Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thoughts on Cats and Other Comforts

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. August 8th is National Cat Day. Do you own a cat? Are you a 'cat person'? Your favorite 'famous' cat?

Well, it's complicated. Because we do have two cats, but they live at the house in Maryland. And there's some question as to who owns which cat, or if the cats own us somehow. We got two kittens years ago, and named them Aurora and Merida. Aurora is Kennady's cat, but also is very attached to my husband. Merida is my favorite and is more likely to settle down with me than Aurora is. We thought about bringing Merida to Ohio with us, but weren't sure she would manage the upheaval well, and couldn't really predict how the cats would do if they were separated. I guess I've become a cat person, because I miss our cats a lot, and keep hoping that we'll decide to get a cat to live with us here at some point.

I think my current favorite 'famous' cat is Hello Kitty. My daughter likes the Hello Kitty world of characters so I've become pretty familiar with Kitty's face and she is ever so cute.

2. Cat nap - copycat - scaredy cat - curiosity killed the cat - cat got your tongue - like herding cats . . . which cat phrase applies to your life in some way currently? Explain.

I sure do love my cat naps! I'm always trying to catch up on sleep. The other one that is more relevant to me lately is "cat got your tongue". I've been uncharacteristically tongue-tied at church and in almost every social situation since moving to Ohio. I'm not sure why, but I suppose it's just a side effect of the general anxiety or depression.

3. What's your favorite or most-often-made one pot meal?

One of my personal favorites would qualify as a one-pot meal, I think, because it all gets thrown into one casserole dish in the oven. I'm having a hard time thinking of something that I make often or would be a favorite that truly uses ONLY one pot or pan. Anyway, the one I'm thinking of is a casserole that is basically ground beef, noodles, and corn in a 'sauce' of tomato soup and cream cheese. Topped with shredded cheese, of course. It's hearty and mellow and cheesy. Definitely a comfort food.

4. What do you wish you'd placed in a time capsule fifteen years ago?

Maybe more family photos. Let's see, that would have been 2008, and we did a lot of fun stuff that year - my oldest son and I went on a mission trip to Honduras, and we did a big family vacation to Florida. There must have been some mementos we should have kept instead of or in addition to the ones we did.

St Augustine, FL

Lake Yojoa, Honduras

The following photos are from Pulhapanzak Waterfalls in Honduras, where we rode the ziplines over the falls! Amazing experience, and other than photos, how would you save that in a time capsule?

5. Your favorite hour of the day? Tell us why.

I have trouble choosing a favorite anything. I suppose my favorite hour of the day might be first thing in the morning, when I can relax with a cup of coffee. That's the time I read the Bible, plan my day, spend some time at the computer. I wish I had a nicer view out the window though. My window view used to be out onto the front porch and the bird feeders.

This photo was taken in the evening instead
of morning, but you get the idea.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We're getting ready to head for Maryland for a visit with the family and a celebration of Aubrey's first birthday! They just had a couple days without electricity after a storm system took out trees and a lot of power lines in the county. Thankfully their power was restored yesterday or it would have been a very interesting weekend and birthday party situation!

Oh, and we get to see our kitties again too!

How about you - are you a 'cat person'? Leave a comment and let me know!

  6. That zipline over the falls is amazing!! I have never been ziplining but there are some places in the nearby mountains here so maybe when our grands are a little older we'll try it.

  9. I am definitely a cat person but am happy to have no pets right now; it makes it much easier to just pick up and go. Those throwback photos are fabulous! My boys and husband ziplined over Niagara falls and I thought they were crazy but happily snapped photos of them.

    1. Good point - if we had a cat right now, we'd have to plan our vacations a little differently. Over Niagara!! Wow!!! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  10. Really enjoyed this post. I have had lots of kitties but always considered myself more a dog gal. Your kitties are adorable. I have ziplined once. Had 18 stations and at number 9 I had a mini-panic attack. Cannot imagine going over the falls via zipline. Exhilerating, I am sure.
