Wednesday Hodgepodge - Hodgepodge Adventures

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  Did you watch the Kentucky Derby this past weekend? Have you ever been to a horse race? Ever ridden a horse? Did you enjoy it? Have you ever been to Kentucky? Do you like Bourbon?

I did not watch the Derby. I might have done, if I'd remembered, but I had no idea. I've been to chuckwagon races and barrel racing at the Calgary Stampede - does that count? Those are races, and they involve horses, so I think so. I love chuckwagon racing, it's so exciting! I've been horseback riding, though very rarely throughout my adult life. The last time was at least a decade ago when I spent a day with my best friend from high school. I enjoy horseback riding, and wish I could do it more often so I'd feel more at home in the saddle. I've been to Kentucky a couple of times over the past several months for Sweet Adelines events in Louisville, which is a beautiful city. I do like bourbon, but my preference is bourbon cream.

2. What's something you wish you'd placed in a time capsule twenty-five years ago?

I can't think of anything! What's wrong with my brain?

3. Are you adventurous? Elaborate.

In some ways I am, which I think is a wishy-washy answer. I'm adventurous in that I like to try new things and am generally an optimistic person so my attitude tends to be along the lines of, "let's try that! What's the worst that could happen?" But there are a couple of caveats . . .  I'm not as adventurous when it comes to trying unfamiliar foods, and there are some things I know I'm not good at or that really scare me, so I wouldn't be adventurous in those areas. For example, I'm not in the least bit athletic or coordinated, so I try to avoid doing anything like sports or dancing if people are watching me.

4. Something you want to make this year? It can be a new recipe, craft, diy project, a milestone you've set for yourself . . . anything at all.

Oh wow, another question that gives me brain freeze . . . Well? I want to clean up our little patio and get some furniture and so on to make it a comfortable outdoor "sitting room" we can enjoy, instead of it being just wasted space.

I do have some recipes I want to try, if only I could make the time!

I was also going to say I would like to make a good friend this year, which sounds a little pathetic, doesn't it? We've been making friends here, but we really don't have anyone to hang out with.

5.  Cinco de Mayo was also celebrated this past weekend . . . do you like Mexican food? if so what's your favorite dish? Have you ever been to Mexico? Margarita - yes or no?

I like some Mexican food - like the "Americanized Mexican restaurant" foods, which I suspect are not much like the foods actually eaten in Mexico. Flautas, burritos, enchiladas, and quesadillas would be favorites. I've never been to Mexico. The closest I've been is the Mexican pavilion at EPCOT. Haha. And Margaritas? YES PLEASE. Love them.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

The ducklings hatched on Monday during the day! I was hurrying out the door to chorus when I noticed so I stopped in my tracks, called my husband out to see and we spent a precious few minutes looking and taking a few photos. I hoped the little family would wait until Tuesday afternoon or evening to head for the pond, but they were gone by morning (except for the one egg that wasn't viable). We took a walk over to the pond and found them there, but Jemima Puddle-duck kept the babies under her wings. So we are empty nesters once again. They grow up so fast!

Happy Mother's Day!

Have you been on any adventures this week? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. LOL yeah, I've been to the Mexico pavilion A LOT of times in my life. I know there's some new-ish tequila place there now that boasts all kinds of fancy ones. I would probably try that if I ever went back, which I cannot see myself doing until I have grandkids!

    1. Last time we were there was in 2018 so it's been a few years and I'm sure there's been some interesting changes. I think it would be fun to go do the Disney experience with my grandkids! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. Baby ducks are so sweet. I have never been to Calgary but have always been intrigued by the Calgary Stampede. Maybe one of these days we'll get there. Have a nice weekend!

    1. I haven't been to the Stampede since we moved away but I keep hoping someday I'll be in Alberta to visit family during Stampede week. So much fun! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I have always wanted to go to the Derby, but my husband doesn't like crowds. I know I shouldn't let that stop me, but I don't like to spend money that doesn't involve both of us. His oldest brother lives in Versailles, KY which is right in the heart of horse country. But, I doubt they've been to the Derby either. I have ridden horses as my grandpa always had a pony or horse around.

I get the whole want to make a good friend thing. It's been nine years since we moved here, and I still don't feel I've made a single really good friend. I have lots of friendly people in my life, but no one I'd consider a good friend. That's scary when you're my age, and your husband is in failing health. But, life goes on, and so shall I.

    1. I'm sorry you're also in the spot of not having made a good close friend, and after quite a few years too! I have some very dear friends who are close in relationship to me, but don't live close to me physically, and I miss having someone to meet for coffee or dinner, or to stop by for drinks in the evening. I suppose I should be very grateful for being able to maintain the friendships I do have via phone calls and messenger but there's just something different about being in the same room. Praying that you do connect in a special way with someone soon! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. It's probably true that Mexican food is adapted to the country's taste that's like the Italian food ! I A good idea to clean your patio and put some furniture to sit outside !

    1. That's true - I bet it's more than just Mexican food that's been adapted to suit American tastes! Thank you, I'm going to try to get that patio looking nicer this year. So glad you stopped by to visit!

  5. enjoyed your answers. Those ducklings are so cute. When I was younger I always thought it would be neat to be a Barrel Racer...I didn't even have a horse.

    1. I dreamed of doing barrel racing too - never mind that I didn't have a horse! I used to wish I could be an outrider for the chuckwagon racing too. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
