Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thoughts From the Peanut Gallery

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Did you watch any coverage of the 9/11 services on Monday? How do you feel on this day some 22 years after the events occurred? share more if you want to share more.

I did not. For several reasons. I rarely watch any TV in the first place, and I wasn't home to watch on Monday anyway. But also, I still cannot bring myself to watch any documentaries of that horribly tragic day. It bothers me too much. Another reason I didn't watch is the disrespect and contempt of the current regime when they bother to show up and pretend they care about people or the Constitution just infuriates and sickens me. Especially  considering how often our government has lied and obfuscated about the details of this and other significant events. And I'll stop there.

Like every other American who was alive on 9/11 or on other hugely significant dates in our history, I remember exactly where I was and how I felt when the towers were hit and as we all watched it all happen on our television screens. My boys were young, and my daughter was just an infant; and our homeschool was cancelled for the day. I didn't know what the coming days would hold, or if perhaps the end times were truly upon us. But what impressed me the most was the passionate patriotism that unfolded on 9/12, and the courage and unity of the people. Like the popular meme states, I would never ever wish for another 9/11 type event, but boy I sure miss the way the country pulled together on 9/12 and following.

2. September 13th is National Peanut Day . . . do you like peanuts? Your favorite dish that contains peanuts?

I do like peanuts, especially honey roasted peanuts. My favorite peanutty thing is peanut butter and everything made with peanut butter. Like peanut butter cookies or peanut butter pie. But I'll just eat peanut butter straight out the jar, honestly.

3. Something you're currently 'nuts' abut?

Well, of course I'm thinking about food things now! So I'm currently nuts about almond milk, which is something I never thought I'd say, because it's NOT MILK. But I've started suspecting that dairy is not a friend to my digestive system any more, and found that I can drink almond milk without suffering consequences, and the chocolate and vanilla flavored ones are really good.

4. Your favorite Peanuts character? There are several quizzes online if you're curious . . . Here's a link to one on Buzzfeed.

I think Linus is my favorite, mature beyond his years in so many ways, yet he still loves his blanket. I also really like Peppermint Patty and she makes me laugh. Years and years ago, someone (probably my husband) observed that I had a haircut similar to Patty's and for some reason it stuck as a nickname. I even used Patty as my avatar online for awhile. I'm not really a tomboy like Patty, so I'm not sure how much I'm like her. I think I'm probably most like Lucy, but I would never pull that football trick on Charlie Brown the way she does! That always makes me mad that she does that, and even breaks her promise. I did a couple of the "which character are you like" quizzes and got different answers. One said I was like Linus and another said I was like Charlie Brown. Good grief!

5. Tell us about a job you worked 'for peanuts'?

In terms of dollar amounts, my tutoring gigs are 'for peanuts'! The other job where I worked for peanuts that comes to mind is a place I worked for a summer after my first year at college. For the most part I enjoyed my job, which was in the accounting office, and I liked most of the people I worked with. However, my supervisor was a little nutty and not in a good way, and wanted me to make accounts receivable calls basically shaking down customers were were barely fifteen days past due and I thought that was abhorrent and ethically questionable. And hardly fair to ask such a junior employee to do it! I procrastinated about it hoping she'd change her mind and finally went to the general manager with my concern and that was the end of that task assignment, to my huge relief, but I also was pretty sure that the supervisor really hated me because I went over her. I think in today's world, that would count as retaliation. I started looking for another job immediately.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My husband and I started eating a more Keto-friendly diet this week. I have some mixed feelings about it, because I love my carb-loaded breads and cereals and miss them; and also because I'm a picky eater when it comes to vegetables. That said, I've found a couple of successes so far, like a chili made with shredded zucchini instead of beans, a very good chicken dish, and pork chops breaded with crushed pork rinds and parmesan instead of breadcrumbs. Hopefully I'll record enough pounds lost to make giving up my carbs!

Do you have any nutty thoughts to share? Leave a comment and let me know!

    1. Peanut butter is good with almost anything and great on its own merits! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. I struggle to talk about anything in the realm of 'politics' these days as it's all so infuriating. I agree with the disrespect. I won't travel down the rabbit hole here. Good luck with your new Keto diet. I know french fries and bread in general are obstacles to my losing weight and try to avoid them. Sometimes I miss. I never make french fries at home and can usually resist ordering them out. Hubs always orders fries so I know I can steal one or two and that's enough. A bowl of warm rolls with butter is harder to say no to.

    1. Same here when it comes to the carbs - relatively easy to give up potatoes, and so very hard to give up bread! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. Oh yes, I have yet to find anything made with peanut butter that I don't like! Good luck on the keto diet; I too try to limit my carbs and it can be so hard to do.

  7. I remember Sept 12 just as clearly as Sept 11. I had to go into the city for school and it was just so quiet. I also need to limit carbs, I am struggling with weight gain!

    1. I remember realizing that as quiet as I THOUGHT our area was, there was actually a lot of air traffic high above us. It was noticeably quieter even out in the country. Crazy. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  8. I love all the Peanut characters! They are all unique as people are. I hate politics! I love peanut butter! I drink lactose free milk. I just can't get used to almond milk and it doesn't have the protein I need. I need to cut back on bad carbs too. Thanks for visiting my blog!

  9. I remember 9/11 well enough that I don't need to watch any of the shows (which I think are just money grabs anyway). My husband was on a plane going to Newark and saw the first tower on fire. Needless to say, I was panic-stricken as I couldn't get hold of him for hours.

I love all things peanut butter especially if they're covered in chocolate, too.

Good luck on the Keto thing. I have so much weight to lose (after successfully losing 60 pounds in 2012 and slowly regaining most of it). My youngest son has lost over 60 pounds since March by cutting the carbs, intermittent fasting and lots and lots of exercise.

    1. I can't imagine how terrifying it would have been to have someone who was flying or working in one of the buildings under attack that day. Turns out I'm not doing well following Keto this weekend, as we had to go out of town unexpectedly and we decided to just eat what was offered to us and available and not worry much about the diet. Oh well. Back on the Keto wagon on Monday! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  10. Amen. AMEN.

My most successful weight loss plan is Weight Watchers but I am struggling now to care enough to track!! Terrible. I am exercising well but just can't seem to track. Need to get serious again as I feel miserable.
I love peanuts and peanut butter and often times have a spoonful of peanut butter for lunch instead of a pb sandwich.
Love the Van Gogh painting with Snoopy. And Cookie Monster.

    1. Isn't that Van Gogh/Snoopy mash-up great? I'm so glad I found it to share.

I never did very well with Weight Watchers or anything that relied on calorie counting either. Limiting carbs is key for me, but it's so hard to do! Yes, a spoonful of peanut butter would probably do as a lunch for me as well!
