three Blue Jackets games this month. But I do enjoy going to games, and I like to watch on TV too, although I'm far less likely to sit and pay attention for a whole game on TV. Going to the game is an evening out!

Beginning holiday preparations - We don't decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving, but the anticipation of making plans and doing some holiday shopping starts earlier. If I'm sending Christmas cards, that's something I need to work on in November. We'll work on our holiday music at chorus rehearsals so we're ready for the caroling shows we have on the calendar for December.

Baking - This could be part of the holiday preparations, but I'm listing it separately. I really like to bake, but no longer do it very often. November is one of the months that offers me a little extra incentive to find the time, because I want to make the bread and the pumpkin rolls and the chocolate cheesecake. And maybe a few cookies too.

Cozy evenings at home  - I did say that sitting down and watching a whole hockey game on TV isn't my most likely way to spend an evening, but I do enjoy it. I also like watching movies and shows from time to time, and there's something very cozy about sitting in our comfy chairs watching a show together while sipping coffee. Although I usually have my laptop open too!

Musical things - It used to be that the holiday season kicked off when the community chorus I sang with did our holiday concert somewhere around the end of November. I haven't sung with that chorus in several years, and have since moved away, but still November brings with it some musical opportunities. Last year I started singing with Scioto Valley Chorus and learning the holiday repertoire so I could go to holiday performances and carol with the chorus was a lot of fun. This year we are making the holiday performances available to guests who rehearse with us so they can get a taste of women's barbershop with no commitment. And we hope they'll love the experience and join us! I'm looking forward to it. Usually we find some other concerts or music-related activities in November as well, but we'll have to see what this year brings!

Simple Meal Planning - Plan to Eat

  1. Oh, I do love a pumpkin roll! I make a scrumptious pumpkin cake (if I do say so myself), but I've never made a pumpkin roll. My husband keeps wanting one...I just tell him my pumpkin cake is a flat pumpkin roll. I think my cake is too thick to roll, but maybe I'll give it a try some day! I have only baked bread once in my entire life. It took me forever. For a while I wanted a bread machine, but I try not to eat too much bread (it's my downfall). Your pesto bread sounds delicious. And, cozy nights in are nice as long as you have days out. Our days out right now are spent going to physical therapy appointments. I'm hoping for a reprieve from that soon. Thanks so much for linking up!

    1. I use the pumpkin roll recipe on the inside of the Libby's canned pumpkin and it's really pretty easy! But not much different than a good pumpkin cake. Hope you'll soon get a break from all those PT appointments! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I find I do more baking in November and December than almost any other time of year! We're already talking about what kind of bread and sweets we want to make... I am all about the breads too.
