WQ - Iconic Movie Lines

I'm participating in the Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write. The prompt on the list for this week was Movie Quotes. How would I choose which movies to quote, and would I choose quotes from movies on a particular subject, or choose quotes from one particular movie? This has been simmering for several days now, and I've decided to do the most obvious thing, which is to focus on the movie that I feel is the most quoted in my family. And probably not just my family! The Princess Bride is well-known and contains so many iconic lines that so many people can quote!

Favorite movie: The Princess Bride

We insert many of these lines into everyday conversation, and they are well-used in memes! How many of these classics do you know?

Obviously:

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. ~Inigo Montoya

Vizzini: Inconceivable!
Inigo: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
*************************
Miracle Max: Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive.
*************************
The Ancient Booer: And that's what she is, the Queen of Refuse. So bow down to her if you want, bow to her. Bow to the Queen of Slime, the Queen of Filth, the Queen of Putrescence. Boo. Boo. Rubbish. Filth. Slime. Muck. Boo. Boo! Boo!
*************************

We often quote parts of the movie version of the duel of wits between Vizzini and the Man in Black, but this particular version is from the book, which I read and reviewed on my book blog many years ago. (See it here: Recent Reads - The Princess Bride)

"Fool!" cried the hunchback. "You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well know is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line."
He was quite cheery until the iocane powder took effect.
~The Princess Bride by William Goldman, page 180

The Princess Bride: An Illustrated Edition of S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure

*************************
Did you ever think you'd get to quote this line from a movie in a real-life situation? I honestly never expected I would, but in 2020, this exchange seemed almost prophetic! Haha.

Fezzik: Why do you wear a mask? Were you burned by acid, or something like that?
Man in Black: Oh no, it's just that they're terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future.

(For the record, I think we can all agree that masks were NOT comfortable, even though almost everyone was wearing them.)

*************************
There are so many little pieces of the movie that have made their way into memes that pretty much everyone is familiar with.

One of my students gifted me a magnet with this one because we watched The Princess Bride in our Fiction Writing class.

This is one of my favorites, and I use it every year at "spring forward" time:

Yes, it's true, when I taught the High School Fiction Writing class at co-op, we watched a few movies during the year to help us see certain fiction writing concepts in action. Most were Disney/Pixar animated movies, but The Princess Bride was in the mix as well, because it uses so many elements of fairy tales.

If you're curious about the textbook that was the basis for that class, I reviewed it on my homeschool blog: Writing Fiction - Bringing Stories to Life (A Homeschool Coffee Break Review)

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride

Related book I really enjoyed a number of years ago: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes (Reviewed on Just A Second: Recent Reads: As You Wish)

And finally, the trailer:

*************************

Oh that was so much fun! I don't know how inspirational or educational it was (unless you're looking for a homeschool writing textbook, I guess), but it was great fun! Thanks for joining me! Have fun storming the castle!

  1. If there were a way to write in little bitty letters, I would use it right now. I have never watched the Princess Bride so these quotes are over my head. I may have to watch it one of these days.

    1. If there was a way to adequately express shock in a comment, I would use it. O,O Yes, you should watch it! It's such a great movie, and so funny! Glad you stopped by to comment, and I hope when/if you watch the movie, you'll enjoy it!

  2. This was a fun post, Kym. I watched it, but I was never as well versed in it as you are. When you teach something you really get to know it. I bet your writing class was a lot of fun. I loved teaching writing. I still have some samples of my kids in both first and fourth grades.
