Wednesday Hodgepodge - Pi and Coffee

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Thursday is National Pi Day . . . are you good at math? What was the last thing you had to calculate? Did you use your head or technology? Last slice of pie you ate?

I'm pretty good at practical accounting and household math, like keeping books and figuring out prices, multiplying or halving recipes, and that sort of thing. But anything more abstract? Forget it. I do a lot of calculating at work, adding up money and balancing spreadsheets and that sort of thing. I use a calculator.

I really like pie, but I haven't had any for a long time. In fact, I can't remember the last time. I haven't baked pie since last Pi Day, I believe, but I'm pretty sure I've chosen pie as dessert when we've eaten out. I've likely had meat pie more recently, but I'm not sure when. I used to always make meat pie and dessert pies for Pi Day, but with just the two of us here, it's not the best choice any more.

2. What makes a house a home?

Hmm. Hard to quantify. It's a home when it feels lived and loved in. A safe and stable place for the family that lives there, and where others are welcome to "feel at home" there too.

3. Your current favorite green thing?

My daughter's green hair. But I don't have a current photo of it.

4. How do you define achievement? How does your personal definition look similar to, or different than, society's definition? What's something you think is worth achieving in life?

Let's see . . . my definition would be something like: reaching a goal of excellence or mastery that you set for yourself, or accomplishing something that you had to work hard for and be intentional about. I looked up a dictionary definition and found this: a thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill. I guess my definition isn't that different, although I would consider some seemingly small accomplishments to be achievements worth celebrating. Like facing a fear or overcoming a personal hurdle. The things I think are worth achieving include: belonging to a family or circle that is loving and supportive; finding a calling or role where you can use your skill and talent, and learn and grow; and getting the education you need to reach your goals.

5. What song is a good soundtrack for your life right now?

Another hard choice. There are two that came to mind so I'll share them both, because they might not be familiar, and they're quite different musically! I'm glad that the ones that came to mind today are more upbeat, not that long ago it would have been something a lot darker. Here are two I really like: "Just What I Needed" by Apollo LTD and "Bottom of the Barrel" by Rusty Shipp.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I've rambled enough in this Hodgepodge, so I'll just close with a wish for St Patrick's Day.

What are your thoughts on pie? Did you listen to my soundtrack songs? What did you think? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. Luckily I do love math and as I write this I am helping Evan solve his geometry equations (why I never just use the answer key I don't know!). Though I can not remember the last time any of us has had pie; we aren't huge pie fans but if I remember I will make us "pizza pie" for dinner on Pi Day.

    1. My struggle with the kids' math was that I understood the answer key but usually couldn't figure out where my kid went wrong. I was thankful for online math classes when my kids were in high school! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I think I've made exactly two pies from scratch in my life! I couldn't get the pie crust right so I just never made another! I do love pie, though! My husband loves pecan pie so I'll buy one for him randomly. He loves to cut it into pieces, freeze it, and eat it cold! I have never tried it because I don't need to discover another really fattening thing I like! My favorite pie is probably either coconut cream or Key Lime pie!

I was good at math, but I didn't take any beyond Algebra. My daughter was majored in Math in college and understands it up one side and down the other. She gets that from her dad. I, however, am the more practical one when it comes to math application!

Have a wonderful Pi Day, Kym!

    1. I think perhaps one of my proud achievements is that I can make a really good pie crust! But I haven't done it in a long while, and choose the refrigerated pie crust shortcuts instead. I love all the pies you mentioned. :-)

We had pizza at the church dinner tonight, and I chose a lemon dessert that was pretty much like a lemon pie, but in a rectangle pan. So I guess those both count as Pi dishes. ;-)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, and I hope you had a great Pi Day as well!

  4. I like pie and might choose that over cake given the choice. I don't make a lot of pies, but am hosting friends for Easter dinner and have plans to make a key lime pie for dessert. It looks and feels springy and it's one of my hubs favorites. Have a great weekend!

  5. I enjoyed your answers as always. I liked the first song...the second one, I liked the drums, but it was a little "hard" for me..lol. I've never liked heavier rock music..of course I listened to a few heavy metal christian bands in HS.
