Five Minute Friday - Hurry

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

hurry up and wait
what's your hurry?

********************
We're always in a hurry, it seems. I wonder, in our hurry to get where we're going and get to the next thing, are we missing what we have right now? The joy or the opportunity or the responsibility that's right in front of us, but we rush past it.

I used to be mostly focused on the present moment, and I felt like I had a lot going on in every moment that I didn't want to miss. I knew I was living the good life and wanted to enjoy every bit of it. There were things to look forward to, of course, but I was loving the here and now. Then unexpectedly, life changed. And all of a sudden, the present wasn't nearly so enjoyable. The days became monotonous and seemingly purposeless, and I could hardly wait for the days to hurry by so I could get to something that I enjoyed.

Now I have to hurry to work in the morning, and hurry home in the afternoon, and I often feel like I don't have time to relax and enjoy the things I want to do. And I'm still tempted to wish the weekdays would hurry past so I can get to a slower paced weekend, and the weeks to hurry by so I would be with loved ones sooner. What if I'm missing something good that I do have in the present, because I want to hurry past it to something I think is better?

What's your hurry?

For everything there is a season,
a right time for every intention under heaven
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
 a time to throw stones and a time to gather stones,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to tear and a time to sew,
a time to keep silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

What does the worker gain from his efforts? I have seen the task God has given humanity to keep us occupied. He has made everything suited to its time; also, he has given human beings an awareness of eternity; but in such a way that they can't fully comprehend, from beginning to end, the things God does. I know that there is nothing better for them to do than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live. Still, the fact that everyone can eat and drink and enjoy the good that results from all his work, is a gift of God. I know that
whatever God does will last forever;
there is nothing to add or subtract from it;
and God has done it so that people will fear him.

~Ecclesiastes 3:1-14~

  1. "What if I'm missing something good that I do have in the present, because I want to hurry past it to something I think is better?" A very good question. I know I have missed some things I wish I hadn't because I was in such a hurry I didn't notice them.
    P.S. Good song to go with the post.
