It's been a long time since I did any sewing, and several years since I did any knitting or handwork, but I'm reasonably confident that if I picked up a sewing or knitting project this week, the basics would come back to me and I might be slow and make mistakes at first, but I'd figure it out. That's because I'd follow a pattern. A design showing me how the pieces fit together and in what order. Instructions that would tell me what weight of yard to use and how many of which kind of stitch to do. Someone else with much more expertise created an original and kept a record of all the steps taken so that I can follow their example with some degree of confidence that the project will turn out.

Seeing patterns in the world around us helps us appreciate the intricacy and rhythm and design of nature, and allows us to create and appreciate beauty and art. In music and dance, it's easy to see how the patterns that repeat predictably that keep everything synchronized and provide a foundation for creativity and variation within that framework.

The creative mind doesn't have to have the whole pattern-it can have just a little piece and be able to envision the whole picture in completion. ~Arthur Fry

Mathameticians and scientists tell us that there are patterns throughout their fields of study as well. Those patterns have never been as easy for me to recognize, but they are there. After all, number patterns are how we memorized our times-tables when we were kids, and design patterns helped us make sense of science concepts like the periodic table and chemical reactions.

Math is sometimes called the science of patterns. ~Ronald Graham

The Bible is full of patterns too. We can see the patterns of behavior of God's people throughout the narrative . . . gratitude for God's protection and provision for them, then disobedience and complaining, then crying out for relief when God allows them to experience the consequences of their disobedience, and then repentance and renewed gratitude when God extends his grace and mercy. If we're honest we can see the same pattern throughout all of history, and in our own lives too; and hopefully we can learn from it and stay in the right relationship that brings blessings. We can also see the patterns of the coming Messiah that God gave to Israel and how Jesus fulfilled every prophecy perfectly. One pattern I've noticed recently is the rhythm of seasons and Sabbaths that God has given us. A time to work and a time to rest, and I'm trying to learn from that.

Finding patterns is the essence of wisdom. ~Dennis Prager

We've been given good patterns for living in right relationship with God and how to be successful in following his instructions.

Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
~II Timothy 1:13~

    1. that's sadly true, we don't always notice our own wandering from the path until something brings us up short. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I used to teach the kids that our brains naturally seek out patterns. I think our hearts do, too.
