Five Minute Friday - Capacity

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

enormous capacity
mental capacity
seating capacity
capacity for greatness

I'm writing this quite late on Friday evening, as I was at a chorus rehearsal earlier in the evening. We have a coaching workshop this weekend and spent today's practice working on some techniques to improve our sound, and there were a few times when the improvement or difference was huge, in contrast to a very small adjustment that each singer made.

How is it related to capactiy? I think we have the capacity to accomplish more or be better, and sometimes all we need is a coach or instructor to show us what we can change to achieve that. A good coach, teacher, mentor, or manager can see the capacity and potential and encourage that improvement.

Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. ~Warren G. Bennis

God has given each of us a tremendous capacity and opportunity to live joyfully, to experience abundance and fulfillment, and to make a difference. That doesn't necessarily mean fame and fortune and travel and all of the things that we associate with success in the world, of course, but I have to wonder if we miss out on the greatness of what God has for us in our "ordinary" lives because we think we're not important enough to make an impact.

Every morning, when we wake up, we have twenty-four brand-new hours to live. What a precious gift! We have the capacity to live in a way that these twenty-four hours will bring peace, joy, and happiness to ourselves and others. ~Nhat Hanh

The principles of living greatly include the capacity to face trouble with courage, disappointment with cheerfulness, and trial with humility. ~Thomas S. Monson

Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed. ~Storm Jameson

Since God has created us, he knows what capacity he has given us, and he knows the capacity we can fill. Therefore, he is also the one we should turn to for the instruction we need to live up to the potential he has designed for us.

The sovereign LORD has given me the capacity to be his spokesman,
so that I know how to help the weary.
He wakes me up every morning;
he makes me alert so I can listen attentively as disciples do.
~Isaiah 50:4~

I'm participating in the Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write. In order to simplify her blogging schedule, Marsha has decided to choose themes for her posts as she goes, and has invited those of us who participate to simply include a quote in our post and choose our own themes as well. I still have the original list of prompts that I'll probably use from time to time, or I may combine my WQ posts with something else. Simplifying sounds like a good option for me as well! Since I've included quotes in this post, it will be linked at Wednesday Quotes.

  1. Kym, I love this. Sometimes I get discouraged when I feel like I need to do more, and I probably do. However, I like the encouragement in this quote, "Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed. ~Storm Jameson" We are so lucky to be able to think freely. Thanks for linking to WQ. I'm always inspired by your writing. That is one of the gifts God has given you the capacity to do. :)

    1. Thank you, that's very kind of you to say, :-) If I remember correctly, that version was the NET, and it helped me understand that passage a little differently.

  4. I particularly like the first 2 quotes you shared. What a great definition of a leader. I think back on all of the principals I worked under and only maybe one of them was able to take the vision and make it reality. Mondays have become my favorite day of the week because as Nhat Hahn suggests, it is a brand new start and clean slate, not just a new days but the beginning of a new week.
